A good wisdom score, and the fact that knowledge of his deity is something of, you know, his career. That, and his personal religious beliefs focus on the fact that Lathander is a young god (Amaunator's back, younger and fresher, yo!).

His knowledge of other things, such as, well, near enough everything, is pretty limited.

Knowing how old one's deity is, and that his portfolio does not include law, however, is hardly extreme cosmological knowledge, though. It's pretty basic for a ranking member of the faith. Or even a layman.

Angelic Cults:

Do they exist in FR, and is there any precedent? And I mean still good-aligned angels/celestials, not fallen ones like demonic/devilish cults which are know to exist in the Realms. I seem to recal a group that was "patroned" by one of the Hebdomad, but that was Greyhawk I think.

If there is no none precedent, would it be plausible that there are some secretive ones somewhere if not on Toril, perhaps on other planes? It would seem logical that someone a group of people might worship or call on angels rather than gods for the same reason people did IRL in ancient times, feeling that they were somehow easier accessed than deities.

I would say so, yes. Only, there aren't many obvious "angels" in the FR mythology, per se.

The Shards of Selûne probably have their cults, or small military orders using them as a totem.

Ilmater certainly has several saints, such as Dionysos and I think Sellars the Twice-Martyred. They are worshiped like minor gods. I do think most of the time it's only as part of polytheism, so that they don't ignore the saints' and angels' patron gods but worship them through these lesser beings. Well, it would make sense, at least.

I don't know of any definite source material on this (apart from the Ilmatari saints), but it seems likely. And wicked cool, either way!

Good outsiders generally dont have cults, as the reasons demons and devils have cults is to increase thier power, and grant spells to thier followers in exchange for worship. Celestials dont generally have that motivation, but it could be possible for a good Celestial to champion a group or a cause.

There's also Saint Elizabeth, to the Kelemvorites. She's treated like a demi-god by some. Hell, some Kellies treat her like more of a god than Jergal.

Salandra is unto an angelic cult in a way since she is simply a mortal who acquired demigod status.

There's also Saint Nebessa, Exarch under the Red Knight, in Kohlingen.

Does halruuan people live there? Luskan people? Chultan?

The Purple Dragon knight caught my intrest, and i wish to know more about the lore of the class.

Edit:: I found cormyr, but im still unsure what type of people live there. What Dieties are most often worshipped there, etc.
MAP: Cormyr is in the middle somewhere

Cormyrans live in Cormyr. Halruaans live in Halruaa. Luskans live in Luskan and Chultans live in the jungles of Chult. I guess that answers the question? I have heard Cormyr best described as "Forgotten Realm's France", in terms of medieval setting and general feel. Knights and jousting and chivalry and high noble families rule the area. The current leader is Regent... Steel something or other, with the real King being in his teenage years and assuming full rulership soon.

So no, no human regionals if you want to be from Comyr. You are a plain human from the dalelands with no fancy stat bonuses.

Dieties then? What type of gods do they most often worship? What is the common alignment? Are they chaotic, or do they strive for society and ...Generally lawfullness?

The Steel Regent Alusair Obarskyr, I believe. And the teenaged king-to-be is Azoun V I'm pretty sure.

LN -> LG, with those associated deities being worshipped the most. As always there are seedy underbellies.

You recon a Cormyrian -has- to be a human? Can it be a halfling, or an elf?

Edit:: What would be the natural Skincolour of a Cormyrian, you recon? It's a middle Faerunian country. And if we're talking the renessanse, i ...'think' they are slightly tanned? Maybe?

Doesn't HAVE to be a human, I was more saying "there's no regional subrace that properly reflects a cormyrian born human." They are typically caucasian, to my knowledge.

Cormyreans (Cormytes, in slang and in the king's official speeches!) are mostly Chondathan in ethnicity. There are also Tethyrians. That means they are smaller and more slender than Illuskans, who're the folk of the North and Northern Sword Coast. Chondathans have tawny skin, usually brown to black hair. It's not without exceptions, of course.

