OOC, I can virtually guarantee he'd wipe the floor with me. No ooc mechanic is going to change that I as a player must make that choice. Great to see this written out so clearly. I totally second these thoughts.

Something tells me none of the proposed solutions (scripting fixes) would have changed anything to the OP.
This looks more about either (for example) :
1- a specific character not feeling intimidated / being VERY optimistic on probability of being raised again and again / being masochist / trying to bluff Darthion
2- a specific player metagaming the OOC raise (bad)

In case 1- above, character does not fear death.
In case 2-, player doesn't fear death.

Tweaking heal pots, raise scrolls, having dead bodies carried to a temple won't cure any of this.

While I agree a timer on heal potions (if implemented after considering balance issues) would definitely help RP and immersion, I think the removal of raise scrolls could be detrimental.
Nothing worse than having a hunting party camp on the spot, one player metagaming, logging off and back on with a cleric etc...

*thinks* Don't remove raise scrolls... unless the "pray your diety" convo in rest menu can be expanded to include 'raise a party member' (once a day !)

That's more or less exactly what I said a few pages ago. I get the impression that you and I and the few others who have been pointing this out are being completely ignored in favor of mechanics arguments....

In reply to the OP, perhaps there needs to be a better intimidation tactic? Think it out, think it through or have something more creative, far-reaching than "I'm going to kill/beat you up to bits and bits".

Being told that a contingent of 6 beings that specialize in fire spells is going to wipe out a place? Worrisome.

Meeting a dragon whose very breath will wipe out all life in an area? Worrisome.

Creatures summoned that can utterly transform the landscape of an area from underground to the surface? Worrisome.

Cadre of stealthed spies that can neither be seen nor their actions followed from behind the curtains/rocks/cliffs? Worrisome.

Big group of loud, boisterous folks proclaiming they'll hurt you worse than the IG day long fight with a monster that left your PC with jelly limbs of exhaustion? Not as much no. Also it may be less of OOC awareness than quite possibly the PCs in question have been through something greater than anyone has the means to deliver on.

Example:

"I'm going to torment you for days or threaten you with physical harm of some various kind."
"...as opposed to being tortured nonstop day and night for more than five years by a master in the craft before being released? Let's try that again shall we?"

Conclusion:

Both sides may be badder than a Hell's Angel riding into Valhalla on a bike that spits out more arse kickings by the mile than all the death matches in history, but it may still depend what is deemed acceptable RP to the person playing their PC.

Anything else is an attempt to tell others how to RP their characters and the last I'd checked, that was hugely frowned upon.

As long as it's not against the rules and a majority of those involved have fun then it's RP. It may not be the RP that some would prefer but RP isn't cookie cutter so you're going to get various kinds and have to deal with it. This isn't just for the wrongfully dubbed 'tea set' crowd needing to deal with the 'brawlers'.

It's also the Brawlers that must realize the tea sets exist and just as valid a form of RP as their own. Sadly this seems to be something the admin staff must accept as well. Because if it's not accepted, those people who feel their own brand of just as involved/involving RP which they present with great fervor or dedication is being ignored, they'll do what so many seem to.

Leave for a server where it is either equally appreciated or at least recognized as still being valid RP. If the first thought upon reading this is 'well they should RP more like *this* which is what I like!' then congrats. You want someone else to take a character concept that they created, they love and enjoy and potentially alter it radically to please you.

:? Since I'm pretty sure most of us have wished something similar along those lines, it's just something to perhaps be mindful of if nothing else.

Laziness or not, I wouldn't do it myself, either. Add to that that some replies I simply don't read. I often skip yours, Yurell, unless I see they have some length, 'cause otherwise it'll usually just be pointing out the obvious or adding a useless anecdote. No offense meant, that's just how I see it. I'll generally skip everything Colanah writes because of the constant, annoying colors.

As for 10 page discussions about death in online gaming, I've only read over 99% of the posts here, because I've followed the debate from the beginning. There's no way in hell I would've read it all if I came in and saw it now for the first time.

