I've been working on a weapon master character, though there is this one snag I've encountered.
Roleplaying the Weapon Master class; does a weapon master just happen to be a person who is really good at killing things? But there seems to be more to it with that ki thing.
So the question is, what does being a Weapon Master entail for the character RP-wise? Does he have to be clear of mind like the monks?
As in, how Palemasters are for the necromancy side of things, Divine Champions happen to be religious and monks strive to be clear of mind etc.

I doubt it. When WM's use ki, it means more or less that they are "one" with their weapon, from what I remember of the lore. It's just an extension of their body, their mind.
They can still be as effed up in the head as they wanna be, hence the class's openess to all aligns. And even then, the WM may not even have a concept of "ki". All they could know is that they've used one weapon for a really long time, they're savants with it, and it means something to them. I in fact know of a WM char who ICly thinks the whole "ki" thing is rather familiar spirits, animal totems and whatnot.
Now OoCly and lorewise, the truth remains the same, WM's use ki. But whether they're clear in the head or lunatics varies as much as it does with any other pan-alignment class.

IIRC technically a WM does have a monk-like relationship with their Chosen Weapon and they actually are channeling Ki through it.
That doesn't mean you have to RP it that way (most don't).
My WM, for example, is not a Weapon Master in that sense. If she were to pick up any other Bastard Sword she probably couldn't wield it. Her sword is a family heirloom and has some "special" properties to it that means only a member of her bloodline can use it. On an OOC level, whatever Bastard Sword is appropriate at the time is "her" sword.

It varies. My Weapon Master believes in honour his blade. He won't sully his blade with dishonourable foes, and refuses to use it to kill innocents or such. He thinks that by honouring his blade it empowers his art. He also uses tactics in battle, and the effectiveness of these tactics are shown in amazing critical hits.
He can use any bastard sword in this way, as long as he continues to honour his blade in battle.

On the one side you have Ki, and on the other side you have the absolute intuition. Like everything else where you have reached a certain level of excellence, the rules move to the background and the automation and instinct move to the foreground. He doesn't have to be clear of mind at all, simply when he fights with his weapon. A Kung-Fu master can still be a jackass. It's not so much about ideology but about knowing every step so well that they become a part of you, and then you gain a "second understanding" of the whole thing that much exceeds the first, academic one.

I don't want to derail the topic but I'll happily shoot you a PM of why Torin is competent in unarmed combat as a result of soulknife-y stuff if you like? I'm not just a lolmonk.

I wish more WMs rped the mystical side to the class. "Just a really good fighter" is the most boring approach of them all, IMO.

I remember when Yuri schooled Torin about swordsmanship. It's a shame you don't see many people wanting to do something like that. It was fun.

My Weapon Masters:
1)Frank, the fella that Dark Immolation mentioned. When fighting with a handaxe, he goes into a trancelike state where(in his head) his Ki takes the form of a flying squirrel spirit animal guiding his strikes.
b)Stillborn, who doesn't even think he lives in his own body, he's that attached to greataxes. If Stilly ever spoke to people(and he doesn't) he'd say he was a ghost-type-thing who hovers around the Stillborn+Greataxe unit and uses the absurdly strong halforc as a puppet. It's not true, mind. He's just a horse of a greenskin who's quite bright by their standards but is also a very quiet, focussed and slightly creepy brand of completely insane.
4) Sturli, who is just a dwarf who's good with a heavy flail. Meh. Yawn. Don't play him any more. I suppose I could RP his WMness as calling on the ancient hairy grumpiness of his revered ancestors. Never did, though.
Basically, if there's something spiritual that the WM takes from himself and sends that into his or her weapon(s) of choice, so that the line between conscious control and the spirity thing is blurred or nonexistent, then you're fine.
I don't think that should only be the eastern kungfu style of RP that can access Ki, since it's a real force in DnD; I don't see why other people couldn't find it too. Conversely, getting something mechanical without 'paying' for it in RP smells.

