1. Do monks always have to come from an order? Can a monk be self-trained? (if not, I fear we have a "chicken or egg" follow up question :p)

2. Even though it's not implemented in NWN, how does "Tongue of the Sun and Moon" work? Does it also mean you can understand when they talk back to you?

1. No and Yes.

2. Its a PnP feat, so you need the permission of the other player to make use of it.

I wrote down some Monk clarifications, but I didn't publish them (yet). I'll just paste it here. It my interepretation, but I have made every attempt to stay as accurate and true to canon information as possible. You should (hopefully) not find any mistakes, and my "own" contribution is kept to a minimum, in the inevitable form I give to the ideas I've found in canon sources:

Quote:
The Monk

The many monks of the Realms have various goals and ideals they strive to achieve through rigorous training and mental discipline. There are many methods and doctrines, but they can be roughly divided into two: religion and mundane philosophy. Theistic monks contemplate and follow the doctrines of their patron deity, while philosophical monks base their training on some other school of thought – be it the traditional teachings of a respected master or a personal code of ethics. This division is somewhat artificial: even the most religious of monks apply techniques that aren't derived solely from holy texts, and the majority of philosophical monks do worship the gods and a specific patron deity, even if the divine isn't the source of their discipline.

Monks generally learn their art by joining a large, wide-spread monastic Order, by studying in a small monastery with its own, specialized discipline (either based on a respected authority figure's teachings, or connected to a faith), or directly from an individual master (or – more rarely - the writings of one). Yet other ways are possible, if not common. Occasionally, monks will develop new techniques and doctrines and found their own tradition.

Some churches accept monks as part of the formal clergy, alongside clerics and other priestly classes. Others consider monks lay worshipers, alongside fighters and other mundane riff-raff. This is never set in stone: through luck or personal prowess (and RP), anyone can ascend to a religious authority position.

While monks must be Lawful, they may worship any deity (or deities) as patron. The ”One-Step Rule” only applies to divine spellcasters (and even then, is not absolute). Not all deities are a likely choice for a monk, of course, and not all churches are fond of monks. The lack of a documented monastic order does not mean such an order doesn't exist: it might not be prominent enough to attract public notice. Furthermore, even if a given church clearly has no monastic order, individual monks may join the ranks of the clergy. What's more, there may be churches with no monks in their ranks and deities with no monk worshipers so far, but a monk follower of the faith would still be a possibility, unlikely or not. Monks do not have to be part of any order or church, documented or otherwise (even if they worship a patron deity).

Monks (on Amia) have no multiclass restrictions apart from those mechanically imposed by alignment. Those who voluntarily adhere to PnP rules on the matter are no closer to Amian canon, or ”better” monks.

Being self-trained is possible, but probably very uncommon. Generally, you would at least have had teaching in basic martial tradition and/or philosophical disciplines. Some monks don't study with a living master, but rather learn from the writings of a deceased one. (See Danica, in the Clerical Quintet.)It's not easy to develop your own style if you have nothing to base it on. But it's not impossible.

I've always interpreted the Tongue of Sun and Moon as a mystical means of communication. It does not imply language proficiency. You certainly cannot read new languages, and it doesn't seem that you can understand conversations in foreign languages around you, nor do you have any theoretical knowledge of foreign languages, such as grammar and syntax. The phrasing of the feat description does not mention anything about learning a language or being able to eavesdrop. It ony implies verbal communication with a target.

What it does allow you to do is to communicate, face-to-face, with a person who doesn't speak your language. You don't suddenly understand the technicalities of the other party's language, you simply manifest your deep understanding of yourself, others and the entire universe as a supernatural awareness. You can understand and communicate meaning in an intimate connection.

A lot of that is just fluff and my way of giving it flavor, but the point remains: you don't learn languages, and communication doesn't involve eavesdropping etc.

Indeed. Agreed in full. I'm glad a DM said this finally.

I always understood the Tongues of the Sun and Moon feat as a sort of a 'walk the earth righting wrongs Kung Fu(TV show)' kind of deal. Or a Jedi mind trick.

Oh, I don't mind my word taken as gospel! If you compare me to Mark, for example, I think I'm pretty clever and eloquent. 8)

But yeah, do remember that I don't have any secret knowledge that isn't available to everyone just by reading the Feat description. Neither have we, the DM team, made any particular decision regarding the Tongue of Sun and Moon. It's a PnP ability and as such, subject to mutual agreement.

For those interested, this is the feat description (I don't know if there are longer versions somewhere):
A monk of 17th level or higher can speak with any living creature.

No implication of understanding the creatures you are not speaking with is given, which is the core point my personal flavor is based on.

So would it work like this in practice?
Fruit Seller: Pomegranates! Pomegranates for sale! Only 5 gold for a dozen!
Foreign Monk can't understand this, but notices the pomegranates and decides to buy some.
FM [TotSaM]: How much for the pomegranates?
FS: 5 gold for a dozen.
FM [TotSaM]: I'll give you 4.
FS: Done!

That's my opinion, yes.

I'll accept one possible looser condition: perhaps the Monk does not have to outright face you and initiate discussion to understand you, yet. But he would have to pay attention, focus his awareness on the person he was trying to understand. It makes sense to treat it as an action that requires some concentration: he wouldn't just casually pick out interesting lines spoken on a busy market. He'd have to turn to watch the fruit seller, and concentrate on understanding.

This level of interpretation goes well beyond what the feat description tells us. This is what I imagine is the intention, though. Just understanding random languages heard by coincidence doesn't fit the Monk theme at all, and has nothing to do with the Monk's training or other abilities (most of which require some kind of mental practice or meditation). The game designers couldn't have meant that when they added the feat. (And clearly, it doesn't even mention that kind of a possibility.)