Truly? The color variation was used to actually aid in breaking down what is typically a large wall of text so that it visually was segmented for the reader. Most that see a large wall of white will skim or skip it since they would unconsciously see it as 'an ongoing page of words'.

Going from color to color though makes it feel smaller so easier to keep your place as you read. Such as colleges/businesses that use colored tabs in folders/reports/etc to separate the chapters of whatever material they present to a reader. It may still be 1,000+ pages of text but psychologically it's supposed to feel 'smaller/bite-sized'.

Granted...I could lose the Rainbow Brite and just make it alternating colors but I draw alot so my inner artist might foam at the mouth if it wasn't 'pretty'. *imp grin*

Ainjyll...the mention of "Man that rocks harder than a year of death metal!!!" to highlight the awesomeness of something is so far, my personal fave of catch phrases.

The topic is hard to read and not because of colours used. It's because there's at least three main topics. Now that may work great if you can see all five hundred replies in nested format, but fifty replies at a time in flat format?

I suggested summarising this and starting new topic(s) and nobody could be arsed.

If you want things to make sense I suggest you think on that again, and hold off on posting until someone can actually be bothered to do some work around here.

In future if you want to just pile replies upon replies, use a format which supports it. Like Twitter.

I'm looking for solutions that try to give death impact without being ignored in RP after they're implemented, or achieving this impact by being lengthy, repetitive, annoying.

1) If you let NPC priests raise the dead by writing down the name of the guy, for example, it changes nothing at all. Instead of buying scrolls at the temple, a surviving party member goes there to rez everyone by using the priest.

2) If you make rezzes more expensive, or add a component, it changes nothing at all. People have money.

3) If you prohibit dead people from coming back to life for X amount of time, it changes something. But the message is effectively "you're dead, so log off. We prohibit you to RP for X amount of time".

4) Fugue planes and such are not random, therefore they become a one-time surprise and then a hundred times repetition. It may give death impact, but it generates a lot of annoyance.

Removing the ability for every Joe Schmoe to raise people from the dead is the most sensible and direct solution. It's clear as day to me. Death has no meaning because every single character is able to bring people back to life. Not saying that some small death penalty wouldn't be nice, but there is your culprit right there.

Death always was, is, and will be ignored in RP. That is why we have this thread. That is the whole point of this discussion. So because people Ignore it IC, we gotta make it as reasonably bad as possible OOC, because that is the only way people will do what they theyre supposed to.

Who said anything about writting out a name? Thats right, not me. I said carry their sorry butt to the temple while the player waits in the fugue. "Surviving party member runs to the temple and writes out the names of dead ones to raise them" Are you kidding me? No. He would be dragging a bunch of actual corpses with dead peoples names on them while the players of those corpses wait at fugue. And yeah.. he wouldnt be running. He would be barely moving at all since those corpses would weigh 500 lbs.

Every 'Joe Schmoe'? I trust that the developers making the NPC priests in temples would not name them 'Joe Schmoe'. And that is what I said.. "cleric NPCs at temples, and player clerics" not every regular Joe.

"Death looses meaning because every single character can raise dead" You realise youre quoting me.. but not really.. youre actually saying the opposite of what Im saying and using it as a quote

Annoying? The more annoying the better.

Ah so, we have total proof.

Hypothetical Situation.

Darthion; Tremble mortal! I am Darthion Ilyss, Imperceptor of Bane, Dark Lord of Tuesdays and General All Around BADASS!!!
Me; Then how come I've never heard of you?
Darthion; er.
Me; Indeed. I could call myself the King of Aghartha, but I'm not, am I? Sure you might be, but it's news to me. Have you considered applying for a visa to Aghartha by the way?

Basically. Nobody. Ever. Talks. About. Anyone. But. Themselves.
and thus, nobody has an IC rep,
and thus, nobody cares that you're the Dark Dhoom of the World.

Sorry Jim. You're dead but not as we know it.

Sigh.

And you wonder why I call people like Numbers assholes?

This topic isn't about Darthion, to begin with, or his IC reputation. Try re-reading the first post, and you'll come to understand that I was talking about this as a broader issue, non-specific to Darthion.