Yurell wrote: Weapon Masters are from Oriental Adventures and as such they decided to add the whole 'mystic' feel to it.
I checked the wizards website and turns out they are actually from Sword and Fist, A guidebook to Fighters and Monks page 38
It was just copied to oriental adventueres. As for the weapon master class rp. I will bluntly admit the reason I took weapon master for one of my characters was because pure fighter doesn't work buildwise. I never really fiddled with the whole ki buisness.
I took weapon master to reflect the careful and dedicated arms training my warrior had underwent not because he knew how some ki energies work.
I've skimmed through both Sword and Fist and Oriental adventures, from what I could see there is at best a few lines what the weapon masters actually are. That said I think it is great if somebody begins to rp that paticular aspect of that class but it should not be a requirement to have weapon master levels.

I don't like it because if it's okay to get Ki toys without having Ki in your RP, then why is it not okay to get Paladin toys without Paladin obligations in your RP? Or Deathless Mastery and Boneskin without being hated as a Palemaster?

Because the normal classes that give the desired effect are not avaliable in NWN.

Urm..they don't tell me what the classes do.
I'll concede there's a good bit of wiggle room for trying to emulate a PnP class but that's not quite the same as ignoring the Ki/Pally-gods/undead-grafting that give your powers. You're still explaining where they come from, so if the PnP abilities are close enough to the NWN powers, I'd not have much grounds to grumble.
Still looking for examples of that. You don't have to stick to Pally/PM/WM, mind.

Shamans of Nobanion are given access to certain combat feats among which is a wild attack (I forget it's name) which works almost exactly the same as Flurry of Blows except that in PnP it gives an exhaustion penalty after use. That's why my Druid has Monk levels.

Again, I agre with Ruce.
Why should one ignore one of the core pieces of a class because it is merely inconvenient to follow them? If this is justifiable, what of Paladins and Palemasters (and druids / clerics to some extent)?
If you're RPing it as a different class, should you still be allowed access to WM only weapons (which are ki-empowered IIRC for the justification of retaining their OOC warnings)?

Most of those OOC warnings are gone, if not all, because 2d8 sonic doesn't represent anything to do with Ki.

and yes I noticed the gust breaker is usable by anyone now, but the real decent sword was taken off the market anyways, razerblade, be nice if the put it in a difficult shop to get to again.. or I could be happy as having one of the last razerblades sold
I roleplay Mari's sword being an extension of her will, just for some "unknown" reason.. no one ever has asked her.. why she hits so hard. but then again.. if I was in dnd.. I would either, and she's my creation.

With Kir'nack, I do/did try to RP some kind of a spiritual level to the art of swordplay. Meditation, philosophical ponderings of the sword, drawing a connection between art and swordplay, background in religious heavy fighting (trained by Selvetargtlin), etc. I didn't have a very clear definition of what he believes, how he fights and where his powers come from, though. He wasn't supposed to be exotic, just your regular soldier who had the opportunity to devote himself to the finer points of war and his weapon as he gained more social status.

If you're a WM, would another WM be able to recognise that you're using Ki? I'd expect a monk to be able to spot that sort of thing (courtesy of glowing eyes).

Probably not on a WM's part, espically if he's unaware that it's Ki.
Not sure about the Monk, though I'd hope not honestly. Last thing I'd personally want is every Monk on the island deciding to tell my WM about how he's using Ki and not tactics or honour to empower his blade strikes. Ruin my character concept rather soundly.

In terms of sensing it via supernatural means, I'd say no. However...
Assuming no Sneaks, my DEX WM on x4 does pretty much the same crit damage as a STR-base Fighter on x3, and I'd imagine the difference in their fighting style is pretty obvious: Frank is much slicker at finding the weak spots. I reckon you'd have a hard time telling thirdparty the difference between a 70 crit and a 100 crit, but thre's no mistaking the number of times the nasty hits crop up.
The question there is whether there's anything else except the supernatural force that Monks call Ki which grants this w00ty ability to find gaps in natural or equipped armour.
I'd say no, with exceptions made for non-NWN prestige classes that come pretty close(I must admit I've never been 100% sold on the whole emulating classes thing). Thus, anyone who knows about Ki (whatever name and form they give to it) will guess that another WM is using it. Frank, for example, normally asks other WMs what their spirit animal is, and has a hard time believing they don't have one.
With respect to Sokar's quandry, it sounds like it's on the thin end of the wedge that ends with a melee PM who's RPing his Deathless Mastery as 'just being very tough' and getting all grumpy when they get called a Palemaster ICly. There's no other way of getting Deathless Mastery except the undead grafting and other grotesque self-mutilating procedures, so him saying his RP is ruined is a big fat fail since it was a crock to begin with- he should have been a PM ICly as well.

