This might be a vent or a rant, but whatever. This isn't aimed at 'The staff'. It'll probably be a nasty topic, but.. I need to get it off my scales.
We have new players, every day. They're new here, they may or may not be new to NwN, or even D&D but they are people too. They may not understand the social structure, it takes time to accommodate to it for anyone new to one. Some might be better at lurking and reading and acclimating themselves before trying to make a foray, but some might just be anxious and try to include themselves in conversations to try to get use to it that way. I ask that you try to leave behind the years of rancor that you've developed here on the Forum/Game login screen.
It might be Just because you've been here for years, doesn't mean that they understand something has been discussed to death. Nor does that mean you should treat them like dirt when they bring it up. The forums have been pruned, and 'Oh you just need to go read every post on the forums' is a bit absurd, there's too much to read for that beyond the things that are stickied. Remember, new players keep the server infused with vital new energy, keeps it alive, and awesome. Invest some of that passion you obviously are trying to exert into helping them.
I've seen/rped with new players in the past weeks. At least three of those new players that are bringing life to the server and trying to make their mark, and have impressed me immensely, this is what I really like to see; constructiveness, not destructiveness.
I'd really hate to see them run off because someone has their panties in a permanent twist with OOC behavior in game or the way some topics have been going recently.
Be constructive, conducive not destructive, and dividing. Help them, give them a slap with the DC recommend wand, or send them a tell saying Hey, good job, or hey, I like what you're doing. Validation, and acceptance in this way, is -huge-. It makes them feel like they have at least made a connection here, and its those connections that'll bind them in, and keep them coming back, and foster the community.
If a topic rankles you, instead of going in like a dusted up wild boar you should just elect to skip it, or exercise some maturity or self control in your responses, there's been some real (censored)-up exchanges on some of the topics in the past weeks. I for one think its petty, gives the server a bad image, and sets the status quo in the wrong direction. They see this, and think it's okay to do the same. Lead by example.
I'd suggest not lambasting them or even other players that have been here for awhile with a full broadside, people might just not understand, or not be looking at it from all sides. This type of behavior has the potential to drive off people, or infest them with that same type of attitude. Its important to keep some 'youth' in the server, and also important to treat each other civilly.
I know there are longstanding feuds, dislike between people et cetera.. and there always will be no matter when or where.... but please try to take it to PMs or IMs and try to clear the air without being pissy or self righteous.
One doesn't take a dump in their own living room, why do it in the community hall? So why do it in party chat, the person you may be dissing might just be a friend of someone in the party you're in, and begin to think you in fact are a tool. Or here on the forums?
Just Think about what you do and what it does.

Anyways, now that the sillyness has been done.
If you are annoyed at something sleep over it one or two days and if you still deem it worthy to get your panties in a hunch try to write at least politely.
Or just don't post at all, see into the topic later, and perhaps you are pleasently surprised. I was when I looked at the feats and skills topic, first I thought: meh, will never work, why do it, will be useless.
Two days later after reading it: Hmm, quite good ideas actually, might be worth it.

Actually the first time I logged in the nwn server to play it multiplayer I logged in Amia. I had no clue about figs, about having a website, about anything at all. I just liked the game and I though wooo, it will be like in a theater.
But, then I asked things oocly and this player came to me and said, dont say it. I was like what??
you are ooc. What in hell is ooc? The player turns to me and say, you know dude, this is not your place you should leave and left me over there with loads of question mark and quite angry. I logged and tried another server, a server about dragonlance. They explained me the mechanics of the game and their website and such. Then, I came back to Amia. I got to meet people that were nice and taught me about stuff in Amia. But, I didnt check the forums, because I didnt think it was important. Until, it was clear that I was missing out in loads of things. Everything was about the forums. Then, six months later I decided to request my account.
But, that one dude that even said the name of the character I chose were not a good name and that it sucked balls, almost made me never more log back again. I am glad I insisted.

I agree that new players are the blood of this server and scaring them away is a bad idea.