Cormyr is a goodly nation, very much the ideal monarchy. They are very proud of their homeland and history, thinking it the best place to live. They are slightly elitistic, but on the flipside more civilized than their neighbours, and a strong sense of community pervades the realm.

There's a history of some strife and rebellion with Arabel, who's declared independence every now and then and submitted to Cormyr again. Currently it's part of Cormyr. Suzail is the capital.

It is ruled by the Obarskyr family. The king died recently in battle against a dragon, and so her daughter Alusair rules as regent. She's war-like and well-liked, and will be in power until the child king Azoun comes of age. (He was born in 71, so that makes him 7 years old.) Three royal houses, original nobility with ties to the Obarskyr, serve the king closely. They're the "Silver" houses, I think Crownsilver, Huntsilver and something. There's a large feudal nobility as well, sometimes more corrupt than other times, but better than in most places. In addition the landed nobility, the king appoints a lord over every town, to protect and govern them. There's always intrigue and competition behind the scenes, but Cormyr is, on the surface and in common men's hearts, quite ideal. It's had some serious foreign trouble with Shade, lately.

Cormyr has several faiths, even the church of Malar is tolerated. In Suzail, there are major temples to Tymora and Deneir. In Arabel, there is one to Tymora. Lathander, Helm and Chauntea also have large temples in other towns. All in all, many gods are worshiped. Lliira, Milil, Selûne, Silvanus, Tempus, Tyr and Waukeen are mentioned, in addition to the above, in Players's Guide to Faerûn. (And I know there's a chapel of Oghma in Suzail, because that's where my PC is from.)

You can download Volo's Guide to Cormyr legally and for free, here:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

Why not get the Four From Cormyr adventure module too, for fun detail.

Okay question about my fey/elf. He is a chaotic evil bard. He worships everetheen or whatever his name is. I was reading on the wiki that this god is worshiped in the seelie court. Is he worshiped in the unseelie court as well?

Also I was reading tha his clerics don't rebuke undead, they just turn them. Is it reasonable to think that my bard though not particularly liking undead would still party with one if it serves his purposes? Oh yah he is a bard/bg if that would help in answering.

I'm not sure who you worship. There's no one even close to the name you said. Going with the assumption that the first letter is right, I'll assume you mean Eachthighern or Emmantiensien? Both of which are Chaotic Good, so if you're Chaotic Evil, you have yourself a nice little problem 'cause you wouldn't be able to get spells from them.

Also, the Seelie Court is and actual court of fey gods, the unseelie court is the Queen of Air and Darkness all by herself. She's the only member.

About hanging with undead? I kinda doubt they would be cool with it, being from the seelie court, but fey are weird, so who knows. I wouldn't know what to say here since I don't really know all that much about fey gods. I kinda think of the seelie court as having a looser but similar feel to the Seldarine, who by the way oppose undeath to the core (with exception of good undead).

EDIT: Oops, thought you said you were a cleric! So ignore everything I said, unless you plan to go cleric at any time. You can worship whoever the heck you want and do whatever the heck you want. Your faith doesn't have to restrict you. Your Blackguard powers come from some kind of evil outsider, not a god. That said, if you're worrying about "false believer" when your character dies, that's a whole other sack of marbles that I'd rather not touch. If that's what you're asking, the DM's are the only ones fit to answer that since they play the gods.

I sure wish the wiki was up. The whole seelie buisness was just background info of whom he spent time with. The god does support ce he is in the elven pantheon.(no wiki) but bards among other's worship him. If I could just remember his name... oh there are two gods in the elven pantheon that support ce one female and one male.

Pardon at work...

Fey's do not have god's. The closest things to Fey gods is the Queen of Darkness & Air, King Oberon and Queen Titania.

What you may be thinking of is the court members, only the three above are considered dieties in any respect in the fey courts, and even then not really.

Members of the Seelie court are as follows:
Caoimhin, Damh, Eachthighern, Emmantiensien, Fionnghuala, Nathair Sgiathach, Skerrit, Squelaiche, and Verenestra.