Secondly, I don't see why I should be forced to try and defend my character and RP here. What did I do to justify a public hearing of how well I might or might not have RP'ed my character?

Thirdly, Cori... Darthion, and your evocation-focused Sorcerer, whatever the character's name was... she and Darth hunted from level 7 to 16.

Also, Numbers, are you still playing? Or are you just stuck entirely in the UD?

Try travelling to any of the following places: Grove, Elistraeen Shrine, Bendir Dale, Wiltun, Khem, Kohlingen.

From what I've seen, and heard, Darthion tends to be discussed somewhat frequently in those areas... or used to be, at least.

I actually get a LOT of positive IC responses to Darthion, of fear and intimidation. I actually get a LOT of random and new characters, who know who Darthion is, walks up to him and introduces themselves.

All of you who are trying to get a cheap shot at me as a player, for whatever reason, by trying to piss on the RP effort I've made with Darthion, can just go fuck yourself.

Because you're all haters, and do nothing to contribute to this topic.

My young-girl sorceress from 2005? Crystal? Are you sure? I guess it's possible, though I genuinely do not recall ever hunting with you, honestly. That said, she must not have heard much of your bad reputation IC either, else she wouldn't likely have hunted with you.

I hope my post though has not come across as a hater type post. Quite the opposite. Heck one of my current 2 characters has been somewhat looking for you in game.

I used Darthion as my example not to target you, but rather, because the only person who has, to me, as much of a reputation as Darthion, is *perhaps* Sharina. But Darthion is still the best example. I'm just saying, that I won't react with intimidation or fear with my characters based on ooc knowledge, which is really all I have to go on. But I also am not the type to walk up and badmouth anyone. None of my characters is quite so petty.

Seriously Numbers?

G.T.F.O.

--o--

To the OP.

I know there is the trend of people where "death is nothing! aahhaa!" and I've seen it since day 1 of my playing here on Amia for the last year and half.

Of course, I can say right now that my PC made a lot of effort to be less scared of death and consiquence, by RP, even if I cannot share all of what it is. It is there, and he still fears death but in a different perspective. Every time Weston goes down for the count, he's praying to Salandra in graces She let him stand up again. It just doesn't happen all too often becuase he generally avoids being put face-down.

PvP? I don't PvP as much, admittedly. But recently I nearly was in a duel. Weston doesn't view those the same as being ambushed out in the wilds or challenged outside of city limits. When it's a PvP duel in an area or set zone for it, relatively near civilization, he believes he's far safer as nothing could /really/ happen to his body. Being killed isn't as scary.

Ambush him out in the wilds? Pop up behind him? Well, he might not jump as high anymore, but he is still more likely to run away than die. I've had such encounters where I GS'ed, set hostile, sent a tell it was becuase my character was running like a chicken, and promptly ran off.

I've also had an encounter where Weston watched his chest be cut open, numb to the pain via adrenaline and anger. Had his heart enchanted by a Flame Weapon spell (how is that for heartburn) and sealed up again so it'd keep killing him on the inside. He didn't even flinch, but then again, he was determined not to.

Currently I happen to know of RP where death isn't a feared factor, even though it is high an liable to the other PC. And so Weston, for them, is scared of the possibility and had to try and talk this person down from a rather suicidal sounding plan. Even if a PC themselves are not worried about Death, your own PC can be and openly voice it.

The more effort you'll make to see significance, the more likely you'll see others do it too.

As for death's consiquence in PvP? Being intimidated by death? If its a big PvP-character, they're probably into "live and die by the sword". After all, a lot of cultures do place value on a hero who dies in battle instead of the coward who dies of age. Death wasn't taught to be feared on the battlefield, but to be an honor! (Although, they stay more dead than Amia's people).

Quote:
"I could care less, doesn't matter if you're the most powerful and intimidating character on Amia, you can't do anything to me anyway" I see it as the equivalent of ignoring RP.

