I believe it was banned a long time ago (before my DM time), but I can't seem to find it in the rules.

I couldnt find it in the rules, and I was playing with the idea of a character who comes out from the pits of south cordorian society and while I do not intend to have the character keep that profession, I do not wish to have it just as a backstory. Now, would this be only discouraged or do I need to expect a ban for this?
Edit:
Now, if it would be banned, would there be a way to get it unbanned for a certain character through a manner of a "platinum request" or "whore request" if it was stated to which manner, why and how it would be conducted?

I dont really understand this ban, if the only reason is to avoid cybering, why such characters would be more prone to do so than many others that I see. They may revolve around sex, but I see enough other PCs who do the same.
And if I'd be interrested to use this character for this reason, which I am not, then I could just move it to msn anyway and respect others may wish to use the slot for a less priviate rp session. Or just log into kinky kingdom where I do not need an excuse of a proffession to do so.
I remember Nekhy posting about it being banned about the same time the 'Discreet' cybering stance was taken, moving it to tells only in game. IIRC

I agree with you Phearnun. With as many characters that are running around sleeping with everything with two legs, (and some with more) I don't personally see a problem with a prostitute character who gets paid to emote [fade to black]
That said, I think prostitution rp was banned entirely.
When the rule was made, I believe part of the reasoning was this: while cybering was not outright banned in private, it was certainly not encouraged. Therefore, PCs created for the sole purpose of offering cybering services to other PCs/players weren't welcome on Amia. This makes sense to me, and it's something I have a faint memory of.
I suppose the rule still stands: your character may be a "prostitute" (and a background is perfectly fine), but RPing prostitution with PCs or with specified NPCs isn't allowed. The rule might be reviewed in the future, but I reckon that's how it is now.

Yes, I like Hoars very much. And Hoaring around in general too.

There was a prohibition on "prostitution RP" implemented early in 2007 (after I'd been playing Xavi for about 5 months ). The quote can be found in this post.

4. Roleplaying restrictions Roleplay that's clearly sex-driven or promoting cybering, such as prostitution, is not permitted. Sexual roleplaying is not a focus of Amia, and shouldn't be the focus of a character. The DM staff will determine what is "crossing the line" case-by-case. Rape is NEVER an acceptable RP scenario, however, and neither active nor passive contribution is allowed.
Interestingly, this section doesnt seem to appear in the most recent version of the rules, though I expect that this is an oversight, as the policy on cybering & related RP has gotten tighter since 2007, rather than looser.
The most relevant portion now reads
Nekhy wrote:
By cybering, or cyber-sex, we mean descriptive, detailed emotes or talk of bodily acts performed with the aim of sexual gratification of the character or of the player in mind. Sexual acts that a normal, non-exhibitionist person wouldn't do in front of their mother are cybering. Kissing, hugging and mild expression of affection and sexuality are acceptable.
To my knowledge, the situation is that playing a currently-active prostitute is a no-no. Obviously, the player should not be engaged in cybering, but whether or not the DMs would allow such a character to exist where all such activities are performed (or are said to be performed) "off-screen" is something that would have to be decided by them. I rather expect that the answer would be a 'no'.

I've taken over the hussies in south cordor pretty often. Usually when I'm in the south and a PC's just standing in front of one which happens often. You funny people.
"Former" hookers PC played? Meh I got no issue with that. Call her a courtesan. They were awesome.

Yes, Xavi: leaving it out of the rules must have been an oversight. It was no conscious decision we made during the time I've been on the team.
And yes, I reckon we make the decision of what crosses the line case-by-case: if you come to us with a great character concept that includes prostitution (perhaps assassins/spies who pose as courtesans?) and ask to play one, we'll probably consider it like any special request. I can only speak for myself, but I don't see why we shouldn't accept a PC like that, if it clearly wasn't aimed at cybering or "social" RP.

Cory wants to be mobbed by our female staff when he least expects it, obviously.

