We're cleaning up stuff on the forums to prepare for a smooth migration to phpBB3 or some other forum format when the server moves.

You should save on your own computer the stuff you don't want to lose. Especially if it's in General or Off Topic.

My aim is to save PC Story and DM Story in whole, all lore/rules from General and IC posts on the city forums and faction forums. Saving history of the island and characters has the highest priority.

I still recommend backups in case the transition isn't successful.

As Moderator of the Flaming Order aka War Knights.

I recently gone through a lot of clean up in our section and narrowed down, organized and such.

A suggestions:

* Perhaps Admin, might give the extra permission for faction Moderators to save/delete things down to help the move along?
* Moderators of factions, consolation of things down to vital information and saves.

When is this happening? And will there be a way in the new one to remove post count (because if there is I think that would be a good idea).

Gonna handle the Kelly Forum. As long as I have a few days. Will be nice to restructure everything and get it organized, as we got tons of reports which are just forgotten.

Well, its about quality not quantity.

Poor forums need it.

Oh, I should save the main post of the Download Portraits thread. I would freak out if I lost the post and format and had to do it all over again.

As soon as I get home, though! Within some two hours.

I'll save the Order of the Flaming Blade stickies at some point before the migration. We have to many of them to lose them all.

Saved all the pages of all the stickies and important threads in the "Order of the Flaming Blade" faction area.

Also saved pages of the ACP 4.0 thread, the Overrides Thread and a few other threads.

Faction forums are on the list to save, but they need to be cleaned of the crap like the rest.

I am not sure about PMs. I guess they can be transferred, since they are tied to accounts... I THINK, I'm not SURE.

We're also facing the option that the forums are too buggy to be saved and all will be lost. That's why the horrible cleanup to see if the data mass can be lightened up as much as possible to save at least the important bits.

And deadline is... well, not before April.

It may be a nice idea if one or two people go through the photo thread and pick the latest piccies of active players. I bet I could make some script in PHP that automatically list the images so people can use them for an introduction of themselves or whatever. If I ever have the time I'd actually like some mini-facebook on Amia instead of the boring "show player" stuff now.

Well, what I mean is a simple tool with which you can do about the same as your profile but with the option to add some decent text and a (few) picture(s). If I can couple that to an overview with last updates we got something better than the current photo thread.

O, and if you think "why is that damned chicken not integrating my work, not updating my faction area, not fixing this and that bug, and/or not answering my PMs?".

Well, I am taking a crash course server hosting while looking for a good deal and that takes an ungodly amount of my spare (and I have to admit even work) time. Haven't opened the Toolset for more than 15 minutes since Friday and I doubt I will be doing a lot more for the next few days.

Edit: I've been on forums with no post count, and the effect it has on spam is remarkable. I've also been on forums which offered post count only for IC boards, that was nice as well.

To Admin,

Will you be granting temporary access to Faction Moderators so we can help out in cleaning up the private faction sections?

As is faction moderator can not move, delete, flat out clean up the faction area without Admin see post of "delete" "save" "archive" to do it for us.

I just like to help out in the clean up. Yoss, helped out the WK clean up months ago. Even now a few things were missed and some ooc stuff could use some spit and polishing.

As said, like to assist in this project being a moderator. Have some forum experience within the fingers.

Not sure. I got a backup, though.

I am quite far with a thread-to-text exporter. It simply combines all posts in a thread in a single BB coded file. Small threads should be easily repostable, big threads need to be cut and pasted over several new posts.

If I get the basics running I'll probably make a complete text/html file dump of the whole forum and make that available as an archive.

HAK and new players, your opinions...
--------------------------------------------------------------

Posted by Dev Disco on 28 Feb 2010

Let's not beat about the bush: the effect of the HAK on the amount of new accounts is simply dramatic. It's half of what it used to be as so-so times.

However, it doesn't seem to have a lot of effect on the actual activity on the server. I think this happens because many people log in, look at the entry, log out and are never seen again. It seems to me that this group of players is gone. Incidentally the number of bans for "log in naked with hacked character" behaviour seems to have been zero this month (not sure about this, though).

Anyway, I wonder about comments from the field. Do you notice any difference in this department?

Posted by hadeismetirion on 28 Feb 2010
I've noticed no real difference. Alas I'll be starting on a new job tomorrow and won't be able to hang around internet and check the forum every 10 minutes, but in the last month or so I haven't noticed any difference with the HAK active.

The A server still gets nearly completely full around the same times and the B server gets its normal amount of traffic too. Infact in that time I can personally account for two people joining up. The fact that a HAK needed to be downloaded wasn't an issue at all.

I say keep the HAK and start using it. It's the upgrade this server needs. I for one can't wait, getting tired of looking at the new play things in the toolset anyway.

Posted by QPR on 28 Feb 2010
Number of players logged in seem to be the same as it usually is, even a slight increase from lazy holiday times. Atleast i ahven't noted any difference.

Posted by Maias227 on 28 Feb 2010
What week did the hak go in?

Posted by Dev Disco on 28 Feb 2010
Week 4, about halfway.

Posted by Mr Mago on 28 Feb 2010
The only difference I've seen, from constant browsing of the forums and looking at the server status on the side bar, is a decrease this weekend. But only this weekend.

For the past two months, the server looks to have been just as active as normally.

Posted by hadeismetirion on 28 Feb 2010
The main concern here is decreasing number of players because they can't randomly come across the server anymore log in and experience it. It needs a extra set now. Namely going to a website, downloading a set of files with the dubious name of HAK files, manually putting them in a game folder and hoping it will run.

Easy as can be for most of us, but not every one understands the machine and software they use. Some just use it and for those this would be a rather scary undertaking. Unless they are convinced it is worthwhile.

Though I don't personally think it will be needed as mouth to mouth advertisement is likely to keep the playerbase strong enough. And besides this being one of the better (best) RP servers, it is likely to attract experienced players with knowledge of NWN's workings too.

But what I'm getting is that we could create a third server if need be. Very limited number of users, just a HAKless demo of the world of amia, a showcase as you will.

Posted by Sylfwe on 28 Feb 2010
Haven't noticed any difference at all, I actually think having the hak encourages people to visit the forums and thus see the rules and familiarize themselves with the specifics of the class they're planning to play, as well as the subraces and mechanical changes to the game. I don't think "forcing" them to come to the forum is a bad thing, most other servers have haks anyway so chances are most people would know how to use them, and those who don't... well you've seen the occasional distressed thread here and there and they can easily be pointed to the hak.

Posted by hadeismetirion on 28 Feb 2010
True. Getting people on the forum is never too bad a thing. It always amazes me that people that have been playing for years still never been on the forum. Dispite having over 6000 forum members. Clean up time?

Posted by jafman30 on 28 Feb 2010
I say begin to use the hak. I've actually noticed that B has -more- players than usual. This may be due to the ending of the holidays, of course.

Never know when some stray player may suddenly remember their account and start playing again. Or maybe most are just lurkers, they simply read but don't post.