When you get those replies. Just try to remind them "raise dead won't re-attach that finger" (provided they let you lop it off). Or ask to drag the body around and hide it away. Heck, if they like the PvP scene, I wager you could be allowed to drag the corpse off somewhere, OOC raise for ease of typing (the death screen is annoying), and RP guarding the corpse in the frozen peaks of Gulh while you wait to see if a wolf will come eat it.

If you get that kind of reply, I wager you either have:

1) A player who will go alone with further RP and you can try to, yourself, prompt that death has a few more downsides than sitting around dead for an IC hour.

or

2) They don't like PvP as much in the first place, maybe they felt obligated to fight fair for RP, but really don't want to deal with it. In such case, maybe it's just learning a better worded reply so it's not so affronting (unless really appropriate as is a few cases).

I do not think it is Ignoring RP. I think it's the clash of the fact we all have different standards and comforts to playing. Overall, Amia is broadly united as people who like casual RP. And that just means more variance to each of us on our RP tastes.

I'm not going to say "oh, well, find another server then!" but I will say, there are other servers. And they are like Amia, they have people who play there because "they like causual RP" or "they like PvP matches" or "they like making Naruto DnD".

And as for Weston's case, it's taken a long time for him to realize it would be best if he never has to meet Darthion. Although doesn't know of ever meeting him yet. He didn't know untill the War on Benwhick Hollow; aftermath, that Darhtion is accredited with once assualthing Salandra's Church (true or not, I don't know). I had to find out IC because I wasn't around when it happened.

That's just the Reptuational talk, though. Everyone has some Reputation, but not across the map. Some more than others.

Fun Fact: Weston doesn't know what Tarkuul is. He doesn't seem it important to ask because nobody talks about it anyways. How's that for IC reptuations?

^_^

P.S. Sorry for possibly repeating globs of other peoples statements over the last 10 pages.

Right. Back on topic. Mago doesn't want to put the fear of Darthion into our souls, he wants to put the fear of DEATH back into the game.

And not for our toons. Plenty of our characters have no reason to fear death. You think my Tempuran is gonna run scared cause he's probably gonna die? No, but -I- might think twice about his rp if it's not so easy to get the hell back up.

The issue of this topic is simply that. How do we put this fear of death back into our rp. Let me stress again: this does NOT mean our characters will fear death. Many players rp their toons being so enormously badass and experienced that a little thing like a trip to the fugue plane wouldn't frighten them.

But the idea that you're just going to get back up anyway is an idiotic reason to simply jump into pvp or not rp the fight at all.

Mago is piked off cause this easy-raise system has made an IC impression, on all the rp in this server. My tempuran wouldn't run from a lethal fight, but he's not gonna be all jolly about it either.

CAUSE HE'S GONNA FREAKIN DIE.

The cause of this topic is to resolve that issue, or at least remind the playerbase that their characters are NOT immortal, and that the concept of death should be taken more seriously than a mere hindrance in their lunch plans.

And not for our toons. Plenty of our characters have no reason to fear death. You think my Tempuran is gonna run scared cause he's probably gonna die? No, but -I- might think twice about his rp if it's not so easy to get the hell back up.

I think that's laziness myself ... if you want to give your opinion, at least read that provided by others.

Personally I find your colours make it easier to read, but maybe that's just me.

While I understand Mago's point and largely agree with it, it's also largely wishful thinking. Not that I don't wish that people would regard combat as being a good bit more lethal, myself. After all, our characters aren't waving Nerf bats and using Nerf guns to represent flinging arrows and hideously destructive and insidious spells at each other. They're chopping with bits of wickedly sharp metal with extreme expertise (Weapon Masters), launching magically-enhanced equivalents to a modern day .50 machine gun's rounds (That's you, Arcane Archers!), and setting off very small tactical nuclear weapons in the form of highly-advanced 9th and 10th 'circle' magics (See: Hellball and other spells). Nothing to sneeze at, when I think about it.

As an aside, Mago may or may not have overheard it while my wizard, Wesley Fletcher, was trading quips with him. Wes was standing near Eary and Ramika, and murmured something along the lines of:

"By the way, if he decides to kill me, my sister gets my stuff."

He was pretty much experimentally prodding a tiger with a stick, just to see what would happen. But, he also acknowledged the suicidal nature of such an action.

