I saw a similar post in here about Death by Dev Critting, so I figured it was the best place to put it. If it's not, feel free to move me wherever.
(Oh and maybe you should not read any farther if you don't like gross stuff? But the title should've told you that, probably...)
I'm curious to know how the majority of Amia plays any sorts of RPed-out dismemberment. I know in hunting/adventuring, I would play that I got back to the clerics fast enough... but recently my main and only character, Clide, was dismembered by a powerful evil dudette (I have no idea what she is class-wise) and then tossed around for hours by other powerful evil dudes and stitched up and ripped apart and stuff. He did not get to a cleric quickly at all and was probably more dismembered than a normal hunt/adventure would've provided.
I didn't see any guidelines on this sort of thing and another player In-Game told me that it's mostly a personal choice here on Amia. That Death isn't really a big deal either. So I could definitely have all my limbs back if I wanted.
I think it could give Clide some distinct flair for there to be remnants from this experience, but does that make my choices look weak as a player because I'm not having my character regenerate everything like is apparently "normal" on Amia? Would anyone else really care or just say things like, "Gee. Go see a cleric, dude."
I was wondering if it makes differences to roleplayers here if it's an RPed-out kind of thing or if they just do that because you probably would realistically get killed/dismembered a lot throughout hunting. Or even how they take any kind of dismemberment in general. (I know Clide has died [and probably lost limbs, too] many times out in the wilderness.) I'm not asking anyone to tell me how to do it (unless there are rules that I'm unaware of), I'm just curious. And yes, I know curiosity killed the cat.

well if you pay the DCs for a limb removed (no idea how many) remember not to equip anything in the off hand 0_o. I suppose you could look quite badass one handing a greatsword but idk...

I don't. My characters all go up and get themselves healed NINS (now if not sooner).
My characters would usually ask, upon seeing a cripple. "Why don't you go see a healer?" Which I believe is a perfectly legitimate question.

My main character lost his leg in a DM event. He still walks around with a peg leg after at least a year..
Most people, ICly, will usually ask how it happened rather than urging you to see a healer, in my experience. Unless your character is literally just a head and torso on stilts. Ultimately, if you want to RP your character losing something after a particularly nasty PvP or DM encounter, go for it. Decide it's not your bag, there's no real limit, I think, on when an affliction can be cured if you're not dead. It's completely up to you and no one else if you choose to lose a leg or do acrobatics the next day.
Most of Amia, though, gets healed up pretty quick and pretty completely.

To me I just find it odd why you would remain crippled when you could be healed completely for free without a good reason. But to each their own.

Agreed. Some people see it as a badge of honor. It's pride.
To the same degree, you have, for example, Lycans who are infected and choose to not get cured even though it's available to them. Not everyone see's things the way you do. Even in real life, some people would never give up their wheel chair for legs again. Some of them play sports and are very physically active even though they're in a wheelchair. There's nothing weird or wrong about it at all if you ask me.

I see a few characters actually that chose not to regenerate a limb, for like...battle sentiment, or something like that.

Also, many people dislike (and with good reason, imho) the concept that Magic Fixes Everything That Could Ever Possibly Happen To You.
Such as Clerical healing spells in RP.

Then it's your character's superstitious / moral objection to magic. Although, I prefer to avoid healing magic in RP as much as possible: if it can be healed mundanely it should be =P
That said, it is an individual, and what works for one may not work for another.

Whahahaha. Funny cleric concept:
Cleric: "You're wounded! Let me heal you"
Woudned: "No, let me bare the shame and heal myself"
Cleric: "Why you little!! *Crashtackles the poor-old-injured man and a nasty cracking sound can be heard*"
Wounded: "*Pain*"
Cleric: "*Proceeds to heal and fix the wounded until in perfect shape, then helps him to his feet, gives him a pat on the back*There we are mate! have a good one will ya! *Aussie accent. Proceeds to next wounded person*"
...wait, this seems familiar. *Taps chin and moves on pondering*

I will personally ignore Magic Fixes Everything if I want to be wounded. It's an unfortunate inbalance caused by the high magic and lots of PCs of Amia. It breaks the game.
Realistically, people aren't likely to see enough gold in their life to pay for powerful healing magics. It's even more unlikely to find a powerful enough a cleric with the time and willingness to help you. Few would do it just for business (like Waukeenites might), they'd want approval from their god and some hunch of you doing great things for the faith yet. For the majority of people, even adventurers, wounds are bad stuff. You don't grow limbs back with healing potions, you'd probably need Greater Restoration, which few clerics are able or willing to cast. Some druidic regenerative spells might work, too; I'm not an expert on spell details.
I'll live with healing spells patching up mortal wounds and even resurrecting from the dead, but my PCs still get scarred, branded by hot iron, and they might get their eye clawed out.

