I know I am preaching to the choir when it comes to most forum users, but maybe this'll catch the eye of some newer players as it hangs at the top of the forum for a while, so bear with me.
Firstly, the rules are there for a reason (several in fact), and because we don't want you do to something in the first place. We don't want you to 'sin' and say a few Ave Maria's afterwards to make it OK to sin. Or, the point isn't that you can break the rules all you like, as long as you take the punishment and go on your merry way.
Secondly, if you're consciously breaking a rule, don't expect the DM who catches you to be very happy. (As opposed to 'conscious rulebreaking', you could be angered at another player and thus doing something you wouldn't do at another state of mind. Doesn't make the DMs happy, either, but at least you have an explanation, and room for improving.)
Third and most important point: not knowing the rules is not an excuse to get away with something! You are expected to read the rules to play on the server, so if you don't take time to get to know the customs of this server, it's your own fault.
Almost everybody messes up at some point, but not everybody gets their third chance. It depends on you, the player's, attitudes to the rules and your fellow players whether you'll get one or not.
Thanks for reading, I felt that this needed refreshing once again.
On a related topic...
It's a common claim I hear, that DMs like to target individual players for "random" punishment etc etc. Well, I have some news for anyone who thinks that: better deflate your ego down a grade or few, the chances that the DMs take such personal interest in any player they may haven't even heard of before, are essentially and practically zero.
We may be DMs who spend a lot of our spare time on this game, but we really got better things to do than purposefully pick on random individuals over the internet. I bet it would get really boring after a while, too.

I still love that guy who said he hoped you got raped. Fastest, most permanent ban ever.
Anyway, don't mess with the Terminehkor; she's vicious and relentless and can only be stopped by new shoes.

You forgot 'Funniest'.
And, what about the guy who cussed me out? If you remember it. The longest stream of cusses ever. I swear, he must've been Aussie in denial.

Just point and laugh at people who cuss at DM's or other players oocly.
The server is like a house, you get invited and you can play there, get something to drink and eat. But you never ever would insult the owner of the house and still expect to be able to stay around.
But that is the internet for you, to many inflated ego's.

Umm... He may not have the "DM" part, but that player is still around and pretty active and using almost that same name. I thought the issue was with character names, not logins?

For his sake, I hope we don't speak of the same dude here. What Disco is referring to is someone who logged in with that as their character name ages ago.

I'm talking about someone's login, not a character name. As I said, he's pretty active so I don't see how any of the staff could have missed the name.

A friend I play with pretty often has been forum banned for like one and a half years soon for posting a motivational picture (which didn't contain any shocking imagery, he showed it to me) in some BAAAAAAWWWWW & attentionwhoring -thread about rape RP.
You people surely are zealous about that stuff. Oh and he wanted to convey a message with my forum account:

A romanian does. Every heard a romanian ''lady'' go all out to a shop clerk? It's not very fun to listen at. Actually, it's scary.

We should have a party for people who have never done any of the above! Woo! Go good players!
Also, the biggest reason I'd ever want to be a DM is to read all the shmawesome stories of people getting banned like that. Bahahahaha. There have to be other really good ones..... whew. I could have a party all by myself in that thread, I bet.

Try to beat that. It's not that far fetched in Dutch. Translation would be something like Goddamned-in the grave-cancer-typhoid-tuberculosis-vagina-testicles-retard.
In The Hague they can do MUCH better, btw. We so love each other in the Netherlands.

Pft, Northern norwegians beat more or less everyone when it comes to cussing. The number of words they have for various animal genitalias is quite impressive.

I'd also like to add that I'd really love it if people said more than "DM?" "Hello DM?" in DM channels.
I dunno about the rest of the team, but if I'm in the middle of roleplay or eventing and you're like "DM?" as opposed to "Pardon me can I please have 756 xp removed?" I'm much more likely to bop on over if I see the latter. So if you need something quick (Delevel, xp removal, self rebuild..) just ask straight away.
Also, self rebuilds are much nicer when your stuff is in bags.

Pffft. . .i totally come up with interesting ways to beg a DM to rebuild my characters.
"Dear E-god, i humbly pray at alter of spare time, please bring me the gifts of gear mulage to a self rebuild"
or in Lallies case
"Dear change_head#17, i humbly filter#4 sparetime, please bring me the gifts of /.p"

If there's more than one DM online, giving a brief statement of what's wrong already in your first call to the DM channel also makes it easier for the DMs to decide who's answering what. All of us DMs have areas of knowledge we're either very familiar with, or completely lost. It's simply more effective and easier to help when the first look gives us the idea of the matter.

Notepad lets you type your message in one go, so you can have hello and request. It's what I do (NWN takes up only half the page).

To add to the original post, it's really quite stupid to say you didn't know the rules if you're caught doing something wrong. When you enter the server for the first time with a character, you are REQUIRED to say "Yes, I've read the rules" if you want to get into the game. If you lie your way through, well, don't blame us. We try our best to point you at forums.
It really is one of the best ways to get DMs and players annoyed at you. But as said, it's not our loss if you don't read the rules. It's only your loss when you get banned/stripped/deleveled/whatever as a reward for your laziness to use that goo inside your skull.
