Anyways, I'm skeptical that moving the crystals will actually do anything. You people do remember that there already is a crystal inside the nomad, right? And I believe very few people use it. People go where people are because that's where people go... etc etc.
That's why the suggestion is to move the Waukeen spawnpoint there, so that way the Nomad is the first area people go to instead of the square. And if it does nothing ... well, at least it was worth a shot.

What does that accomplish though See my above post.
I don't really have any concise argument to NOT do it, but I don't need to do the work. I'm just saying I don't think it will do much based on past evidence.

If you want to use an inn to roleplay, use a *goes to the inn for a drink* or *drags friendname off to the inn to talk* emote and eventually someone will take the hint and follow your lead. Changing the default crystal locations isn't going to accomplish anything unless people prefer to be in the inn to start with.
Solution: Temple of Waukeen-area becomes an Inn with open planned dining or whatever. The area just outside the inn is precisely where everyone already stands, it just becomes the outside aspect of the inn. Cities tend to build based on such principles anyway, tbh. Cities tend to develop areas where people are already inclined to go.
PS: Cordor needs a trade hall with all the trades there, preferably attached to the market area as well.

One explanation why players don't walk their characters to inns or places where their characters would go, is because they don't want to 'miss out' on what other people are doing. To be blunt, they could get a whole lot more roleplaying done if they weren't constantly butting into someone else's conversation.
Another explanation is that they're simply sticking around because that's what everyone else does.
Either way, if you want to break that cycle and make other areas worth using, you have to go use them even if it looks like nobody else will. Either people will think that getting out of the suddenly noisy square is a good idea, or they'll think that whatever you're doing is way better.
Areas have a natural flow, if cordor was a body than the square would be its heart. All the arteries and veins (ala pathways) connect to it. That is most probably why people go there, because it is intuitively the place to be.

Personally, placing the nodes in Inns is another way of saying, "USE OUR FECKIN' INNS!" And that'd make me NOT want to use them... I hate Temple of Waukeen for that purpose. And I sure as hell don't remain in Winya Ravana spawn point/prison looking place too long either.
But the original idea was good. +1 to Lathandier!

..Cordor square has always been the center.. from back when the Temple of Torm doors ate people, I lost my cushions every reset and Khalon hit people with the bench. It's passed down through generations.
There's plenty of areas to use besides Cordor square. But, and I risk sounding like a broken record, nobody's going to use them if you don't.
Should you use more areas than just Dawson's Square? Yes. No. I don't know. It depends on whether you want to expand your repertoire of roleplaying skill to include more than just stuff you can do while standing near a waterway.
Why should you expand your roleplaying to include other situations? Well when you've been eating froot loops for who knows how long, a little variety is nice. Same reason why TV sitcoms use different locations, you get more laughs if you keep things from getting predictable. Also, uh, if you're on the hunt for DCs, damn sure you're not going to get many by repeating the same old routine a hundred times.

How about a no loitering sign in the square?, maybe even an event to help give it an IC reason, that would force people elsewhere, like the Nomad! *gasp* people NOT standing around Cordor Square for weeks at a time?!
If you do that, an intrepid bunch of adventurers will attempt to re-open the space-time rift to get it back. If they succeed, they will find there's a giant space amoeba waiting to feast on them. Oops.
If you make an IC reason not to be in the square, some other place in the street would become the new hangout. Like the bridge in East Cordor, or the area in front of the gates or something.
What if you charged like 200 gp for an ale and each one awarded 1xp when drunk inside an inn? Nah thats a dumb idea xD

thank the almighty lord Ghaunadaur for your space amoeba!
post count +1 towards derail/lock
EDIT:
but really... RP never gets to the inns and stays where everyone walks through specifically because everyone walks through there. People go where other people will be, and right outside the spawn area is the perfect location. There is an 85% chance that the guy who just logged on is going to walk right past you and potentially stop to RP. No one is going to an inn to RP because no one else is going to wander in

It's a good idea, actually. At least if you can set a timer on it as well, to prevent abuse.
1 Ale for every 4'th minute. Costs 200 gp, gives 200 xp. The xp is only given when drinking the Ale inside an Inn.

Yeah but if you did use an inn, and you made a big enough deal out of it, maybe people would wander in. And you know, it doesn't take that long to pop into the inn to see if anyone's there.
I was actually thinking there ought to be a waiter job. You know, so that patrons don't have to keep trailing back and forward to Griff for drinks.

Back in 2005 and for quite a while after the Nomad was the place to be, storys where slung around by bards, friends and enemys where made, adventurers found there partys and quests to go with them (sometimes through dm's other times through talk of adventure and wanting to have a look for themselves) unfortanatly that dropped of and people just started standing around the square.
I still randomly port into the Nomad and other Inns on the server in the hope i find such things rekindled, sometimes i find some good rp going on but sadly most of the time they are empty.
Bring back the adventurers spend most of there time in taverns /Inns when not adventuring rather than standing around in streets with what seems to be no real agenda.
The Nomads return was IMO ment to be just that, but it never realy took off again after the horde events that destroyed it in the first place.
Well, let's say that I don't mind to place the basic portal in the Inn. I doubt a lot of people running through it to get to their XP asap is going to add a lot to the atmosphere, though.