Galen's 3 step guide to mutilation:
1) Have consent from all involved
2) Try to keep out of public areas (show some curtesy and go to a quiet area on the server such as a locked room or Underport. There's minors afterall)
3) Make sure there's a Salandran online to put them back together again.

Not really, not all PC's consider themselves or are "adventurers" so it doesn't really cover PC's entirely. Not all PC's are epics either.

Not all Cs are poor, either, so poor they can't afford the couple of hundred gold to get to the free healing of the Salandrans.

All the responses are appreciated! I made my decision down the middle of the road. I didn't want my character's first experience with horrid consequences to leave him crippled, but I think that a world is nothing if the boundaries of life (aka consequences of life) are nothing. That is why I was curious about other people's RPed-out choices. Also to see their reactions to my choice with Clide. If I give Clide no worldly consequences, Clide will assume that there are no limits. He might as well go get his head cut off every day and reappear the next. If you get my meaning? And I wonder what keeps your characters from doing just that, Yurell? Why not just run in, get your head cut off while spying, and run back five minutes later to do it again?
It's different with hunting -- if he does get his head cut off, it's probably done in two seconds, and I can "RP" in two more seconds (I put it in quotes because I'm not really doing it) that he immediately ran back to the Temple and rested up for days. Especially when noone else is out hunting with you. But when the torture/dismemberment is actually RPed out, there is something to be had from RPing out the rest of it.. the consequences.
But yeah, thanks again! Hope to see some of you I haven't met In-Game.

I'm sorry, were you being sarcastic? I must have missed it when you forgot the obvious point that death hurts. Why would my characters go and get themselves killed?
1) Because it is painful
2) Because there is no guarantee they'll be returned to life - even a low chance is good to avoid
3) Because that bastard cleric nicks 40k gold
4) Because it wastes time
Quite apart from that, I'm advocating getting healed. Instead of sobbing around Cordor "Boohoo I've got no hands", my characters ('cept Amenia) will tell you to go see a healer. If you refuse, they will call you an idiot (or think it).
You see, I am trying to employ something called 'common sense' in my characters. Badge of pride is a good reason IMO, and I respect that. My characters, on the other hand, don't. My characters see a physical disability upon themselves, so they will want it rectified ASAP. At no point did I suggest sending one's character out just to suffer, so before you employ sarcasm remember that it only serves to denigrate your opposition.

"Magic Fixes Everything"
A play by The Cobbit.
JIMMY: "Boy, what a wonderful day in Cordor! I'm in perfect health, and it seems everyone else is too, all thanks to Magic!"
JANE: "I'll say! And thanks to Magic, nobody is ever hungry or poor, and we don't even have to worry about bad weather! Thanks, Magic!"
GEORGE: "Oh my, what a horrid trek through those Spires! I barely made it out with my life. I'm lucky I can walk at all, even with this debilitating limp. I'll likely be out of action for at least a few weeks."
JIMMY: "Not if I have anything to say about it! HEAL!"
GEORGE: "...Well, thanks, I guess... But that was a rough time. I'm pretty sure my ribs are still going to be bruised up for-"
JIMMY: "HEAL!"
GEORGE: "Then I think the fact my spine was ripped out of my back might be cause for some discomfort over the next-"
JIMMY: "HEAL!"
GEORGE: ".....Thanks, again. Though I can certainly understand if all that high magic casting has left you drained and unable to cure this ingrown toenail."
JANE: "HEAL!"
GEORGE: "Dammit! Let me have some kind of physical flaw or deformity! All this perfection is boring!"
JANE: "No can do, because-"
JIMMY & JANE: "Magic fixes everything!"
THE END

By all rights, most Clerics would be chastized for so freely wasting the divine magical energies of their deity, just for minor things.
And this is why I often have deities leave these subtle hints.

Which is why I only use magicwhen necessary. But if a bloke comes in dismembered, I'm fairly certain your deity (especially if it's a deity like Ilmater or Salandra) wouldn't mind you restoring the limb.

Would an Ilmater Cleric, remove his own limb to let the others person's heal? They are all about taking the pain so others can be free.