What about like a high class bordello/assassin, type thing, with fancy ladies who can kill in lingerie? No sex, but lots of hot action.....and usually a hit...heh
Just watch that you don't stray into the realm of science-fiction. I'll be right back after my treatment is one great way to have your fellow players in gigglefits.
Before this rule was implemented, there was -alot- of alternative accounts created where playeres looking for GP for a cybering scene.
It was an easy way for players to make money at low levels through RP, I had alot of fun with Ray during this time mugging the hookers behind the old cordor temple, up in the old nomad good times

Actually Phearun brings up some good points on the job front. I can see the same level of abuse from the massuse role. I mean, ever had the "Full Body Massage" at a massage palor.

I'm with Phearnun and Maryn on this one. With all the whoring around going around IG, I don't see an issue with prostitutes.
Why let people who want to be "creative" about it get away with it and the blunt get the short end? At the end of the day, everyone has to fade to black or risk being banned anyway. If prostitutes are banned, I would strongly suggest getting rid of the prostitutes NPCs. It's promoting something that's supposed to be discouraged.
That said, I have a character who whored around in the past to survive and put food on the table. Doesn't do it anymore, but still. I hope back story stuff like that isn't banned. Not that anyone knows about it anyway, never been said IC thus far.

I gotta say... seriously folks? It's being done, it's always been done, it will always be. Cybering, whoring, prostitutes... if you have prostitute NPCs, there is no way you can pass Amia as a "PG" server... which it isn't. The game is rated Teen to Mature. And I think by the time you're a teen, you know about the naughty.
Let's face it, there are really only 2000 or so players left worldwide for NWN. Most of us are adults, or at least mid to late teens, especially ones that are on RP servers. No little kid wants to play NWN, it's all about Halo, GTA, Soul Calibur... NWN is old school, and for older people now.
I'm not saying Amia should be a social server but really.... is this even really worth punishing people about if they are being discreet about it?

If you didn't punish that sort of behaviour, and did allow that sort of thing, then the next thing you know there would be a disclaimer convo at the entry area.
Allowing such RP sends the wrong message to prospective players who may well be adults but don't want to have to deal with adult situations when playing their character. There are other servers for that sort of thing, deal with it.

I find it's best to just avoid the topic, just for safety, except maybe referencing something that happened in the past.

I do agree there - if something is banned, it's best to not have it in the world at all, that way everyone just doesn't mention it unless they're deliberately trying to break suspension of disbelief.

There's a fine line between assumption of something happening, and something happening.
On Amia, there's this illusion and expectation, that all sort of things happen in certain parts of cities etc. to create a scene and to create a story. And that's all there is to it. You won't get services from that hooker NPC at the corner, because that hooker NPC is there to create an illusion of prostitution, and not to actually offer services.
Same applies to players.
It's a bit like all those locked doors. You know someone lives behind the door, something's happening when you don't see it. Life goes on in the background without you witnessing it, or taking part to it.

Yea! We certainly don't want to send any more messages, I mean look at the ones we're already sending!
Mass group killings! Intolerance via tolerance! Elitism! Devil worshipping!
I mean, it's not like Amia's already not a pretty mixed up bag of beans... if the player wishes to RP a prostitute, and then gets busted cybering...guess what!
They'll get banned, and the system works!
It's called self accountability / social accountability.
I know, difficult subject.
And yes, MOther Goose, I'm being sarcastic, but the point is valid. Don't shoot the messenger due to the message

This is a fantasy setting, and every good fantasy deserves a happy ending.
Yeah right, like when you fall asleep in massage place in Nanchang and wake up to see a gaggle of Chinese women pointing at your bits and giggling. It's not a happy ending. Because you fell macho and then realize they are laughing because someone stole your pants and shoes.

It may be permitted in a few cases if you take a good look at the rules, but to me in doesn't seem particularily sensible to rp a prostitute on a server that banned about any option to play out the dirty stuff. It just doesn't seem a smart career move to me.