When I first went on the forum, I felt way too apart from anything. I lurked for months before doing anything. I think my first post was IC. Anyway, What really put me off doing anything was the amount of written abuse some people got as a reply to a simple query. What made it worse is it was predominantly DMs.
I had a fear that if I had something to voice, I'd be ridiculed promptly. And, yea, I was after a while. (I'm talking years ago)
It made me feel terrible and made me hate playing the game, even though the forum seems completely seperate.
Nowadays, I just say what's on my mind, and pretty much expect to be dissed by DMs (Well, specific ones anyway). But that does NOT mean it's acceptable in any way.
Tact goes a long long way. Some DMs have it, some don't.

I'd like to add something to these good points that I've repeated over and over:
This is a game. It's here for you to have fun, play around with your friends and make new ones, and take your mind off the woes of everyday life for a little while. There's no need to get riled up over simple issues. It's not that critical. Take a breath, relax, remind yourself to just have fun.

I remember my first time logging on to Amia... I had done the Arena Servers for awhile and got tired of them and decided to give an PW server a shot. I wandered around like an idiot for a few hours and then stood in the center of Ultrinnan for about an hour. I was about to give up on Amia when Redfren stepped up and started talking to me. He could tell that I was a n00b and offered to help out. I remember countless hours of his helping teach me about drow on Amia and all the fun stuff that goes with them.
I've in turn tried to do the same to others when I notice they're new. It just seems to be the right thing to do.

Finding new players to me is sorta like walking in a candy store. Its a brand new uncorrupted person to amia. Yes sadly enough I feel amia is corrupted and this new person is pure. He does not know who pcs are dms, does not know any of the occ drama between different people, which even if we do not want to admit is there and affects our rp towards certain people. One thing I would love to see is if you are a new player that on the login screen there is a little widget you can pick up that adds in your profile for 20 rl hours within amia. This way dms and players can help this new person Occly. Explain a lot of the confusing rules and what not.
Of course these are only my views.

I agree with that whole post, Dwagin.
Delarwyn wrote: you are ooc. What in hell is ooc? Alot of people get this it would seem, Arelith was the first RP server I went on, I think I played there about five+ Months before Amia, and one or two treated me almost exactly how you explained, I used my real name they told me it was stupid and to remake with a 'proper' name, they were only a Player too, not even a DM. But one person was actually nice enough to explain to me all the terms and such. I even witnessed similar happening on Amia about four months ago, someone was saying OOC things in Cordor, because they were new to the Server, they were like most new people who haven't been on an RP server before, didn't even know what OOC meant and stuff, then one person went "// Dude, this is an RP Server, if you don't know how to RP then log off and go somewhere else, you're not welcome here". I was about to send the new player a tell explaining things, but he logged off before I sent. Cobbit wrote: I'd like to add something to these good points that I've repeated over and over:

I agree with this, I usually say similar to people who get annoyed, or even pissed off with PvP or something, some people take the game way more seriously than they need to.
The thing that I liked most on Amia, when i first logged in before I even said anything, a player asked me did I need any help/info, since they had never seen my login before, explained about the forums and subraces, that's probably one of the many reasons I stuck to Amia, though not everyone was so nice or willing to help.

I agree with the OP. There is unnecessary rudemess. In the game and in this Forum there can be a rather obvious clique mentality. I have also seen/experienced some with a "Holier than Thou" attitude. Frankly I feel that some of those with that "Holier than Thou" attitude are possibly just very insecure, sad and lonely people. When I have felt bad about myself, I usually project that on others.
These jerks are a very small minority. Most of the folks I have intereacted with are awesome.
The bottom line is that this is a game, it should be FUN. If you do have vast amounts of knowledge, cool share it. Share it in a kind manner. What you put out there always comes back to you. Take your time be kind and THINK how you would feel before you spew off negativity at others.
Have a great weekened all!

A great post from a great gal who helped me out when I first made Avadon last year. If we can all take this to heart and put aside our sometimes presumptuous attitudes, like Dwagin said, this server can become overall conducive as we play this GAME together. I know it is because of the amazing people that play this server that I am continuously allowed to take part in this immensely enjoyable and infinitely renewable and fresh experience every day.
So thanks to Dwagin and everyone else that plays this server! Hopefully I can be help to incoming players and give them a helping hand like I was given when I first started playing.

