Been brewing on an idea of mine for some time now; to make a blind Ranger somewhat inpired by the Drizzt novels (Not Drizzt himself you dirty fanboys, ew) portraying Montolio.

So what I wish discussed is just how one would go about to make a believable character out of someone who is blind. By taking the Blind Fight feat, the whole penalty to combat is nullified if I understood the feat correctly, but as for interaction with PC's, enviroment, trade etc, I would appriciate some input. Obviously with high listen skill and years of training others enses he could orient himself quite well, but he should have some serious drawbacks in my oppinion, but I cant really figure out which to focus on.

And yes, i want this to be a character with a set of believable flaws, without crippeling him completely.

There's a few existing topics on this, where the concept has been mulled over thoroughly. The search gives me an error right now, so I can't give you the links, though.

Request a Widget that gives him the permanent Blind effect. That could help, although I'm not sure if that also blocks what you can read in the chat channels, effectively making him deaf too.

Also, I barely ever see a blind person running if they arent being lead by someone they are confident in, so you'd probably be wanting to walk. Everywhere.

My inspiration for Blind characters such as yours come from an elf in Warhammer, who's name escapes me right now, and how he fights by listening to the clink of someone elses armour, etc.

Yeah, this has been mulled over quite a bit.In all honesty, though, I would have to say that the likelihood of a blind character being able to fight well is approximately zero.
They make excellent assassins, since no one suspects them, and IRL most weapons are a oneshot.
An example of one problem is that there is no way for them to hear the difference between a shield coming down or a sword coming down - react the wrong way and you are dead.

I could, but I've said about the same things in every blind character topic...

Permanent blind-effect is not a good thing, btw. It makes RPing impossible, because it blocks everything the player should see, too. You want the character to be blind, not the player.

I disagree about blind characters being unable to fight, too. This is a world of heroes and extraordinary skills and powers, not entirely comparable to real life.

Without echolocation or ESP it is impossible. In a world with these things, then yes it is possible.

I was not talking about mechanical disadvantages, that would be too much hassle and too frustrating for me to play. Im playing this char for fun, not realism.

Having him fight well could be justified by the blindfight feat as far as I see it, that is why it does exist, no? Further, being a ranger with high listen and trained senses in general, i woudl think he could survive quite well in most enviroment. The quirk i been thinking most on his to rely heavily on the animal companion to be his "eyes", via the bonding between those two. Ofcourse, this is no replacement for normal eyesight, but would help him track enemies and such, I would imagine. The only mechanical limitation i can see bing both sensibel and not overly frustrating would be to never run, unless he knew the area extremely well.

He would mostly be at an disadvatage when interacting with PC'. That is the area of RP im not entirely sure how to pull things off.

104 listen (as in a check resulting in this) is about good enough to hear someone's heartbeat at 120 cm (I think it was jameslocke I sent the mathematics to as a request for my drow).
To put it another way, a character with 100 listen can hear ad understand, on average a whisper 850 feet away.

Where you are unable to speak with one exception that you have a telepathic link to another character who speaks for you due to a lack of a universal sign language. You send tells to the person who speaks for you.

Who says a blind person can not fight, I would bet a 100 percent chance...if a shaolin monk was blind, I bet you he could still put up an incredible fight against the best of the martial arts would right now. As for a blind character only class I could see would be a monk for these reasons. A ranger... I am pretty sure of might be hard to tell if he is for example between a mother bear and her cubs etc... I just dont see it. Where as a monk is pure disapline.

Get a blind monk against a guy with a crossbow, or a well trained man in full plate with large shield, locked gauntlets and a sword.

Being blind is an ~incredible~ disadvantage. Blind people tended to die very quickly on the field of battle.

People tend to die when they've been hit a few thousand times by swords, and potions don't tend to instantly heal wounds either.

Daredevil, anyone? Has his advantages in a fight, but disadvantages in other situations.

I actually play my character a bit like that. Funny thing is, I didn't have a clue of any Daredevils when I created her...