Some sources claim them to be dieties, but no offical source has ever confirmed them to be dieties in the slightest, only the three mentioned above have been even slightly confirmed. I believe the those mentioned as members of the court are Greyhawk gods, and only The Queen of Air & Darkness, King Oberon and Queen Titania are Faerun fey gods.

I see, the way you worded it, it made it seem like you were talking about a god from the Seelie Court.

The Seelie Court = Fey gods

The Seldarine = Elven gods

If the god you're talking about is in the Elven pantheon (the Seldarine), you might be talking about Erevan Ilesere? The god of mischief, change and rogues? Either way, you're not a cleric so you're fine to do anything. You can't "fall". But again, there still is "false believers" who would go to the wall when they die if they stray way off the path that their god has set. -But-, that's something the DM's call on. And probably something they wouldn't comment on for you, I imagine. Best to play out how your character would live, no matter that consequences of possible false faith in death. ;)

I would imagine the only reason they comment on things like that for divine casters is so that they don't metagame. Being a divine caster has stricter rules and you would know if you fell because your spells go bye bye. Gotta know when your spells have to go bye bye somehow.

There are beings who can rival gods in power, but they themselves are not gods.

The Slaadi Lords
The Demon Princes
The Archdevils (unless you count Asmodeus as a true diety)
The Primordials
The Court of Stars
Talisid and the Five Companions
The Celestial Hebdomad
The Archomentals
The Vestiges

Mind that a lot of those are splatbook and greyhawk specific and not always relevant to Forgotten Realms or Amia unless a DM specifically states that it is.

He's a god in 4th edition, so on Amia, he's still only an Archdevil and not a god. Unless a DM states otherwise.

He's an archdevil. He becmae a god by killing Azuth. Azuth is still alive in our timeline ergo Asmodeus is an Archdevil, not a Deity.

Also IMO he's a bad deity because he totally romps and impinges on Bane's portfolios...

If a Ranger or Druid dies... what happens to their companion? Maybe if they die on different ways, its happenings are different?

Druid or Ranger dies in battle?
Of sickness?
Of old age?

Does it just slink back into nature?
Does the pet maintain some of its heightened sentience?
Does the pet die?
Does it get sick?
Go evil?
Does the companion seek out and befriend another ranger/druid?
Stays a 'member' of the Grove?

Furthermore, I know on Amia we just resummon the companion.... Though I say (Khan is injured badly and scampers off) to make more sense of this situation. But tell me what does the Druid/Ranger do if their pet dies, can it die of old age while with druid? I mean elven druids then must go through 100's in their lifetime?

That's a very good question. One I don't know a for sure answer to and I doubt it's answered anywhere in any books. So... I'll make an educated guess and give you my opinion:

Considering that pretty much all companions are actual animals (the only case I've ever heard where this wasn't the case, was with everyone's "favorite" Drow.), that is, real animals from Toril, I would think they would just try to reintegrate into their natural habitat or mope around like sad pandas, probably. In other words, move on however they naturally would if they had a partner who died. I'd imagine it would probably only phase them for a short while. For wild animals, anyway. Domestic creatures, a lot of times, are conditioned to have pretty different mindsets from their wild counterparts when breed for hundreds of years (dogs to wolfs and domestic cats to lynx's, for example). But, there are exceptions to breeds, of course, who would act abnormally to a situation in opposition to their breed. Anyway, I'm rambling now. I would imagine they would simply be sent back to where they were if they were summoned and continue normal existence on Toril.

If it was an animal from a different plane, like Drizzt's companion, I would think they would simply remain/return to their plane and live on as they had there. So, kinda like a natural, they're sent back to where they were summoned from and they continue normal existence.

I've a guy that is a "Fallen" ranger. Little confusing on how it came about but anyway the question actually is on acceptable deities for a ranger.

There seems to be two sides to this that I'm getting. Some say that any deity can grant ranger spells while the other half say that it's limited to the nature deities.

Now first modifier I have to toss in is he's /not/ played as a ranger and his ranger levels come out of his backstory only. He doesn't live much a life as a ranger but makes use of the skills he learned as a young man.

That being said back to the question. Can he take any deity or is there a limited list that he's stuck with?

