It's been sometime since I've played on Amia. I'm considering coming back, but i think alot of the problem is influenced by the pvp system used by the module.
There's No penalty practically what-so-ever. I think it provokes players to think if they lose in a pvp scenario well, no bigg. I'll just respawn in 5 mins or so. Idk what provoked the invention of this pvp system either. Sorry, but this is MY opinion, this sys. sucks.
I hate to break it to people, but death has tolls and life has conflict. As does any good rp. I just think a decent pvp death penatly needs to be implemented. I'm not trying to broadcast a rant of negetivity here guys, or critizize the DMs abilities, but THAT"S WHAT DMS ARE HERE FOR...
Plots, Stability, and of course enforcment.
Ending this short...If pvp is out of hand just read logs and start banning. I think if it happens more often and a decent xp/gold penatly is put in place for pvp deaths players would become more weary of random smashings.
Most of all though players just need to grow more mature and keep anothers fun factor in mind.
Just my cents

And what's fun about being constantly killed by people who can build better than you can, and suffer horrible penalties for it?

Its been an ongoing argument for years. We've lost plenty of good players really because of this. But I guess the rest have just accepted. Amia is amia it is for light RP.

I asked Tormak to delete my post as soon as I learned that it was a sticky.

The ability to remove gold and XP by killing someone in PvP is probably one of the more exploitable and griefable things you could add to a server, closely sitting next to the ability to remove items.

If you kill them, those who care about the RP will RP it regardless of the penalty.
Those who don't, won't.
All it will do is lead to OOC hard feelings.

Tormak is right, of course.
Implement penalties, and there are those players who will PvP more just because it frecks the victim over more than the present system does.

I really doubt people leave this server because there are no PvP-penalties.
I am also rather sure people will leave this server if there are PvP penalties.
Current setup seems a winner.

If you want death to hurt, you can always ask a DM to dock some XP off.
But automated XP docking would not only be exploitable, but it would fuck up several classes in case they got deleveled in the process. I mean, fuck them up in a way that would require remaking from scratch or admin fixing them.
So no, you will not have the fun of reducing each others' XP at the expense of admins and DMs doing completely unneeded extra work of fixing characters.
Just... NO.

Yeah, I know one or two people that would purposely PK people just so they lose that XP/Gold.
And, as for the "I'll be back later or tomorrow anyway" thing, I know it's annoying, I've witnessed it myself many times, said to me, or someone else, but you shouldn't get so worked up about it, it is just a game and you should avoid letting other people ruin it for you.
And if they are ruining your gaming experience, find an IC way of getting them back for the grief they caused you IC'ly, or just avoid them. Not the best solution, but it's better than nothing?
If not, it could get to the point of repetition where it just seems like they are purposely grieving, warn/ask them to stop, take screenies, if they persist I'm sure you know what to do afterwards. If they aren't grieving, they will likely stop straight away, likely not realising how you felt/feel about, if they were grieving, depending on who it is they will probably still stop anyway, because I doubt they want to be thrown from the server for something so petty.

If you meet someone likeminded when it comes to these sorts of things, I promise that it will be very enjoyable to do the whole "I hate you and will kill your family and eat all the apples on your trees" rp. But it is nice to have the freedom to rp how you would like. Imposing death penalties or preventing someone from playing their PC is not very kosher. If there is an agreement, then everything is lovely.
Sometimes I have not played my character for days, and sometimes I have only had a short break (if the PC was killed). It really depends on the situation.

Although I would say the amount of people leaving would be far greater if there was an introduced death penalty.

I agree, also, how people can badly grieve with the current system and have done in the past is bad enough, implementing a system with penalties would just make the grievers one-hundred times worse and the only fun in the game would by experienced by them, until banned.
I'm just thinking, why give them a larger opportunity to ruin the game for people who just want to get on with some interesting and/or funny RP with as little problems as possible.

We shouldn't be so avers eto conflict, but forcing XP and gold loss on people is not the way to acclimate people. I feel no desire to cater to "people who just want to get to the funny and interesting RP [sic] but don't feel adding mechanical (as in XP/GP) penalties to PvP is the wya to win people to my side.