Tact goes a long long way. Some DMs have it, some don't. I hate your guts, Andy, and you know it! And don't forget about those DMs who have tact, but make a conscious choice not to use it because situational ethics deems that tact will hamper the desired outcome. Quote: "// Dude, this is an RP Server, if you don't know how to RP then log off and go somewhere else, you're not welcome here".
This is a pet peeve of mine. Dwagin did this once back when I was player (a long time ago, granted) and I wanted to tear her head off for it, but I held my tongue. I was just a player, what right did I have to say anything to anybody else OOC? None whatsoever.
Now, if I see it DMside, I will usually send a tell that may or may not be worded nicely to say, "Play nicely with others." I'll admit one time I did put a player on such a guilt trip that I got them to apologize to the new player for being a jerk.

Oh gods, I can still be horrible, trust me. Yoss is right, and would have been within every right to blast me for what I had said. I kind of wish he would have. I'd like to think I've come a ways from where I was. I don't like how I was.
But, I try to look at things from the point of view that the vast majority of people are not trying to be tools, and understand that we all at one point or another screw up and do stupid crap, or don't understand something. Operating from that point of view, I've noted a vast increase in my patience, my fun, my ability to laugh at my mistakes.
If someone honestly tries to better themselves at RP, or is trying, no matter how difficult it is I will help them till I can't patience wise, but I won't snap at them. The key here is that they are -trying-. I sometimes find myself more passionate about those who are trying hard, compared to those who are great, because the former needs the attention and praise more.

I'm not fishing for praise here, I appreciate nice words, who doesn't, but that isn't the focus of this topic.
Its easy to sometimes not see what we do, I just want folks to look at themselves when they're interacting with others. I want our community here to be strong and fun for others. I enjoy it here, and I think the best way to continue to do that is focus that passion into constructive ways, not cyclical arguments on the forum, or letting it piss me off at other players, so I thought I'd share that with others.
And well.. *points at sig*

Recently, it seems like a lot of people have not been outright mean or argumentative, just snippy. I don't like posting a simple topic for discussion or whatever and get snide, unhelpful remarks in return that have little to nothing to do with what I originally said.. It's made me hate posting on the forums in any capacity, as you can see from my post count.
Now, I understand that a lot of this is just a part of internet culture, and it's pointless to whine about. My point, however:
Please don't post if you're just trying to show everyone how cool/hilarious you are. Have a little bit of respect for your fellow poster, even if you do think they're an idiot. You have a right to that opinion, but expressing it in a way that is not helpful and will obviously do nothing but make people angry... is stupid.
Even if you have a great point, coating it in a snide, snippy little remark is not going to make people listen to you and consider your advice. In fact, it will have the exact opposite effect.
Just be nice. It won't kill you, and it will make everyone, including yourself, much happier.

And Alanna, I think I like your post the best. Because, really, I'm okay with anyone being snippy and snide and ridiculous and I don't usually care.. you'd think there's a reason for it. An attempt to be funny, actually being funny, they know you and it's an inside-joke-funny-thing, etc.
But when people started just being obviously outrightly crazy on every post that ever happened in the world, I kinda started doing the same. I don't think people realized it was a joke, but.. I even made up pet names for everyone before I even knew them, because apparently to some on these forums you know someone if you stalk their post-count enough or something.. I think that's when I first came up with Stormak.
Anyway, it can be really annoying, I agree. Though I'm completely a culprit, because I've done it in (subtle?) retaliation many times now.
Edit: PS One thing I have to disagree about in this topic is Validation, at least personally. I dunno if it's as great as many think, because the reason I have sought and do keep seeking to find and create better RP, characters, and a more concrete world is because I didn't get much Validation. I never thought and don't really think that I'm very good. So I strive to be better and more appropriate. I think in lots of situations Validation can really stunt some people's growth.