There's conflicting information in books. My call, and it's pretty commonly accepted, is that you can choose any deity. WotC can't make up their minds about rangers, and the option that any god will do accomodates most published lore. If you intend to use your spells, you do have to actively worship a god as a ranger, of course.

About the Animal Companions ... do we take the PnP Lore or the NWN Empirical about what they are? In PnP they're really loyal animals that are your friend, but in NWN they're clearly summons.

It was always my personal take that Ranger paralleled Paladin, just as Druid parallels Cleric.

As in Nature gods have Druids whom they grant full spells to protect/venerate nature and Rangers whom they grant a dab of spells with the intent they'll protect nature in more of a martial, physical way.

Just as the more "traditional" gods have Clerics whom they grant full spells to be the main spreaders of the god's dogma and paladins that get a dab of spells with the intent they'll spread dogma in a martial way.

This of course is just my take. Nature gods have clerics sometimes apparently, and on Amia, I've rarely seen anyone take Ranger seriously as dealing with nature. :? As well, I am told that Druids are "specialty priests" rather than something in their own right... which I find kinda meh, but I ain't that one with the books, nor did I write them.

@Yurell: I think although NWN shows you "summoning" the creature, it's still considered a "companion" and a natural creature that just stays by your side. Thus, why you can have a summon out and a companion. They just didn't want to write in a VFX that shows whatever animal you have running out of the nearest forrest when you "summon" it. The VFX it currently plays is mainly OoC, IMO, and most druids RP their companion as running to their side outside anyway and ignore the "summoning".

The VFX it currently plays is mainly OoC, IMO, and most druids RP their companion as running to their side outside anyway and ignore the "summoning".

Doesn't it disappear with Banishment and Dismissal, though? And it can be killed (if it's by dev crit there's no disputing the fact that it's dead) but can immediately be called again.

They do dissapear with Banishment sometimes, which is a common gripe for folk that know how it works in PnP. There's been talk to get that fixed in the past, I beleive, but I don't think anything ever came of it since they're considered really powerful and a weakness needed even't if it doesn't make much IC/PnP sense.

And I suppose it could be RPed that they are revived by the power of Nature upon death or something. That's never been really clear. But consider mages with familiars pretty much have to do the same thing. In PnP, if I'm not mistaken(likely so), if a familiar dies a mage has to wait a whole year and a day to take another one. It's not an infinently summonable creature, but rather just a creature bound magically. So however Druids and Rangers get their companions back after death is likely the same way mages get their familiars back after they die, in NWN at least. You're able to call and revive them by whatever way you can come up IC, until there's some official word on how it happens.

Edit: Bah, my slip up on the quote brackets.

If someone pulls Banishment on my hawk I play it like the bird was scared away and re-summoning simply it responding to the call to return to my guy's shoulder. Just to give a IC way of dealing with it

Dark Immolation:

Rangers are the militant clergy of nature gods, yes. But they don't have to be. There are certainly rangers of Bane and an entire order of Mystran rangers who get a boost to their ranger spellcasting ability via a Prestige Class. So it's quite evident that rangers don't have to follow just nature deities, but it's not 100% certain that the mentioned exceptions aren't the only ones. I see no reason to suppose they are, though. Be that as it may, Amia has never controlled the rangers' choice of patron deity in practice.

Nature deities often have many clerics in their service. It might even be that they're more common than druids. In 2e terms, druids are a priest kit, and they're part of the clergy as anyone, but that doesn't mean their role and duties aren't different. In Chauntea's church, the druids serve in the wilderness while clerics reign among established civilization. The druids call themselves the "True Clerics of Chauntea," and the relationship between the two groups is sometimes strained. 40% of the clergy are clerics, 50% are druids. (The remaining 10% is mystics, shamans, and monks.) This is according to F&A.

Rangers can follow any deity that accepts them, as Rangers is the most versitale class in the entire setting. They can be purely based around protecting nature, or purely based around an existance inside a city. Rangers can be in any terrain, and take on any role that is not restricted due to say, they need to cast arcane spells.