I've been a supporter of some penalties for PvP death for a long time, though. Not permanent, no XP or level loss, not something you can use for grieving. Instead, perhaps a temporary, undispellable penalty to abilities, to make you move slower. Maybe dizziness. Something that would only hit once (so you couldn't be PvP'd repeatedly for cumulative effect) and would go away with time. Maybe 20 minutes cooldown time, until you are able to rest again (also block resting immediately after being PvP'd).
That would give death a bit of zing, without making it truly hampering for the player's gaming experience, methinks.

I didn't mean people getting into PvP and wanting to get straight ti their interesting RP without penalty for the previous event. I ment when certain people try to force PvP any way they can, even though they don't have reason to, which then disrupts whatever RP the other person/people were in, so instead of happily carrying on with that RP, they have to put up with someone wanting to kill them for their PvP fix of the day.

Gentleman duels could be done in arenas? That's the proper way, anyway! Proper challenge and gathering audience, before performing the duel at certain location, at certain hour. If you fail to appear after being challenged, you lose.

I thought proper gentleman duels were done in some out-of-the-way place with no one but the 'referee' and the witnesses?

Do you get entertained and amused by getting your ass handed to you on a plate by someone stronger and on top of that getting penalties for the fact that you lost?
Good RP, you say? Then how about, I don't know, RPing those same penalties? Not everyone will do it, but those who care won't be running around like crazy after someone just made a jigsaw puzzle out of them.
Leave it to the players to decide which penalties do they want via their own RP.
I for one wouldn't want to be forced to make ANOTHER round of grinding just because someone felt like kicking my butt in pvp.
Imho, of course...

Doesn't remove the fact, that powerbuilds would rule. And players with powerbuilds would have the power to decide just what is an insult.
It's role play server, not roll play server.

That doesn't change most things - a couple of powerbuilds can knock out three or four other characters, which is usually the most of any one faction that is on unless everyone is in the same timezone.
And what if you are picked off on your own Does your faction have the right to hunt this person down and murder them? That sounds like a step towards potential complaints about griefing.

Quote: That sounds like a step towards potential complaints about griefing If someone complains about a faction hunting him down cause he killed a member of that faction.....Well I dont really know what to say words cannot describe how low that person is and should seriously rethink not only the game but his entire life.
I also am not a fan of seeing XP and Gold loss. Apart from looting a corpse they are nothing more then OOC punishments it wouldn't make sense a wizard suddenly forgeting how to cast a spell (Unless he got hit on the head I suppose).
I like the idea of the character that has been beaten down have some ability decreases and speed reduce. That way if they do eventually get up on there own it would be like them not actually dying but are so weak and can barely drag themselves to somewhere to heal. Not being able to rest is another good idea.

That I have no problem with.
And I was referring to powerbuilds griefing factions if there's gold and xp loss

Firstly theres always gonna be powerbuilds is something we're gonna have to live with. But you know what in RL there are also people out there that are just stronger then other people. And your right they tend to be the bullies. Its just another aspect. You might not like getting pushed around but think of when someone actually stands up to said bullies. It'd be emensly cool to see.
And yes Gold and xp loss is just OOC and I'm a huge believer of doing our best to encourage IC and shun out OOC as much as possible.

Which is all fine and dandy, except if it's for the wrong reasons. If the factions aren't full of powerbuilds, it doesn't matter how many PCs you got against someone. One powerbuild can take out several. That's one of the biggest faults of NWN, that numbers alone don't count against a single strong object.
And all that leads to is an arms race. For better builds, for better equipment. If you are not useful in PvP or building in such a world, why should you be included in factions at all? To stand at the sides and cheer while your mates get slaughtered?
No, text-based role-play should be the number one priority. Builds and PvP arms race can be fun additions, but are not and will never be mandatory to play on Amia.

I can live with powerbuilds, powerbuild away if you must, but people don't have to grieve, it's all down to themselves, and that is what we don't need to live with.
A change like this would be so much easier if people just didn't grieve, but that's never going to happen, since some people may only play to grieve others for their own amusement.