Yeah.. the old Nomad.. used to be quite popular, with the little stage- room off to the side with the cushions all around the edge.. I went in there a lot.. actually, lately I don't see too many people in Cordor at all even, mostly out in the forest.
But I miss how the nomad used to be, I'd love to see it like that again.. people going there post adventuring or whatever. I don't think the portal would do it though. Something like the trainers, mini-quests, xp, whatever, is more likely to do it.
A security clampdown following the assassination of a public figure could prevent people loitering in the open.
I like I like.
I agree!
Collin Reyes, Assassinated by a Seagull. Security goes way up.
Adventurers remain in Cordor square.
XP for sitting in an inn? Why is an inn so much more valid for roleplay than anywhere else that it gives experience for it? Plenty of characters have plenty of reasons not to go in booze halls and conduct their just as good RP elsewhere in the module. Why should a druid, for example, have to go chug beer in an inn to get XP? They should get XP for doing xyz and then these people should....
etc.

Doesn't answer why drinking in an inn gets you XP though. Maybe the PC's not a boozer. Maybe they're a druid and dislike being in towns. Maybe they're claustropbic or hell I dunno. There's a billion and a half reasons to not loiter in an inn all day. Why should you get XP for doing thtat one particular IC facet and not everything else? For instance, I don't see Darthion much sitting in an inn drinking. Does that make his RP qualitatively worse than someone who's sitting in an inn drinking every 5 minutes to get XP?

We're bringing up suggestions that -could- get people to start frequenting Inns more often, rather than loiter passively in a town square.
Why should they be in Inns?
Because IMO it's a big deal of the D&D RP we often see in PnP, and it's often a very nice deal as well.
It's a sensible spot to gather, socialize and make contacts... for adventure.
The intention isn't to have adventurers spend all their day in the Inn (the social monkeys who kiss and pick flowers might though)... but for adventurers to be adventurers between their adventuring in a more sensible location than what we're currently seeing.
I think its more lore accurate that adventurers would spend their time in inns rather than standing in the street.
* They are cashed up and have lots of money to spend. Why wouldn't they be eating and drinking well while theyre in town?
* They run around for days and nights on end and when they get to town they would want to sit down somewhere warm and comfortable... not put on their bikini and go stand in the rain.
*As already mentioned its the traditional hub of travellers and adventurers in the fantasy setting. The inns were placed there as an homage to that tradition, and people should use them for that reason.
Sure these are decisions for players to make themselves, but I think Mago is right that they make more sense from a lore point of view.
But I don't think awarding exp for being in inns will work. You could still get exp and gold faster by hunting. I think its just something people need to be aware of and try to work into their RP.

Not to mention it doesn't rain in an in every five minutes.
Player characters also have access to an abundant number of magical items that make day to day weather meaningless.

They're not eating all the time.

"should". "In your opinion." You're free to use them, just like you're free to hang out in, well, any area of the module. People have hung out in front of that temple since the days when the entire module was a straight shot run from Cordor to Bendir and that was it. This is "tradition", people, not words in a book thta say "Adventurers like inns."

"I think."
You RP where your PC likes to hang out asnd I'll RP mine.

I'm still pretty fond of the idea of NPC's randomly approaching PC's and either just making smalltalk, some info about Amia and it's current news, or one of those "Gossip" Quests.
This would encourage people to gather ICly where NPC's gather. Again, the XP given from any other these interactions, including the little quests should be very minimal. It should not be a way to level up just while your character is in town. It's something that'd add immensely to the server's immersion.
If I knew how to script worth a damn, I'd volunteer to write them all myself. But alas, computers will never understand me fluently. I have, however, written down a good number of scenarios for the "gossip" quests, as well as some random "personalities" with branched convo scripts. I can do convo scripts, actually, but spawning, things-like-that...nuuu.
Add some stat, skill, etc rolls, and we're in business.

If there's one thing that giving an OOC reward does not do, it's give immersion.

So you're saying the idea is moot unless we don't give anything? Why bother giving XP for any quest then, if it's only killing that justifies XP.
Anyway, I mean minimal to the point where you'd get more XP from grinding gobos at lv 30 for 5 min for a quest that might take 5-10 min. Like 10 xp or something. But if others see that as abusable, so be it, even if the interactions gave nothing, I'd still want to see random/converstation/quests implimented.

Random NPCs walknig up and force-starting conversations with PCs to give them quests they may or may not want sounds like a wonderful way to break RP already happening, tbh.