Just my two copper.

Edit: Not to be an anus, Scimiter, but could you switch to light blue for your posts? Pure Blue on a black background can put a bit of a strain on some folks' eyes due to the contrast, and makes it hard (for me, at least) to read.

I've personally stated in the past that my experience with NWN on prior servers was harsh XP penalties and full looting on the ground (both PvE and PvP, DMs occasionally even made NPCs pick up your weapons and use them).

I'm well aware that will never happen on this server, nor would I want it to (albeit it made people -extremely- scared of death).

I -would- like to see a little more punishment for death. As it stands, only when you're levelling does death have any meaning really because you can lose some XP per respawn, at ECL 30 you lose 40k gold a respawn, and that's it.

Perhaps throw in something along the lines of a 5% arcane failure upon getting back up (whether a raise or a respawn), and 5% miss chance (akin to blind but only 5% if possible) for a half hour or so.

I realise that wouldn't affect pet classes too much, but it's a start.. I'd personally suggest 20% instead of 5%, but that's harsh to some people.

Harsh isn't bad, though. As much as I do enjoy the social roleplay I partake in, the Forgotten Realms, or DnD in general, isn't supposed to be a riskless game about chatting with your fellow epic "adventurers." It's true that Amia should be fun to play for everyone, but putting a harsher punishment on death doesn't make it less fun for anyone, unless the penalties are made absolutely mad. Like Permadeath in regular PvM/PvP.

A 20% Spell Failure/Miss Chance wouldn't be too harsh at all, in my oppinion, I'd even add other things to it. Like -2 to all abilities, -X universal saves, -X AB/AC, etc. Perhaps make it so that a cleric casting Greater Restoration can take those penalties away, but -only- clerics (druids as well, I guess?), so scrolls and those fountain thingies won't be useful at all.

I wonder how many people's suggestions I repeated in that right there. Here's a disclaimer for 'em: I agree with what you've said, if you said something like what I just did. I'm too freakin' tired to remember what I've read. <.<

I like the ideas of making a harsher xp penalty and things like that when dying. I especially like the idea of npcs picking up your weapon and attempting to use them when there's a DM around. >;3

I had an idea similar to this a few pages back and I like the concept. I do think that is should be staggered according to CL. A -2 AB/AC can mean the difference between continuing on and sitting in Corder or wherever for a bit, but a -2 AB/AC to a maxed out epic is nothing at all.

True enough. And I don't see anything wrong with being stopped from leveling for half an hour or more to RP instead, because of death from hunting or PvP. Hell, if I died and woke up again, no matter how fierce a warrior I was, I'm guessing I might want to sit down a bit and get my tactics straight.

We could make it scale every level, starting from level ten or so?

All this makes borderline griefing a more serious problem. Right now, you don't really have to worry about it. I am not necessarily opposed to some mechanical consequence of death, but 1) it makes griefing a bigger problem and will cause more arguments, and 2) it is not likely to have great impact on IC behaviour.

It might make people fear death more. That does not mean the fear will be reflected IC. It will more likely mean OOC preparations and OOC-motivated avoidance of risk (such as referring to PvP rules to avoid conflict). Might be nice and all, what you suggest here, but it will not make people RP better. No rules change or new system we've introduced has achieved that notably, yet.

/agree

Go sit in the corner for 30 mins and think about why you died in PvP won't help anything

All I can say? Blatantly false assumption to be making. My character only knows, or until recently only knew, a number of people based primarily off their reputations, both NPCs and PCs. Primary examples being:

Darthion
Yaston
General Dorne
Vaylek (Until Recently)
Renais Whiteheart
Amontep
Godo (Until Recently)
The Entire Eternal Order
Sir Ardent Hollows
Katsumi
Greywatch
Zack Orion

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Granted maybe I have a bit of an advantage because I'm a city guard so I literally am reading aspects of their reputation in the forms of civilian complaints, commendations, orders from superiors, and criminal records, but the point still stands a lot of people do have reputations. Hell apparently my character has a bad reputation with some people in the city he works in, though he isn't aware of that. Point is reputations do exist for both battle skill and social prowess but you have to learn to listen and look for the evidence. It isn't always blatant statements of "OMG HE IS THE BADASSNESS" For example Tae's relative knowledge of how dangerous Darthion is comes largely from orders he received that he was supposed to avoid provoking or confronting that particular banite by himself.

