I don't see anything wrong with making a topic about that then why don't you? It'd be an interesting discussion.

Keep IC in Talk channel.

Try not to go overboard on OOC in Party, as it may be distracting to others in your party.

If you want to have an extended OOC conversation with someone, I'd recommend Tells or MSN.

Not having parties with 10+ members in them helps as well.

Not to mention it significantly reduces server lag.

One should limit the amount of OOC in the talk channel. Not all OOC there is bad, but it should be kept to a minimum IMO.

Personally, I think there shouldn't be -any- ooc in the talk channel. But that's me.

I know some OOC in Talk may be necessary, as long as it's kept short.

//brb
//back
//sorry
Etc.

I do want to smack some people who have to put "//lol" out there though.

When you've been killed, and someone asks for OOC permission to do something, do you seriously expect people to spend five minutes trying to figure out how to send a tell to the asker?

Click on their portrait? Use the player list? Type "/t 'Bla Bla name' 'Bla bla message' "

I consider it to be alright to use the talk channel for a quick // inquiry. But it's generally sensible to use other means when they're available.

1. You can't click the portrait when they're dead
2. Not everyone knows all the chat commands, and when someone has a long name it becomes difficult, especially when you add in unusual spacing, to keep the names different from a rebuild, and characters with accents, it will take you more than double the time it would to just type into talk.

In the case of a PvP death, the only thing you'll need to ask, is... // Can I please have an OOC raise?

That's it.

Good points Yurell. I think OOC should be kept to simple:

//yes
//no
//afk/brb
//back

etc.

Anything more than that should generally be kept to tells or MSN or something imo. Except during specific circumstances, like Yurell mentioned.

The problem of Party chat isn't that it distracts me. It's that it distracts the people engaged in it, increases the time they take to respond and makes them less attentive or initiative on IC matters.

There's no way to control it without outright banning it. But just saying: it should remain to an absolute minimum, because we're here to socialize through RP, not through OOC conversation. The latter is fine as long as it does not affect the former, but oftentimes it does. And that's when RP should take priority.

Just wanted to quote this for emphasis in the right place. The bold words are what my main concerns are.

This is one of those common sense things that noone seems to have. On a Role Play server one would expect to Role Play as much as possible.

But not everyone's perfect. I'm surely not.

Saying OOC chatting should be kept to a minimum and it being kept to a minimum are different aspects all together. You're better off finding the reasons WHY people chat OOCly and looking into ways of distracting them from it at a personal level. That puts responcibility on the players to step up their game, not solely on the DMs.

Outright banning it is just plain stupid, an unneccessary method.

Arelith /did/ actually shutdown the party channel and ban OOC in the talk channel. I see it as having good and bad effects. It does indeed allow the focus to be on the RP but at the same time because you can only talk to one person at a time in tells the more time that people spend focused on the OOC. It also, this is conjecture and personal view now, means that there's less community.

I've always been big on getting to know the people that I'm playing with OOC so I disagree with that statement:

Quote:

Course that's just me. Goes back to the good old PnP days. Sitting around the table with the gang and having as much fun OOC as IC. What's the point of something funny happening if you can't all laugh about it together? If I was just here to play a role then I'd play single player.

So my two cents is I agree that talk channel should be mostly IC but if the party chatter is getting to you then bail out of the party. As to people taking longer to reply IC I'm sorry but if someone is typing something in Tell or Party then that's what they are doing. The RP isn't going to fall apart cause they take a extra minute to emote a facepalm or say that your shoe is untied.

QFE

Though in tabletop games, it is easier to tell everyone to shut up when the chatter is getting too much and since they are all your buddies, no-one will take personally the request to shut up.

Most of the times that OOC chating happens in tabletop, though, it is because something happening in game is uninteresting or involving a single player at the moment, and the others, bored to death until their turn to act comes, chat among themselves.

If the Party Channel is a problem for you then close it down or move it to your combat log. Its that easy.

That only works untill someone tries to say something that IS important OOC in party chat while you're hunting and trying to RP. Its lost in combat spam or.. you just can't see it.

I believe the problem is not so much ~you~ being troubled by it. You can close your Party Channel and solve the problem.

However, the other player could remain with their Party Channel opened and he could still be distracted, making you wait a couple of minutes before they reply to your action.

EDIT: By the way, I am the kind of person that if I am in the middle of RP and the other player is taking forever to reply to my action, I open the chatlog to check when I entered my action and how much time have passed with the other player not responding.

I tend to send a Tell to get their attention just in case they are really distracted and also to make sure they are not AFK, and if that does not work, I emote something like *Walks Away* and then send another Tell saying "Send me a message when you are done chatting, so we can resume our RP".

Keeping IC seems more like an etiquette thing to me. Any sort of "musts" enter the game of chat, save obvious do-nots like excessive profanity, and the game starts to lose a personal element.

Players are not their characters. It's only fair that occasionally, players should be able to speak without characters speaking too.

That's said, it is usually obvious when OOC is being taken too far. In that case, all it takes is a simple "Hey, guys, can we keep it a bit more IC? Thanks" to get it back on track.

Communication is the answer to everything.

