Does crossbreeding between species of dragons exist in FR? As in a blue and red dragon mating to form some hybrid. Would this result in some sort of "purple" dragon or is it like elven subraces where it's just one or the other?

I was under the distinct impression that Chromatics that don't mate with their own species are what yield white dragons. And we all know about white dragons.

No, they're their own separate chromatic species.
Brown dragons exist, yep. They're a Faerunian specific dragon in the desert. They're the only True Dragon without wings.
Purple Dragons... now I can't remember where I'm getting this from, but I think purple dragon ends up being a synonym for Shadow or Deep dragons. One or the other. "so black it looks purple" etc. Has that sort of sheen to it.

Nope. A Purple dragon is a Venerable(?) Black Dragon. A Black Dragon that is so very, very old that it's scales fade to purple. The Purple Dragon Knights of Cormyr take their name from Thauglor, a Black Dragon that once ruled the region near the Storm Horns.

Well my question is answered, I just wanted to know did it happen.
And as I remember, "purple" dragons are just really old Black dragons. As they age, their color fades and they begin to take on a purple tint. That's where the Purple Dragon Knights got their name in Cormyr, the dragon that used to claim the lands was an ancient Black dragon that looked purple.
When I used "purple" in my question, it was merely to represent the cross between red and blue, not the aforementioned black dragons.
Edit:
Dang, beat me to it.
But just adding, isn't it ironic that dragons will mate with anything from ogres to demons to elves to humans.... but somehow crossing their own color line is too taboo? Damn dragony bigots.

Yes, I found my lore source for my miquote... in 4e, a Purple Dragon is what they call what we know as a Shadow Dragon in 3.5.

Everyone knows ectoplasm dragons are the best. They shoot a sticky mucus as their breath weapon. How much better can it get?
"Head cold?"
"No, my mom was a Ectoplasm dragon. *wachoo!*"

Im not an expert on it but my opinion is the reason they sometimes mate with humans/demons etc is because they are magic using races and once you learn shapeshift or druid dragon form.... its all up for grabs lol

IIRC, even if two dragons of different species mated, the result would be the same colour as the mother.

IIRC, two different dragon races don't mate together. Ever.
If they were species, it wouldn't matter if they tried
Yes, that is a joke based on the race-species inconsistencies in D&D. I have a sense of humour. Sue me =P

In the same way that Elves come out as one type of subrace or another, I think Dragons do also. Lots of factors are likely to go into this, maybe one type is more dominant, etc. Point is, whilst the offspring could be known as a 'whatever' born from a 'something else', it will only retain the properties and special abilities as it's parent 'whatever'.

*flails* A red shouldn't be mating with a silver because Reds and silvers are MORTAL ENEMIES.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head would be "bits of string, sealing wax and other fancy stuff"?

I know little Jackie Paper brought him strings a ceiling wax and other fancy stuff...not sure if he ate it though.
Considering the time period he probably ate blotter acid.

You know a post has run its course when people start talking about dragon evolving into chickens.

Well, it happened before!
First you had dinosaurs, and they became chickens. Now you got dragons, and they will become chickens too. It's saurian entropy.
It's as simple as that.

This is my response to any and all types of crossbreeding:
In this particular example we see how stone genasi animals are spawned in a natural habitat.
