Sorry guys, this may make me seem dim to some of you, but...
WTF is "..." ?
Is it a word in a foreign launguage that I don't know?
Does it mean, possibly, that someone is saying "dot dot dot"?
Does it piss anyone else on the server off when they see a PC saying "..."?

I mean really guys, if you can't simply... *looks surprised* and must type "..." Instead, then why are you here? This is, after all, an RP server. RP means using real words. Yes I know this may come off as slightly violent, or as a flame. Guess what, thats the point. "..." Is stupid, stop doing it. Use real words, if you have a small vocabulary, send me a pm, and I will mail you a thesarus.

It represents being speechless... E.g

Someone says something shocking to someone else, then the other person types "...", because they are speechless and/or shocked.

Like:

Random person "I just humped a Chicken for fun!" *Nods with a serious look*

Random perso nwho heard "..." *Looks shocked aswell as disgusted*

*Stands there, looking dumbfounded at just how much of an idiot you are*

Or,

*...*

I know what i'd rather type out. Especially for those people that can't type as fast as myself and others that have actually learnt how to type.

Thats my point though. It is shear laziness to type "...".
Just take the extra 40 seconds to type out on of the above descriptions.

With the rate that i type, and that some others type, 40 seconds to type out the sentence and the RP's already shifted its focus so much that it becomes and irelevant sentence. I know I'll continue to use ... wherever I deem it appropriate.

And it's also just a game, if people want to be lazy, there's no one to tell them they can't and have it reinforced, it's not a job where they are told they have to not be lazy and so on or they will be fired/removed Etc.

Maybe it's just the person isn't creative enough, or just can't think of something to type at the moment. Speaking from experience, since im not the most creative person you may or may not meet, it is also their choice to be lazy if they choose to, i'd say just get on with it.

Im sure there are many things that people do which annoy others, though they don't say nothing about it because they realise, all they have to do is either go somewhere else IC, avoid RP'ing with said person/people or get on with it and just accept not everyone is going to RP to the standards you might want them to.

It's exactly the same deal as with thought bubbles, IMO. Theoretically it's fine, but most of the time it's abused to insult and/or belittle people without having to confront them. The way I see it used most often is basically to say "You're really stupid, but I can't be arsed to say it." And usually it has a half-OOC reek to it.

It's fine when two people engage in dialogue and one is dumbstruck by what the other says, for example. But when two people are RPing together, and a third one is standing by the temple sign or Ultrinnan dye shop going "..." whenever one of the two says or does something the third player deems silly or not worth their time, it's not cool.

You could use either '*Looks utterly shocked and disgusted at the notion*' or '...'. When I see '...', it more makes me think of a comical blank look of surprise. It really all depends on the situation, if it were something serious, the former works best. If it's something ridiculous, the latter.

I guess the unclarity of its meaning also makes it a bad choice, perhaps moreso than thought bubbles. To me, it seems a disdainful, arrogant or sarcastic kind of silence. It's used in a variety of situations to mean many different things, and there's no way to tell what exactly a specific player means with it in a specific situation. I mean, how am I going to respond to "..." In Character? Can I go grab the guy by the throat and ask what their problem is, giving all those insulting glances? Or should it be treated as complete silence and lack of action? Am I basically metagaming, if I choose to react to it somehow?

That's why I think it should only be used in a context where its meaning is clear, and it's not the only thing you're contributing.

I use the ". . . " often. It's usually a placeholder of sorts but it all depends on the situation. Usually after the ". . ." I try and type something else an emote or sentence to help clarify it. But sometimes ". . . " is all there's time for in a quick paced conversation or someplace busy. I do it so that people can usually tell just What I'm responding to with the emote/sentence/whatever even if it's a few sentences later.

Or depending on how tired I am, it's cause I'm lazy. <.<

I don't use it very often. When I do, I try to remember to emote along with it. Something like:

..... ::is speechless at hearing that::

Or something. Which I guess makes it a bit redundant and I should just emote and not do the dot dot dot dot dot dot dot thing. ::shrug::

i occasionally use it to represent a short pause in conversation, sometimes between things i say.

For example:

My suit is black not!
vs
My suit is black... not!

for a long pause ill probably include a *remains silent* or *waits for so and so to continue*

But i find nothing wrong with ..., and i really dont see how it can be used to oocly attack someone like a thought bubble can... (<represents a voice trailing off)

so in all actuality, the ... is very versatile, if used correctly.

When you're with a group that's having a conversation you can't connect with, imo "..." is a nice effective way of reminding them that you're there, you can't ride with their RP or whatever, and you're not AFK. There's better alternatives but it's a nice default.

I would rather someone type something (anything) to indicate that their character is speechless, than leave me wondering if they have simply wandered away from their keyboard.

If I put in the effort of making the other character speechless, then can't they at least make a decent emote of being put in that state?

It all comes down to personal preference. Some people answer "I just picked my nose and wiped it on your cloak" with "..." and some prefer to use: *just...stares...* In the second example, it's clear that an ellipsis (...) suggests hesitation or even a thought trailing off, whether verbal or not.

For example:
"I didn't want to..."

I am a grammar freak who writes books, and I don't think there's any problem with it. That must amount to something!

Maybe?

That would be an ellipsis (the plural is ellipses). It is usually used to represent a pause where a person looks they are on the edge of speech in the scenario that you're talking about - you say something, they open their mouths to speak and then can't think of anything to say.

It also serves as a place-holder to show that while your character is dumbstruck, there is more coming.

Furthermore, it is useful at the end of a paragraph ...
... to show that more is coming.

So no, it is not a word in a foreign language, it is a grammatical construct in English that you apparently don't appreciate.
And I doubt they would say 'dot dot dot' even if they were saying the word:
What you see: '...'
What you might hear in your 'hypothetical' situation: 'Ellipsis'

Just like when you say the word: 'colour', you don't hear the character spell out the word 'see-oh-ell-oh-you-are', so why would you 'spell' out the ellipsis?

Guess what: if you're going to come up with a rant and call something stupid, you should spend more time in logical, cohesive arguments rather than denigration, especially when you admit that you are deliberately flaming.

Really, if the use of ellipses is the worst thing you can think of, it being so horrendously bad as to need a rant thread...again...

Well, I say it can only be a good thing. Congratulations Amians, everyone is so amazingly good, that the worst thing out there now is ellipses typed in RP.

Next on "As the World Rants", fashion, and the use of pure white and pure black.

"..." is traditionally used as a stand in for having to type out "Wow, I just witnessed something so messed up I don't know what to say." while allowing the player to show others that they are still present and honestly have no clue what you are on about or where they can find drugs as good as yours.

Example: Your character just rode into town side saddle on a dire badger while smoking weed and giving Nof the finger. Average reaction?

I quite agree. It has suitable uses, but people use it way too much.

I hate it when people do this:

Player B: ...

Player A: [continues the story]

Player B: ............

And so on.