No, I'm not saying he's right, I'm just saying I agree. Hell, Iron and I have disagreed tons of times. I never said that it was what -had- to be, just that I think it -should- be. ;)

I agree in part with the TotSaM, but it does say "A monk of 17th level or higher can speak with any living creature." I've always interpreted that as the monk being able to talk with anyone she elects, whether that person is talking to her or not.
Define your own conversation, that sort of thing.

And since it doesn't say one person, I'd imagine it could be done with multiple, although I do agree with having to focus ... no casual eavesdropping with it.

Like all PnP spells, take in mind that it would be require a lot more effort to gain most PnP abilities in PnP then it does on NWN. As such, your character probably wouldn't, and shouldn't, know half the abilities he does.

Things like ToSaM, in my opinion, are meant for high level characters who probably have a lot of depth, and restrictions placed on them along their journey to that high level. Unlike Amian high level monks, which a fair percentage likely just grinded from level 1 to 17 with ease, having no restrictions placed by their journey.

When my monks use ToSaM, it's pretty much like Iron described. Of course, with a little more fluff and such. I often rp it before he starts using it something like:

*Focuses intensly on the speaker's mouth as he/she speaks, then remains silent few moments. He begins speaking, jibberish at first, his mouth not even matching up with the syllables. Slowly, he begins to form coherent words and phrases...*

Blah blah, yadda yadda, he talks in the language. He doesn't remember how he sounded speaking the language, nor have any inkling of what language he was speaking, unless he's aware that the target is just speaking a language he knows of, but doesn't know how to speak. If someone asks him later "Hey, did you see or speak to a woman a while ago who spoke Chultan", he'll not know, other than that he spoke to a woman, what they spoke of, and he had to uses his ability to communicate in a language he didn't know. Other than that, they could have been speaking in Dwarven, for all he knows.

I used to rp ToSaM as *Monk speaks in his regular language, but within the target's mind, they hear his voice in their own language*, but I was told that was bordering on telepathy, so adopted the above method. In both cases, my monks had to directly focus on the single speaker, and had to actively think to use the ability, both to understand and be understood. If someone started calling out to them from behind in a foreign language, they'd just hear jibberish, and just as likely to turn around and see what it is as continue walking.

It seem's people are under the assumption they can understand what is said back to them. Unless the person your talking to know's ToSaM, your current language, or has a spell like ToSaM, I don't see how a monk should understand what is said TO them.

Yes, they can speak to someone in the other language, but it's not EoSaM (Ear of Sun and Moon).

That's often the more debated part. Does talk to imply "two way communication"?

I say it does, or the ability is just silly.

Yes, they can speak to someone in the other language, but it's not EoSaM (Ear of Sun and Moon).

Well, as vague as the explanation of the feat is, it comes down to your personal definition of communicate. For most that I've heard, that consists of being underderstood -and- understanding. In that, communicate = talk with. I guess if you take it at its words, its very few, vague words, yes, it means you can only speak to them, and have them understand, but not understand what they say back.

In the latter case, that seems a little pointless to have made the feat. Who cares if everyone can understand you, if can't understand the directions you asked for, you're better off resorting to body gestures and impromtu hand signals. For every monk, including myself, that I've every seen RP ToSaM IG, it means understanding on both parts. Don't blame them, blame the lazy description of the feat.

Edit: Tormak beat me to it lol.

It says "speak with", the latter word being most important (as opposed to "speak to").

The purpose could be, as an example, to talk to other monks of varying regional locations and races, even breaching the planar scope. It could also allow you to speak with wizards of the same variety through their use of tongues and your use of ToSaM, along with a few other such things.

I imagine also speaking with beings beyond a normal mortals ability to communicate with would also be included. Say demons, devils and solars/deva.

Just a few examples of other useful scenerio's. It would certainly then limit the "I can understand everything!" complex that already accompanies a monks "I can resist everything!" complex.

I like the "I can resist everything complex" though. Its one of the fun sides of playing a monk. You might hit like a panzy and can't hit much of anything with a shield...but...they can't hit you either. The idea behind it is to prolong the fight so that it becomes a real duel.

How are you supposed to use those great Bruce Lee one liners, if you can't have a badly dubbed voice over, over the top of your lips when you speak to your opponent?

ToSaM is in fact, subtitled text at the bottom of the screen that your opponent can read.

"You killed my brother, now..I kill you!"

If the ability was supposed to be to communicate with other monks, why would they have put "all creatures" instead of "Can communicate with all monks and outsiders"?

And I don't really see the validity in calling it a "I can understand everything!" feat. As I've said, at least when I rp it, my monk has to concentrate, and it can only be on one target at once time. AND he has to be engaged in the conversation. It's not like he's sneaking around corners and listening in on people. If he did, since he's not in the conversation, all he'd hear is the actual language; he's no communicating, therefore, no use of feat.

I'm not sure where this idea of monks thinking they're completely invunerable comes from either. Sure, if my monk(who's got perfect self) gets in a swarmed by a gang of theives with +0 daggers..uh, yeah. More than likely, unless they have ridic str mods(which they shouldnt have if using +0 weapons), he's just gonna stand there. He'll get moved about a bit I guess by the actually shoving of the daggers, but no piercing... that's what the DR form perfect self would look like ICly.

Other than that, when they get cut, monks still bleed, bruise, scuff, and everything else. It just takes a lot more to do it that to a commoner, the same way it is with every multilevel character. They're superhuman, but not necessarily inhuman.