Much like the rogue, the Rangers learn special skills. What they do with theese skills are entirely up to them.

How would they normally behave?

A Paladin of Waukeen is not possible. Waukeen is a TN deity, and as such is not a candidate for Paladins to take as a deity (as per the one-step rule of Dungeons and Dragons).

As a neutral deity, however, Waukeen is capable of supporting Divine Champions. Her favored weapon is the Cloud of coins (a nunchaku). I would venture to guess that she would elevate the craftiest of merchants, whichever side of the law they operate on, but it would be the player's ultimate choice to determine how they would venerate Waukeen.

Any god can have divine champions. It's only because it's "champion of torm" and not divine champion on NWN that evils can't take the class. Just to clear that up.

Yes, but they are specific exceptions to the rule (or at least Sune is. Don't know about Selune).

Actually, if a paladin has to be LG, why can't a TN deity then have paladins as per the one-step rule?

Paladins have to LG, not just lawful. Though there are paladin variants such as the Holy Liberator (CG-only), they aren't in FR or NwN.

Edit: Oops, misread. See Yurell's post, as it's correct.

TN isn't one step. It's two ... diagonals don't count.

There are indeed exceptions to every rule!... very few in this case. Selune? I don't see anywhere that Selune is an exception. Is this a house rule?

This is indeed true, although I was pointing out that Waukeen can have DC's on NWN because she is a neutral goddess.

Sune is an exception, but Selune isn't. I think you might be getting mixed up with the fact that she has Monks who are of the Sun Soul order?

There have been several paladins of Selune on Amia and Arelith at vvarious points in time. Yes, I suppose it is a "house rule".

It is very shady whether Selûne is an intended canon exception.

Champions of Valor introduces the Order of the Crescent Moon in Impiltur. It is comprised of dwarves who worship Clangeddin Silverbeard and humans who worship Selûne. In the organization overview, it's not mentioned whether the members are paladins. However, on page 37 is the Paladin substitution levels of Crescent Moon Knight. "The unusual paladins of the Order of the Crescent Moon serve either Clangeddin Silverbeard or Selûne. [..] To take a Crescent Moon Knight paladin substitution level, a character must have Clangeddin or Selûne as his patron deity, be related to or a close friend of one of the founding families, and be about to take his 4th, 6th or 10th paladin level."

So yes, according to CoV, there are paladins of Selûne, even if they're all probably part of this order. I'm inclined to think it's a mistake on the authors' part, but you never know. It makes sense to be a paladin of the original goddess of light, though.

Fair enough. Paladins of Selune are a-okay then.

Aye, agreed. I always thought Selune would be better fit as a NG, personally, like Shar is NE (the original goddess of darkness). But meh. ::shrugs::

Better yet, Shar should simply be evil alone and Selune should be good alone. That would have been most fitting. Stupid WoTC, stupid TSR! ::shakes fist:: :P

As regards to Monks, a quick clarification.

Monks can follow any deity whatsoever, as can other classes which do not cast divine spells. A Lawful Good fighter, for instance, could feasibly attempt to follow Malar. Sure, Malar probably wouldn't listen, and he would probably end up faithless, but this is not certain, as he could theoretically follow the non-aligned aspects of the God, focussing in hunting, for example.

A better example would be from Gods which embody something other than their alignment, whose main focus is something other than their morals.

A chaotic wizard, for example, could follow the lawful Azuth's faith to the letter, pretty much. A barbarian warlord, being a chaotic rager, might still be able to follow the Red Knight, paying homage to her strategic aspects. The Red Knight herself, and her own lawful followers could very easily revere Tempus, a chaotic God too, revering his warrior aspects, his alignment not affecting their worship, as he is more concerned with battle than any particular set of morals or ethics.

When it comes to deities like Ilmater, though, whose focus is being good, or Cyric, whose focus is murder, being an utterly opposed alignment would be difficult, at least on one axis. A chaotic follower of the lawful good Ilmater is easily possible, but evil is very unlikely. The same goes for Cyric... a lawful follower is unlikely but possible, but good would be next to impossible.