To use a Star Wars analogy, I'd think it would be like a Jedi spotting those who are force-sensitive - sure, can't notice at a glance, but after a bit it starts to look that way.

Daniel sees his kamas as substitute claws, since once upon a time he was a proud dragon, but ended up being cursed and unable to shapechange, kinda forever stuck in his human form. ;)
His Ki, along with his Weapon Mastery of kamas, make him use those weapons as if they were his claws and he deeply and truly believes that they are a part of him, that he has claws even though in human form.
If you know what I mean.
I am sleepy, so, pardon if this is sounding odd. o.O

Okay, I remember what Ki or "Chi" means in real life.
Basically, its some sort of energy used in martial arts. Ki strikes are strikes made with the strength of soul rather than pure strength. There is of course, as with anything else a great deal of discussion on what Ki -exactly- is, but on the completely basic level:
- Ki is energy in the body
- Ki strikes is channeling that energy through different strikes

Ki is the power used to gather in an almighty blast before unleashing an energy based attack like Kamehamaeha. When it reaches full capacity, one may turn super saiyan.

I wouldn't analyze ki in D&D too much. It's just mystical power, (in my mind) related and of the same source as all magic and other supernatural powers, and can manifest in a variety of forms that are not pre-determined: nothing prevents completely new manifestations from being born.
That said, the WM powers are clearly supernatural. (Insofar as you don't consider the origin of all magic natural to the Realms; a phenomenon that transcends physicality, nontheless.) How they come to be, how they appear and how much the WM knows about them should be up to every player to decide for themselves, but I wouldn't ignore that aspect altogether in WM RP.

Taelar is well aware he is using Ki. In fact, I RP that his preternatural strength comes from his ability to channel ki into raw physical power in addition to him channeling it into his weapon. His command of ki is much less refined than a monks though, which is why when he consciously focuses it I.E. in meditation he looks like he's radiating heat like a blacktop road in Nevada at Noon in the summer.

I always like the comparison that Ki is the "Magic Of The Body", Psionics is the "Magic Of The Mind", and Incarnum (a 3.5 supplement, alternate magic system) is the "Magic Of the Soul". This places Weavemagic as "The Magic Of the Planes", and Divine Mgic as "Magic Of The Gods".
A place for everything and everything in its place!

Yep. It even suggests that they're all magic, of the same principle, which is something I personally think has to be assumed (because it's very silly to have so many completely unrelated substances affecting the world). Sounds like a good split. I'll never buy the notion that Ki isn't magical (even if it isn't "Magic" in the mechanical, Weave-related sense). Sure isn't normal, at least!

it's Chi as in Tai Chi the art of moving energies around the body and focusing them on in one spot, I've practiced it some it's mainly meditation(blank mind) in motion as far as Tai Chi is concerned. That is how martial artists masters break bricks, or hits something or someone and it flies back further than physically possibe. I don't roleplay it much but after reading this it does add an extra flair to roleplay. For the most part Rose in the middle of a battle if she uses Ki power forgets everything going on around her focusing to hit one or more Vital organs as hard as she can. That is why undead are immune to critical hits, they have no vital organs to aim at lol.

On a related matter, why does every orcish weapon master talk like he's suffered too many head wounds? You HAVE to have at LEAST a 13 Int. You're SMARTER then the average man.

Ask them why? Learn their story.
Just because he's smart doesn't mean he could speak a foreign language fluently. Likewise, an 8 int person who grew up speaking common should be able to speak it. IMO.
