I was thinking of doing this with one my characters (well, Ukre) but before I try I'm wondering if there's actually players interested in this idea and DMs who will agree with it.
Basically, instead of learning the special monk techniques from random teachers all over Amia, I'm thinking PCs would instead teach them out of the Lemur Monastery, just like the Shadowdancer Academy PCs teach other PCs the special Amia shadowdancer skills out of Shadowscape.
Training at the monastery seems to be a big part of every monk PC's background I meet, but there's never any other PCs involved in it really, we all just assume Master Tsn or whomever took the time to teach us all.
Basically I'm thinking there could be a some structure to it, to represent a monk learning mastery of the martial arts, but simple enough to not be a hassle like:
Novice, White Belt; min. 1 monk level, demonstrate stunning fist and improved unarmed striking, defeat or draw another novice.
-Adept, Red Belt; min. 10 monk levels, demonstrate freeze the lifeblood and ki strike, defeat or draw another adept.
-Master, Black Belt; min. 20 monk levels, demonstrate mind immunity and damage resistance, defeat or draw another master.
-Novices train and spar with other novices, but do not mentor or discpline nor approve or test new ranks. (Do not teach any special monk techniques.)
-Adepts train and spar with adepts, mentor or discipline novices, and approve and test new adepts. (Teach pain touch, axiomatic strike, and eagle claw.)
-Masters train and spar with masters, mentor and discipline adepts, and approve and test new masters. (Teach freeze lifeblood, weakening touch, and ki shout.)
So...if people with monk PCs actually like this idea let me know, and especially if DMs would be willing to rework things to do this. The master/disciple relationship, learning secret techniques, challenging others to matches to demonstrate mastery and all that crap really is a big part of the wu shu genre so it'd be great if it was implemented into Amia, rather than just running around to find an NPC to automatically grant them when you reach a level.

Sounds cool and I would support that. I wouldn't be involved in it with my monk though. My monk "wasn't taught" by the Masters around Amia who teach you the special skills. My Monk has pre-history where she was taught by masters elsewhere and currently travels around, learning from masters of the Kelemvorite faith, mostly. So, because of that and because of the way she is, she would only teach fellow Kelemvorites, Jergalites and Undead hunters. No one else. She wouldn't care to learn from a large percentage of PC monks from Amia because, from what she's seen, a lot of them don't share her main ideals that she lives to fight for. There aren't very many Kelemvorite or Jeralite monks running around, after all.

Burningoutbright, me, Cobbit and Tyger Lily would sometimes spend time there with our PCs, some time ago.
But as always happens, other things pick people's interest and they start something new and I also found more enjoyment with other PCs, kind of stopping to play Daos.
Daos only has 4 levels (max will be 6) of Monk and I always RPed him as living there, his wife being the Monk with the highest skill he knew (she's Pure Monk, if memory serves). If my Request, currently under discussion, is approved, I will have two PCs that could spend time there.
I am about to come back to the server and your idea is very interesting. I support that. I just do not know for sure how much of my time I would dedicate, since I have two others PC that I like playing.
But, yes, you have my support.

If a monk PC ever took the time t teach the monk special techs to another monk, I'd watch and probably give them the tech. But no one's ever tried.
I guess now that I say this though it will be a trend?

Isn't a monk academy called a Monastery?

Yes, the OP is pretty much suggesting a PC run monastery. I can admire the idea.
I do suggest that while we may add it so PCs can teach the techniques, still leave them in the other NPC monasteries. It will be hard to have a "universal" PC run monastery. You can't expect every Banite monk to want to train around Tyyran ones, and vice versa. It should still be a little obligation to leave it so you can access the techniques as well even if your PC isn't liked by some PC.
Perhaps have a new set up widgets that can only be taught however. That might be interesting.

I'd definitely go for this idea. My monk would be more than happy to join and be a part of this.

I put the word academy in the title precisely to invoke the Shadowdancer Academy into people's minds on the subject. Not all shadowdancers are the same alignment, have the same deity, are the same race, etc. but they manage to work out a way to get shadowdancers taught in their techniques regardless.
Nothing about signing up for this would force you to take a disciple or master you didn't want, and I think leaving the techniques on the NPCs would really reduce how much use the monastery system gets, which is a bad idea, because (unpossessed) NPCs don't really generate RP.
So, what I'm really looking for is to see if it's 1) possible to give PCs the ability to grant techniques to other PCs who meet the pre-reqs and 2) if the DMs actually be willing to do so if this institution was set up. However, I don't think there needs to be a DM to watch, because you can already get them without needing a DM to watch.
To be clear, this isn't about making it easier in any way (actually i'd be harder this way) but trying to centralize the "martial arts"-style RP on the server.

love the idea, but i would say no to making it mandatory to attend your academy/monastery. That strikes me a little bit too much like forcing someone to rp a certain way, they have to join your academy to learn the monk techniques. There needs to be a way to accomodate someone who doesnt necessarily want to join your monastery.

Before retiring Renee Valgas, Burningoutbright would always be RPing that. She taught a couple of things to Tyger Lily and before I stopped playing Daos (for some reason I cannot remember now), she was starting to teach another PC.
Anyway, it was too long ago. Some... 2 years, I think? Maybe more.
*mumble* Where's BoB when I need her? *mumble*

Well, it wouldn't be mine, my PC would just be one of the many masters there available for instruction (he just plans on getting it going). It would be Master Tsn's I presume, and again, the shadowdancer academy is the same way. You either find a teacher or you don't learn to shadowjump (at least, that's how it was when I learned it).

Sounds great!
It would totally beef up the rp involved in finding these techniques.
I vote yes.