Oh and I think its cute that even if you have been raised by some divine intervention of some kind or another fifty times, that anyone would be so arrogant as to assume they can understand the motivations and thoughts of a diety enough to assume they will be raised the fifty-first time. There's a reason some characters out there are careful about the fights they pick.

Edit: Yes I'm cranky about the topic in the OP, and I know most of what i just said is not on topic, but the above assumption made me cranky enough to comment. Apologies for anyone I annoyed by being off topic.

This could work and it wouldn't be any use as a griefing tool, IF everyone involved has to set some kind of widget to ON first.

Then, if you're all wanting to have real repercussions for dying, you can have them. If the setting for Person A and Person B don't agree however, then no additional penalty will be applied to either in the event one or the other wins the fight.

However I would suggest also that penalties fit the character. So apply caster penalties based on number of caster levels, and apply AB penalties based on how much base AB the character has. And penalise a character's best specific save )Fort, Reflex, Will) depending on how good it is. AC penalties are pretty much bad news for anyone, so as above they can just scale according to level.

Unfortunately the reason I suggested a miss chance % over a direct AB loss is because the character I play really would -not- get affected by an AB loss in the slightest, it'd take a ~10 AB loss to even kick him down to regular ECL 30 Fighter standards.

Yes it's possible that these temporary detriments could be seen as a "griefing tool" but it'll make people back down from PvP a bit more than they currently do, and certainly not sprint back to the scene of the fight screaming "lol u can't kill me! I iz immoirtalz!" to have another attempt at the fight.

On a tangent..

The Silent Whisper wrote:

Heh, it's not as fun as it sounds, the items were far harder to get and the XP hits were severe (the XP loss penetrated through up to 2 levels. It'd take 110% of the XP required for your current level, so if you -only- just hit level 18, you're going back down to 16 when you respawn). But to my Sorc's delight, he had a +8 Charisma neck with Mind Spell Immunity (among other goodies).

Said character (Tyraeon was his name :() was perma-killed two years after his creation (and I was fine with allowing it) due to high treason and brutal crimes against humanity. (forcing someone to swallow a bead of a delayed fireball, anyone?)

There were -very- few raise scrolls, I mean these things were the equivalent of +5 loot bin stuff on Amia and the highest level on the server -ever- was 24, I only reached 22.. So if you died, you better bloody hope someone is with you, or finds you, and -then- they have to go find a willing Cleric etc to come raise you (which made playing Evil characters not so easy, people didn't want to raise you [hell I wouldn't have raised myself even, Tyraeon killed a handful of people that raised him, and sacked their bodies] and you were getting hunted alot by Good players. :P)

Here's maybe a suggestion...in addition to whatever xp and gold penalty there is (or, to be open-minded, may be added in the future).

Rez-sickness. This would apply to both literal raising, and respawning. For a certain duration, have an unchangeable negative impact to stats, skills, resists, or combinations thereof. And/or set it up that consecutive deaths exacerbate the problem, i.e. if you die under the effects of res sickness you come back with a worse case of it. Of course this would be on some kind of timer. And I would suggest that being raised by a person should have less sickness (and/or a shorter duration of said sickness) than respawning, but that's because I'm a jerk who sometimes likes finding potentially painful incentives to encourage people to hunt in groups. Was just an idea, and a generally vague one at that because it only just occurred to me and I'm too busy to flush it out right now but didn't want to forget it.

Ah yeah forgot about that also, never much thought about it as my prior server you had to make a request to play any PRC and have a backstory to follow it. Always thought that was a little over the top, but eh, people couldn't powerbuild because levelling was brutal. :P

I just generally never suggest the level removal due to xp loss because I prefer to avoid mobs with torches and pitchforks, even if they are only digital mobs.