I wasn't posting it because I thought he was or wasn't talking about me, I was posting it because, sincerely, if you have an issue with a DM, speak to the DM.

In spite of presenting such a point Tormak, there a lot of people who are uncertain if they will be able to fairly talk to a DM without offending them or creating some sort of undue trouble.
To a point I feel comfortable talking with DMs but I admit even at times I get awkward with doing so. It's a point of human irrationality I admit, but still it's there and it's hard to deal with.

It's the same thing as trying to speak to your boss. People generally want to avoid confrontation with those in positions of authority, no matter how irrational it may be.

Well, then I suggest, in the most blunt way possible, "Getting Over It" and talking to us.

Someone I know from another server had a problem with a DM, they wouldn't talk to that DM about it, nor any of the others, not even the head DM, beause they felt they would just be ignored and nothing would happen even though that DM was abusing their position and grieving the player from DM side, which wasn't fair.
They knew nothing would be done even if they did make a complaint because other people who had the same problem gave in screenies of it, they'd either be told to keep their mouthes shut, or be banned.
Eventually, he just left and joined another server as most of the people that went there did, the server quite quickly died down before no longer being hosted.

I doubt it would, the DM's here aren't remotely close to that, as far as I know atleast.

Cyclical arguments are the evil time loops of forums as we know them. Alongside necro'd topics, most likely to make someone say 'Oh fer crying out loud' or less polite variants to the screen.

When people are snide, snippy, rude or just downright mean on the forums or OOC'ly when IG, it always makes me think, "Would that person say that if the other person was standing in the room with them?"
It's often times easy to detach the human element when dealing with internet communication (whether through forum use of online gaming in this case). They've done research on the exact topic actually and it was found that the vast majority of people are much ruder and crueler when communicating over the internet than they are when dealing with people face to face. It's always easy to be a jerk when someone is hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away.
If you think you may be guilty of this and actually wish to change (*gasp!*), I would recommend picturing that person actually standing in front of you (and that they're like a 7' tall musclebound MMA fighter) and see if you'd still say it. If you would, then go for it... if it's something that a normal person would bash your face in for, then quickly raise your hands from the keyboard and reconsider your words.
Me for example, I'm a pretty much a complete ass in real life, but it's the sarcastic type that most people tend to love for some reason. Unfortunately, my sarcasm doesn't translate very well into typed word so I have to be real careful with what I type out and try to go the extra mile to ensure that I'm being kind and helpful and not an asshat.

I lost a job for breaking my boss' nose (along with assault charges, wee). Shouldn't be worried about speaking up against people with authority, otherwise things get pent up and either you let it out in one unpleasant way, or just keep making snide comments and jabs about said person, which will make you look like a prick in the process.

Food for thought there, I believe I will work on my 'play well with others' ethos in any case.
But one question; what do you do if you're born a bad tempered prick (I may or may not suffer from this condition) who says they don't suffer fools and equates 'fool' to 'doesn't agree with me'?
Gah, now that I've typed that a realize it may be true... Admitting you have a problem is the first step though. I'm off to find a quite corner for navel gazing.

Drink more (or less, depending on current intake).

I'd suggest everyone try to avoid sarcasm in debates and discussions. It only serves to denigrate your opposition, which tends to devolve into an argument.

My post actually wasn't complete sarcasm. I was being somewhat serious. Alcohol in reasonable and responsible doses is proven to lower inhibitions. Which in my mind makes it easier to accept other points of view. Yet, drinking too much can have adverse effects to this lovely little benefit of alcohol, making people rather asinine and stubborn.

Why?
That's not a snide query. However, stating that these things should be done rarely motivates the guilty, who constantly wrestle with the question: why bother?

It's easy to be rude and blunt, especially on internet forums where all that is conveying your meaning is the written word (typed if you want to be nitpicky). But one day you may look back (especially since the internet tends towards archiving a lot of redundant old posts) and regret that you wrote what you did when you did.
In bothering to keep your posts from offending or annoying where it was not necessary, you will have fewer regrets later on.
