i've been wondering about the spells dominate person and dominate monster. what exactly will each spell affect? will dominate person only work on creatures with the 'humanoid' subtype? and dominate monster works on everything else? how do you know which spell to use?

Dominate Person is a cheap, low level spell. Dominate Monster is a high level spell and works on anything with thought: People, Monsters, Animals, etc. It's a bit of a "catch all" spell for intelligent beings. The only intelligent beings you can't dominate, that I can think of, are sentient undead: Lich, Vampire, Ghoul, Ghast, etc.

i was thinking more along the lines of the game mechanics. If i cast dominate person, how does nwn determine what a 'person' is and therefore affected by the spell. also, what is considered a 'monster' for the spell dominate monster.
Spell level: bard 4; sorcerer/wizard 5
Innate level: 4
School: enchantment
Descriptor: mind-affecting
Components: verbal, somatic
Range: medium (20 meters)
Area of effect: single creature
Duration: 2 rounds + 1 round / 3 caster levels
Save: will negates
Spell resistance: yes
Additional counterspells: clarity
Description: The target person temporarily becomes a faithful and loyal servant of the caster.
Spell level: sorcerer/wizard 9
Innate level: 9
School: enchantment
Descriptor: mind-affecting
Components: verbal, somatic
Range: medium (20 meters)
Area of effect: single creature
Duration: 3 turns + 1 / level
Save: will negates
Spell resistance: yes
Description: The target monster temporarily becomes a faithful and loyal servant of the caster.

I believe:
Person = humanoid
Monster = anything that's not immune to being dominates

That's what I wrote. I wasn't giving you my opinion, I was telling you what it worked on.

Yes, but you didn't say what Dominate Person worked on

Just wanted to make a few points clear for those reading about this spell...
It's a mind spell, you can't ICly 'see' mind spells and know they are mind spells unless
A. you saw it just get cast and have spell craft/lore/or saw it happen before.
B. you talk to the person/thing and it's obviously not acting normal in it's speech/behavior.
Those lights above the head...not indicators for automatic IC knowledge.
----
Another point...using mindblank potions or clarity potions on yourself 'after' being dominated, also not very IC.
Thanks for reading!
---
Do I expect all the the above to be followed all the time in game? ...not in a million years, Do I heavily rely on dominate monster as a useful pvp spell? h*ll no. It's an rp spell as is, or for pvm.
I realize I'm preaching to the choir as they say but thought it was a good place for a song or two.

Normally in pnp you'd get to roll a sense motive check for such occasions. With boni the better you know the person.

As much as I agree with you ordinarily, I've always found it easiest to take that as WYSIWYG. If yo have glowey lights above your head, your character has glowey lights above their head, at least to anyone with enough spellcraft anyway.

As much as i agree with you azrael on the mechanics of the spell, not everyone will always go with that. So as a general rule i just assume WYSIWYG so i dont get thrown a curve ball in my rp when the other person has knowledge of spells like that, and i wasn't expecting them to. Just makes it easier to assume WYSIWYG, if you can 'see' it they can 'know' it.