Go for mute or deaf if you really want to play a handicap. But if you play mute, actually try to describe what you are motioning with your hands and facial expression. I've done that on another server and it was quite funny. But don't do that *writes: blahblah* or *hands him note: blah blah*. Thats very lame.

Daredevil? Daredevil got all of his senses buffed, not only Epic skill focus (Listen) and a permanent Amplify spell.

Gah! Shaolin Monks are regarded as tough as nails due to their conditioning. A DwD/Monk with Epic Damage Reduction would equate well to a Shaolin Monk. Their fighting style is actually not that great when compared to some of the other stuff available in the martial arts world.

Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Karate-Kai for example would make you a far better bash-machine then Shaolin.

BLIND RANGER: If you make a blind ranger you have to re-skinn the companion as a Labrador. And carry a quarterstaff everywhere. There is a really cool Japanese movie about an old blind samurai who sounds like what you're after... anyone remember the name?

Someone who is blind should also have the Blind Sight feat(later changed to Blindsense) which ignores conceal, hide, and invisibility

Yup Zatoichi. However there are two versions of it. The newer being a dude with dyed hair that fights as if he came out of a matrix film. Pretty film to watch, but not one to take as historically correct.

Then there is the older film (that I preferred while my mates found it lame)
where Zatoichi is a chubby bald man. In this one the blindfight is very realistic. He swings about everywhere with his staff (or sword, it's bern a while since I saw them) sometimes looking very awkward. He stumbles about, drops to the ground, gets kicked and then sweeps his oppenent to the ground as well.

Good performance that might actually work in real life (it still is a movie though...) I think you should watch it QPR if you happen to get your hands on it, it might give you some nice ideas.

Thats why I suggested a mute with a telepathic link with another character, if you find somebody else willing to RP your voice.

A mute character works very well even without telepathy, I've seen one played before and she communicated by "playing" charades.

I didn't think telepathy like that was allowed, for the simple reason you could just call for help in a fight i.e. send a tell to your mates.

first of all, have any of you read drizzt novels? The ranger who was master of drizzt was blind, and he used his owl to locate his enemies and shoot them with his arrows. The owl would go on top of the enemy and make noise.

second of all, don't rangers and druids get some sort of supernatural link (be it empathic or telepathic) to their animal companions? The animal wouldn't have to be stereotypical guide dog anyway. with training, it could be any animal the ranger have had friendship with.

I have done like that, but only after everything else fails. And sometimes I don't even know the correct english words for making certain things. It makes things easier sometimes, but less funny, that I can agree on.

Have you ever noticed how different those books are from physical reality? While you could use a high listen to pinpoint your enemies (again, using my drow as an example, she can hear a heartbeat at 1.5m, and can no doubt pinpoint someone from more than twenty metres), you couldn't really use it to fight them. A prime example is the difference between a shield and a sword coming towards you. Or how tall is your enemy? Where are the vulnerable parts in his armour?

TeroSNS wrote:

The PHB says that a "druid's companion is completely typical for its kind except as noted in the sidebar on page 36."
It doesn't mention any empathic link on said sidebar, or anywhere else in the book, and since such a link is not "typical for its kind", I'm inclined to believe they don't have such a link, although they do have a 'link': a druid can handle her companion as a free action or push it as a movement action, even if she doesn't have any ranks in Handle Animal.

Edit:
I am not discouraging you from making your character, but you did ask for believability and I am giving my opinion in that regard - a blind character being able to fight as well as a normal one is, by no stretch of the imagination, believable.
Note - blind here means unable to detect your opponents position and actions to a reasonable degree of accuracy. Having magically augmented vision, echolocation etcetera does not count as being blind for the sake of this argument.

Well, it's fantasy. Daredevil can fight with his ears, too. It may not be realistic, but I wouldn't think it's out of the question either.

have you ever noticed that those books are part of Forgotten realms and so is Amia, and people tend to have superhuman abilities in both? Real life physics generally apply, but when you are talking about a character with 10 levels or more...

and its called "Fantasy" meaning, not real!

