I'd like to get an idea of how many people agree with this statement.

"People use the messenger to check who's online, and if nobody they want to RP with is online, they don't come online. Of course everyone does this, so nobody comes online."

If you agree, like I do, would you then agree with my suggestion that the messenger be removed, as it's causing a lack of players to come online? Its not really that useful to send messages, as I've noted people can't send back and rarely bother reading the message. It's not got a very big limit for messages either.

So yay or nay for removal?

This isn't an offical thing, just a testing of water to get the idea out there. I got the idea from a comment in the UD thread that made me think that I do exactly this, and thus do not go online when nobody I want to RP with is on. Thats made me concerned that others do it to, and thus less people are online because of it.

(I've enabled revoting so if something changes your opinion you can change your vote.)

So people will just check the Character List at the selection screen. Seems like a pointless change.

At least people are logging in if they can see their friends online, don't think its worthwhile removing that function which will more than likely mean they don't log in.

You can't see the users names on the selection list however, you can in the messenger, and thus you don't know that one of those characters isn't one of the people you play with. Its one of those small things that can make a lot of difference in peoples choice to come online.

In the end we're a varied group of people playing an online game. I guess that playing with your friends is part of that.

Sure, but its not so much a friend thing.

So lets say I'm gonna use it to check if any users who play faction members are online? None are. So I don't go on. Thing is, the rest of the faction might be doing exactly that as well, and thus nobody else comes online. We aren't friends enough to have MSN or some of us don't have MSN on.

I vote nay. This decision is strongly influenced by my use of it, seeing if anyone is online using messenger from my bed via iPod, and if they were not, I got to sleep in.

Ofcourse, this brings up a whole other set of problems.... Anyway, I slept in till 12 that day... good times.

Besides, I see it as this way. Either I check the player list by logging in, than out. Or just checking it via forums. With the latter, its quicker, shows me the usernames, I can check from my iPod (and therefore, while in bed) and does not take a login slot.

Logically it shouldn't matter at all but humans are not logical. It is mater of context, looking at who is on from the forums and actually having logged into the server an only then seeing are two very different things and I have personally found that once you've reached that point far more people will log in then regardless of if people they know are online or not.

Edit: Now I quite like the messenger but it really can take you out of the "gaming" mindset before you even enter it.

Second Edit: That said, as long as you still log in I couldn't care less.

I'ma vote nay, I like the messenger, and yea alot of the time people check to see if their friends are on, but that's them. I usually log even if I see none of my friends on, I still log and find new people to talk with or something ^^

Na, leave it. Removing it does nothing good. You can't force people to come on if they don't want to RP with anyone but their buddies. It's their right to do that.

You can still look in the character screen and usually you DO know the chars in your faction and who plays them.

The main point is this, are you at all encouraged to log into NWN if you know before hand that NO ONE that you have any RP with is on? No you are not, but by forcing people to log in you are already bypassing that initial doubt about logging in at all.

Whether those people are your "friends" or not is irrelevant and writing it off as "only wanting to RP with friends" does a serious disfavour to the argument.

I do this. Actually it's nigh the only thing I use it for, but it works. Saves me the trouble of staring the game and checking the player list in game. The messenger stays!

I actually log in and check the list of characters, then use the rest function to check the other server. I suppose I could use the messenger instead. 8) But it's handy to be able to send messages to people on the other server or when you're out of the game.

It cuts both ways. Just because you have friends or a faction group that you hang out with, doesn't mean you're obliged to hang out with them every time they're on. You're a human being, not a remora.

You can't make people less silly by making them have to log all the way into the character selection screen. You can make them less silly by saying 'Word in your ear mate, if there isn't anybody for faction X on - log on anyway, that way you're a great big bloody Bat signal for anyone else from faction X.'

Really this is the ideal, I mean by all means, save time use the messenger but don't let it ever PREVENT you from getting your butt in game regardless of who is or rather is not on.

I've never actually used messenger, so I can completely dissagree with that statement. However, I've also been known to hop online, get in-game, and take a look at the player list to see if there's anyone I want to hang out with. If I'm bored and not in a grinding mood, I'll decide to do something else instead. I know I'm not the only one either.. so removing messenger won't actually solve anything.

Nay from me.

My reason - I want to know where people are, and i want to message them from the other server if they're not on my server, and vice versa.

Helps communication.

Mm. Being as I'm actively trying not to play save once with the forest crew, I use it to send faster messages than PMs if I need to get hold of someone. Leave it alone.

It's nice for when your game has one of those nice vista problems...crashes and doesn't want to come back up...you can pop over and send a message telling people you were rping with what happened.

Summary - The messenger has to many favourable additions and benefits for us, the playerbase.

And there's to little downsides and very few detriments.

When I first read this I voted yes. This was due to the fact I have had people pester me with the system, but after thinking about it messenger is very usefull though I never use it. The benefits far outway psychos harrasing you with it.

Opting out of being shown online by it should be an option(and by extension preventing you from messaged by it.)

Doing away with it entirely? I don't see the point because as was said before, you can just be seen on the char list.

And as an aside: Those of you who refuse to log on except to RP with your own cadre are doing yourself, the server, and everyone else a large disservice. I realize its your time to do with as you please but doing so prevents you from expanding your horizions and leads to missing many great opportunities with other folks.

I guess that's one of the benefits of knowing virtually nobody in a community, hard to discriminate.