You know that you can Spellresist healing right?
Quote: Spell resistance is the extraordinary ability to avoid being affected by spells. (Some spells also grant spell resistance.) Now, in most cases, you don't spellresist healing because you make yourself a willing target and drop attempts to resist. Quote: A creature can voluntarily lower its spell resistance. Doing so is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. Once a creature lowers its resistance, it remains down until the creature’s next turn. At the beginning of the creature’s next turn, the creature’s spell resistance automatically returns unless the creature intentionally keeps it down (also a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity).
[ http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilit ... Resistance ]
So, RPly, you've ever chance to Spellresist healing. Or, if you wanted, to give no resist to being face-blasted with a fireball.
On Amia, if you're spell-resisting a buff or heal, we allow and roll and work with always making those saves. It's like a social roll [persuade, bluff] in not being requred, but flavor, and Healing is just one that is commonly accepted but fully resistable.
[[Total Edit: Think this was mentioned already]]

Yurell, my characters aren't epic. I daresay 99% of Amian PCs aren't epic. Epic is a relative term, insofar as it denotes signifigant greatness. You cannot be independently epic, you must be epic in relation to something else.
In a world where commoners can afford to pay a few hundred coins for a package they've already recieved a few hundred times that week, a world where orcs are a challenge for level 20 characters and there's an endless supply of nameless, insignifigant monsters that can trash a careless level 25, I'm sorry to say that your character is by no means "epic." If anything, he's mediocre, slightly above average.
Magic works alright in a PnP campaign, where there's little gold, interactive NPCs and only a handful of heroes. If the game was originally designed for a few hundred PCs to run about 24/7 hoarding gold and hitting the level cap in a matter of weeks, I am sure regenerative magics of such power wouldn't have been made so easily available. I think it's our responsibility to try to fix that imbalance, suspend a little of our disbelief and pretend magic doesn't fix anything. Because even if you might encounter the occasionally awkward situation every few months, it's much better than ruining all interesting storytelling possibilities simply because you got epic loot and a level 30 cleric buddy. It's a matter of taste, and I can't expect others to go along with the flavour I try to achieve in my RP. But I'm sure going to avoid a guy who comes flaunting his epic spellz and wants to monkey-stomp over RP with his magic.

OOC, I understand why you want your personal source of drama, so more likely I would just remove myself from the situation so I wouldn't have to choose between violating my own suspension of disbelief and ruining the mood of the scenario you are trying to create. Yurell wrote: That'd be a good IC reason. Although some of my characters will think you're an idiot An IC badge of pride would make sense. That's a reason my currently-existing characters are most likely to respect, and wouldn't make me roll my eyes OOC. Since it doesn't involve a character being constantly hacked to bits, drinking heal potions like water and using Raise Dead scrolls like toilet paper, then turning around and pretending that this particular wound can't be healed by the massive level of healing magic they so casually throw around. o0GuNz_N_RoSeZ0o wrote: Even in real life, some people would never give up their wheel chair for legs again.
Show me someone who actually had the ability to do this and turned it down, and I'll stop thinking it's bullcrap.

There is no proving it. It's the way some disabled people feel. Who are we to argue that? Some people find a new found confidence, a new found sense of empowerment with what they have left and take to sports when they never did when they had all their limbs. You can not believe it if you like, but I've seen it and have no reason to think they would lie about something like that. Maybe the words give them reassurance in themselves, sure, that might be it. Personally, I give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not saying they're lying. I'm saying that if it's just something they said, but never actually had the ability to choose (since as far as they know it's impossible), it's not something even they can know for sure.
Like people who say that if they had the ability to live 500 years they wouldn't take it. Maybe that's true, maybe it isn't, but you can't be sure that people would react in the same way to a hypothetical situation as they would if they really had the opportunity.

Well of course not, I'm just saying. I'm sure there are people who would take the chance at getting their limbs back but there would surely be some that would remain disabled. That's the point I was making. I wasn't trying to get all philosophical about it.

I have nothing against that. I just hope that everything is done ICly as your characters wish (within the rules, of course).

alright i have nothing better to do so heres my two cents... don't riot now..
i think RPing a few wounds if you want to is okay what i would more look down on are people thay say you "have" to RP them more than people who don't like to RP them i my self had my main char (which if you know me is one of two chars i made and ever RPed on Amia) walk around with two broken toes one broken rib and not to mention all the other stuff that must have gotten smashed one he got draged in to helping the Eternal Order in that event where their temple got blown up...
needless to say he was pretty beat up and if you knew the guy you would know why it would be hard to find a healer who would help him so that was my IC reason for that.. anyway as to geting stuff cut off like arms i don't do that unless its a PC i don't like very much as i like to keep my main alive now if you caught me with a PC i didn't like so much i wouldnt care very much about what you did to him.... anyway thats just my two cents remember what i said about rioting now....please.....

My opinion is:
If you have an IC reason, anyone who whines OOCly is being an arse.

I want a character like the pirate from Family Guy. 4 pegs, a torso and a head. He'd be an epic wizard with permant still spell . And would ride his pet into the battles.

Well if he's also mute, deaf, and deaf... he can get a pixie to do all the communication for him.
But being mute he'd also need silent spells?