Wow its like history.
True its always hurting to see a powerbuild come in and stomp all over a perfectly good RP. But wait they can do that anyway. If on the rare occasion two faction actually went to war you think it would be any different? Hell im dying to be part of a good war of some kind. Yeah, they can. But why give them the extra gratification of causing serious harm to other players with their asshattery? Why force others to suffer for it?
And, why force others to do the same in order to survive, when we got all the tools not to allow it happen? We can have several playing styles alive on this server. And that's a very good thing.

Why not? Patch them up afterwards again and stuff.
I dislike pvp, although it gets my heart pounding, but I just see it that way. You always loose.
So what if your toon doesn't wants to resolve to violence? The other will just keep pushing and dare you to fight him and insult you and you can't say anything back. Why? Because he then has the reason to pvp you.
Mind, that never happened to me before and if someone just does that then its seriously F**** up.
But still, there are others out there who are just here to be pvp happy, those are the same people who leave after getting a toon up to 30 or whatever.
The same people who never RP.
They get bored quickly and fortunately leave.
I also had my fair share of 'I will just be back tomorrow.' and 'Once you kill me my body will just dissolve and I will return to the nearest temple and ready people to find and kill you.'
The later one nearly made me scream at him oocly because the respawn function. Does. Not. Work. ICLY!
At least not that way. Not sure if it just me, but I thought there was something once said along the lines that you can RP being rescued by another adventurer/wardens/rangers/etc, etc.
[sarcasm]
But to get the most out of all it, and let everyone Rp more serious. Why not include perma dead?
Then people would play more priests too, to heal people or revive them when they died.
Of course for that we also would need to remove all the raise dead scrolls.
Why not? Would all make it so much more realistic and gritty and serious.
[/sarcasm]
No offense though, but death penalties are not the way to go.
What you need to change is the mindset of people, so that they will treat it more serious. A cost for dieing won't change the mind, but just the behavior.
If everyone makes a bigger deal out of people actually dying, then perhaps something would be changed.

True its always hurting to see a powerbuild come in and stomp all over a perfectly good RP. But wait they can do that anyway. [/quote]
Sorry but at least when I play, no, they cant do that. If I am RPing and some random lvl 30 with a half-orc Dev Critter comes and takes my character out, without any indication there is RP behind it, I will leave my pixelated dead corpse there, until the person Raises it, ignore the fact completely, so everyone has their fun. The person behind the character feels like smashing pixels? Fine, do it all they want, I will just pretend it doesnt happen, same way I pretend my character is *nodding*, *flying*, *jumping in the lake*. IMHO people should be very careful when differentiating between PvP (negative connotation, Player versus Player), and CvC (character versus character).

I can't quite get over the following bit of Eh? Whu? Howzatwurk?
Problem: People are being twunty with the gentle PvP system.
Solution: Get a harsh PvP system where twunts can be much twuntier.
Does not compute.

i love to play evil characters but actually hate PvP cause im not good at making builds. i generally always end up getting beat in fights anyway.
i like to think that when you die in PvP you cant go telling others in group who just killed you, because you dont remember any of the events prior to dieing. theres bound to be some affect to experiencing death right? not sure what the penalty should be but diffenetly something light cause i always thought PvP was sort of the last option you take when you rp'in!
only thing in my opinion that should be touched is xp/gold penalty when you die PvM because it would make people worry more about dieing when trying to lvl up.

This sums it up quite nicely, with my favourite derogatory remark

That's what I'd do personally, but I know that a lot of people aren't me and don't have my attitude to PvP and powerbuilding.

If you really want to get hardcore about you're PvP, just make an OOC agreement with the person to turn off the PvP widget. Then whoever loses doesn't get the automatic raise and you can just leave them lying there dead until someone comes along and raises them or they hit the respawn (thus causing an XP and GP hit).
Not something that I would do, but I'm not a huge PvP person. I'm not scared of it by any means, but if I fought with every person one of my drow ran across that wanted a fight, it's all I'd ever do.