I witnessed that. And I witnessed the replies a player got to that: they would range from acknowledging it was being too much, to ask the other player to leave party if it was bothersome.

Sometimes the replies to that would be rude, though.

In my mind, OOC chatter should be kept to party and tells. Talk channel should be used strictly for IC purposes. The only exception to this is if for some reason you have to tell a bunch of people something and they aren't in your party. For example, after a PvP experience: "// Rez you guys in just a moment." would be a perfectly suitable use of OOC in the Talk channel.

I, personally, don't mind OOC chatter. I've got my party channel showing up in a dark orange color, so I can easily ignore things that pop up in that color if the need arises. The only time that I get annoyed is when I'm RP'ing with someone and I'm having to wait 2 or 3 minutes for a reply to an IC statement because they're too busy chatting away in Party channel. Basically, the IC experience should come first and the OOC chatter should come second.

Yus, that is what I meant with my post in reply to Chris. You said it better than me.

While you are responsible enough to ignore the chat in Party Channel, there will still be the risk that the other player is unable to do the same, thus "forcing" you to wait a long time until he ~remembers~ he was RPing with you previously to jumping in on that conversation about boobs, music or food.

If i don't get an answer from someone within 30 seconds, I start making prep to leave.

30 seconds later that prep is done and I go.

All the points posted here are easily prevented with disciplined player management on a personal level. You can't really complain about it.

Don't want party chat? Don't create a party if you don't have to be in one. Don't like waiting for people when they're talking in party chat? Remind them what kind of server it is and tell them to get back to work.

Because it annoys a minority doesn't mean it should be banned altogether. People just need to learn to be more blunt in how they handle others.

Only ever talk ooc in talk channel if effected by OOC things. Such as, server crashes. Everything locks up. Sudden death for no reason. Etc etc.

Otherwise it's party chat for me. I may have done a few three line //'s with people over a slip in what someone has said.

Putting it in the right side helps me sort out the stuff. I respond with brief messages with OOC stuff because honestly I didn't come here to talk about non game related things. The slower response time thing to me is kind of the biggest factor because it begins to kill the immersion....

....However, there are also benefits. It for one adds to a more friendly envrionment when used in a positive manner. It allows for comunication within factons to set up meetings. It allows me to say "sup sup" without me having to type it over and over again. I understand there are people on the other side of the computer and they might be cool. I mean, how can we call ourselves a communtiy of any sort if we don't know each other right? //Lol

Oh come on Mago ;)

I remember the Banite parties, so much OOC fun. Granted, it got tuned down as soon as RP popped up, but still.

Also how can we orget the Drow parties?

I think these are the only races/faiths that ever get more than ten people into the same group.

False. Hin parties get really big and protector parties get even bigger. I've been Lolthite Drow and I have a Eili Drow and even though those parties get pretty big, protector parties... holy Jesus on earth.... HUGE sometimes.

i personally love the drow party chat.. and I feel its one of the reasons the drow community was so strong for so long. All the members knew we really werent heartless bastards but in all actuality were nice people playing heartless bastards.

as for iron's problem with distraction.. I changed the color of my party chat so I could ignore it when need be.

Indeed, the sense of community in he drow party was great. It enabled one to relax and just play the game. When I didn't want to read party chat, I ignored the pretty purple or just shifted the chat to the other window. It also helped separate the OOC from the IC - they aren't picking on me, their character is picking on my character.

I remember the beginner days when I didn't know party chat could be placed on the right side. The horror.

Dunno how to change the color but to "move it over" just right click the chat window, disable party chat, right click the combat window, enable party chat.

Not having parties with 10+ members in them helps as well.

Not to mention it significantly reduces server lag.

Oh come on Mago ;)

I remember the Banite parties, so much OOC fun. Granted, it got tuned down as soon as RP popped up, but still.

Also how can we orget the Drow parties?

I think these are the only races/faiths that ever get more than ten people into the same group.

No way! Forest parties.

And I try and pay the most attention to rp and not party, if I'm taking a long time to reply I'm probably being distracted by something important In msn/tells/real life.. in which case I'll generally apologise and try and tell the person I have something distracting me/semi afk and give them an out if they'd rather go than wait.

I'll usually say or emote something brief (ICly) to let people know I'm back. I agree that the extended responses arent necessary (or could be sent in tell/party).

Oh, and dont forget

// no push

to avoid those IC glares when bumping people.

And I heard great jokes about the drow party a week ago talking about Corellon having to pay Lloth child support and such. *laughs* Just here for the IC social life? I think not

-Go to your NWN directory
-Open nwnplayer.ini in Notepad
-Add:
Quote:
[Chat Colors]
TalkColor=240,240,240
ShoutColor=255,239,80
WhisperColor=128,128,128
TellColor=32,255,32
ServerColor=176,176,176
PartyColor=255,102,255
DMColor=16,223,255

To the bottom, making sure to leave a space after everything else
-Change the above colours to whatever you like. The TalkColor is the default white, TellColor, Lime-green and PartyColor a pretty purple.

That drow chat was hilarious.

Me and the guys should have been smote (Smited?) for it. It was grand.