Yes, but again, you asked for believability. Believability means making it easy to swallow suspension of disbelief. In Faerun, I drop a rock, the rock falls down. No matter how many times I repeat the process, the rock will always fall down. I can build buildings using the concept - and I rely on these physical laws to remain accurate.

Furthermore, we also accept that a blind character cannot see. Tell me - what mechanism are you using to detect exactly what the other person is doing. If echolocation, you need a listen of about 150 to be anywhere near accurate, and you don't fall under 'blind' for arguments. If magic lets you know (in the rock example, the rock falling up would be magic - you expect it to fall down unless something strange is happening), again you are not 'blind'.

Blind people in the underdark would more likely be toyed with, tormented and all that nasty fun stuff, but left alive to help those poor sods that are drow feel better and more superior than something and actualy feel genuin about it.. comon they know deep down inside Surfacers are just better.

This kind of stuff always reeked of BS to me. If you are concentrating and picking that kind of sound up, if someone just speaks to you and is like 2 feet away, it would blow out your ears!

It was using mathematics based on the DCs requires in the PHB. And why would you go deaf? My ohmeter can detect very low and very high resistances, to use an analogy. Or, to use an argument that is oft being used against me - it's magic.
We have empirical evidence that the characters can do this (the listen check+ the rule book), and they are not deaf, so obviously it doesn't cause deafness, which can be tested IRL - how many people do you know that have good hearing are also deaf?

Your omh meter...Dude, that is a machine.

Also, most multimeter also have different levels you choose. You pick the one ohm level and it detects with higher accuracy values of <1 ohm. Anything higher causes an error.

Your analogy was kind of straight up bad.

It is just logic getting in the way saying that if you are picking up the pebble across the street falling on top of a hay stack, the merchant two stalls over will be blowing out your ears when he cries out. I don't mind thought since once can argue a character can learn to drown out other sounds. Magic and DnD characters and all that.

The ability to hear quieter sounds does not make everyday noises louder. See: The Mosquito Ringtone.

Okay, another example. I can shout for my dog, whether he's next to me or across the house. This does not damage your hearing. Being able to hear quieter sounds, as Tormak states does not make others louder - to do more damage, you need more W/m^2.

There was a blind fellow worked in the kitchen at a restaurant I worked in. He got along just fine all day long prepared all his food took everything from the kitchen to the dish room without an ounce of help. Even cleaned his area spotlessly when finished. If the OP'er wants to play someone blind who has developed his sense of survival over years of being blind in a world of epic abilities I find the prospect to be completely believable. Think of the number of people who drop balls of darkness on themselves just to get the upperhand against someone who is accustomed to using their eyes. They are good at this and are only trained at it. now Imagine someone who isnt just trained but lives his every waking moment without the use of eyes. I think he would have an advantage over those who are sighted. Doesnt the master always tell the student "Do no trust your eyes, they can decieve you." Anywho that's both of my two cents worth.

Now try to imagine that fight in broad daylight.
Since the request was for believability, I will post this question - if it can be answered satisfactorily, I will drop all grievances:

Without being able to 'see' through any means (including magic or echolocation) what is the mechanism through which he is detecting his opponents exacts movements?

Note, I will not accept listening short of echolocation for that one since it simply does not give enough information.

The blind bad mo'fo characters like Zaitochi and so on are plausible because they are utter super monster tough supermen in a world of normal guys, so even a big handicap like blindness can't lose their lead.

Against other super monster tough supermen, it's a little...hurk. That said, I'd likely do with QPR's proposed chap as I do for every character regardless of gimmick: hang out with them if they're fun to hang out with, make excuses and leave if not.

I like the idea of a blind character but Im also thinking whoever posted that the sound of a sword and a shield would be the same. And If you are suddenly start running through town knowing your way I hope the DMs smite you on the spot.

Idk about how amazing your rp is, but you the person will see teh game, hence you cant rp blindness charactly me thinks.
No offence to you, try going without your sight for just a few hours, its really hard. I was in a social experiment once and one by one they took away our ability to see, talk, smell, taste, touch, and hear. It was very hard.
If you do get play the character Id be happy to play with him and see how he acts though.