I have only used the messenger once, and for the purpose of actually sending a message... that said, I have no qualms with those for whom it might be used differently, as in the ways described above. My vote is no.

I suppose. I just think it's silly to take party in a large community of roleplayers where expanding your horizons is part of what keeps the game alive and not gonig stale, so logging in to only talk to the same 3 people about the same RP subject, grind, and then log off, the idea of it just baffles me.

Too often I log in and search for people to RP with and find no one cuz they're all tucked away inside their little hidey-holes and don't wanna come out to RP with the rest of the world.

My monk is far from being limited to RP'g with the same group of people every day. As a matter of fact, his creepy nature makes him spy on everyone and anyone, opening up wide windows to expand his horizons and RP with new people.

I'll admit I've hesitated about logging in before due to their being no one online that I wanted to RP with at that time. But, it allowed me to go do other things that needed to get done instead of idling online wasting a server slot.

Some people call it a disservice. I think it highly depends on the circumstances and the player. As Disco said, I think players should be given the option of using the messenger to that ends if that's what they desire. Putting rules and regulations and limits on every last aspect of someone's life (especially their escape - NWN) serves only to depress and annoy people. Not to mention, I use it to send cross-server messages.

I voted no.

I agree with Moshing. If someone wants to check to see if friends are online, they'll do so by hook or by crook. It's either the messenger or the character selection screen. Sure, you may have a friend that's created a new character or dug one out of the back of their dusty character vault that you don't recognize, but the odds are in favor that they'll be on their more consistently played characters.

I'll admit that I check the messenger to see who's on. However, it doesn't have an effect on whether or not I play, only what character I play. If there's someone on that one of my characters has some pressing RP with, then I'll log on as that character. If not, then I'll log on as whichever character happens to need some work or whichever I feel the most in the right frame of mind to play.

I say keep it.

To each his own, I suppose. Ultimately it's not about RP, though. It's not even about keeping the game alive. It's about spending your free time in a way you find enjoyable yourself. You can choose to spend it on Amia, or on doing something else. I don't think it's our business to comment or interfere.

Actually that's not true, I wouldn't mind suggesting a bit less playing if I see somebody spending 100+ hours a week online... but I know I am a bit of a socialist in that department.

I share your bafflement, by the way, but in the end I feel that's my own problem.

yeah but we all like diffrent kinds of RP so if its just going to be a reset full of people talking about thier feelings, hugging and wuss stuff I would enjoy logging on WoW to Raid or PVP. I enjoy action and also not the run of the mill stuff so if people of a current plot are going on I log on and check on the status or guard/scout(Nes'ek event anyone 10hours aday guarding when I had my time off) so this is why I use the player list to see who is on of a plot is not in effect.

but I also bet DMs do the same thing, if they checked B-mia player list and 10 people like me were on and A-mia had its Dwagins,Xavieras...ect would you even log on to B?

I do not agree.

I only have my own experience of using it to come to my conclusion of disagreement.
Firstly: "People use the messenger to check who's online, and if nobody they want to RP with is online, they don't come online."

This may certainly be the case with "people", whomever they are. But not myself, so I guess I'm a counter example of these. Or maybe I'm not people.

Secondly: "Of course everyone does this, so nobody comes online."

As stated above, not everyone does this. If everybody did theis and nobody came online, the server wouldn't be at full capacity as I type this.

Therefore: I do not agree with your statement.

Personally, I've used the messenger numerous times, for good purpose, such as letting people know I crashed and the server is full, so I cannot log back in. Or to check which server someone I am supposed to meet up with in game is on.

Or to sexually harrass people, but shhhh! Don't tell anyone!

>.>

Seriously, I like it, and thusly vote no. I cannot fathom refraining from logging in when I otherwise wanted to, just because of who is or is not online. Or vice versa.

What I was saying was that if your watching messenger for players online who are taking part in a story or event, then its likely those same players are doing that also, and thus nither of you will go online.

If that makes it clearer?

not true if a event is going on people will log on, I spent hours guarding Nes'ek alone when it was late but also that was a large event any DM could take part in and could go kill undead in the area for something to do as I wait for people.

Yea, but the follow up RP, and RP that should happen with these players involved outside of the DM event doesn't, because they all watch messenger.

Anyway, this is just gauging a slight bit of information.

I see your point and understand the way you came to the conclusion. However, I politely disagree.

I look at the messenger often so before I log on I can go "Oh, [insert name or group] is on. I can go finish/continue my RP with them I had earlier if I log on as a particular character."

If not, I just log on as whoever I feel like and look for RP or do whatever it is I may.

In the end, I still log on, and I still RP. Like a lot of people I imagine, if I look at the messenger, I'm looking to see who's there to continue RP with, not -if- I'll log on to RP.

Coolies, just thought I'd clarify since some of the posts seemed a little confused or skewered my meaning a bit.

I personally have used Messenger couple times to send short commends to people who are on other server, usually after they just switched so it has no big use to me.

But to use Messenger to spy who is online so you can avoid them seems so ridiculous to me.. no offensive meant. :( If there is someone who I do dislike.. I just try to ignore them if they make something stupid in my opinion without letting it affect RP as least as possible.

*Qirlan does a backflip and starts ferociously making out with a drow*

Omg....omgomgomgomg everyone has to see this. Gotta get them over here! Damn these split servers! Well at least I can use my trusty messenger serv-BLAST!

*qirlan finishes and stabs said drow, moving on to other nefarious forms of racism*

.............*censored*

And thus, I vote nay. Good day.
