from what I know of drow I agree. doesn't mean it doesn't grow down there though. i've decided google is -cencored x 9001- ... and I don't think the underdark exists in 1st ed so i'm out of luck on source info.

As for pregnancy and such, if memory serves, theres one or more books that speak of such things happening in game and what the dm should do, not to even mention the players handbook should have a great deal of info on each race (state the obvious but yea.) I don't remember anything like pregnancy in adnd so I think we can rule that out. (I has the mystra campaign basic box, v2 I think. hate adnd though...who the hell invented thAC0...)

ed: had a brain spasm...epithiny...whatever....its in the epic level books.

I think it boils down to what you've seen: you can't just change into whatever arbitrary form you wish, it has to be a real creature you have some idea of.

Not with Shifters. You may, for example, have seen a 42 STR Human (whether by demonic grace, strange breednig, or the sort) - but without it fitting into the norms of such creatures, it cannot be copied. It's a weird 'Not Perfect Sense' thing, that I believe can be ICly rationalized to the fact that any form they assume must be possessing of standard scales and mechanical balances to function, normally, for that creature. 9 Legged Driders wouldn't be driders in this context, as it would thusly need to possess an irregular (and thus forbidden) construction.

The best rule-of-thumb with shifters is "Is it a Species, a Race, or an Exception?". The first two are OK, the last is not. I'd give you all of the sources, but sadly I'm still 14,000 miles away from my computer, my books, and my notes (Shifters are 'my thing', so to speak, much as Elves and Gods are yours)

Ah, thanks.

GuNZ, I didn't get the joke. >_>

On UD narcotics: I don't own the novel, but I seem to remember something about wild revels among drow youth in Cunningham's Daughter of the Drow. I don't remember exactly, but I have the impression they were something like magical foam parties with intoxicated drow stumbling around (something which their elders of course didn't approve of).

I'm pretty sure narcotics are popular in drow society, so I disagree with Gers in a way. I see drow society as decadent, colorful, freakish and full of double-standards, far from totalitarism and puritanism. The common drow is probably anything but disciplined. It's not as if commoners go around stabbing eachother for no gain. It's very important to realize that what we read about drow norms in novels and mostly in game supplements too, applies to the top levels of society: the warriors, mages, priestesses, the noble houses and official institutions. To make generalizations about the lowest depths of drow society, those many that socialize with slave races daily and live in crowded slums, based on what the church and state considers appropriate is probably very misleading.

But literally, Gers is probably right: they would probably be frowned upon in Llothite culture. That doesn't mean that the real culture of the lowborn drow in a Llothite city would exclude them, though. I guess it's something the nobles might enjoy in safe privacy and frown upon in public, but it's nonetheless done.

I have a quick question! I know there's no mention of Maztica in the timeline, so I wanted to ask what Amia's stance is on something that happened in 1374 DR, which is after the 1373 DR cut-off, obviously. In the Maztica box set it says that a small 500-man army from the Sword Coast conquered most of Maztica that year. I just want to know if that's something that would be allowed, since I wanted to write about my character going to Maztica via the same ship route that they had had to take. I know Maztica is technically a completely different campaign setting, but it does tie in with Forgotten Realms enough that I have to ask. Any help would be appreciated! I don't want to write something that didn't happen, in case it too was changed in Amian lore.

Edit: Nevermind! I found it. xD It didn't happen in 1374. I don't know where I got that. It was more like 1361.

I know(or at least think) warlocks don't exist in 3.0 Edition, but what would be the likely equivalent of a Warlock in forgotten realms at this time(amia's time). Sorcerer with a fiendish bloodline? Sorcerer/BG that makes a pact with a devil? Or is it likely too far-off to equate warlock to anything in our timeline?

A sorcerer/blackguard is probably as close as you will get to a Warlock in NWN.

Passive demonic powers, along with spontaneous spell-like abilities sums up a warlock.

No real need, but it does add flavor, an extract from Complete Arcane:

"Many warlocks are champions of dark
and chaotic powers. Long ago, they (or in some cases, their
ancestors) forged grim pacts with dangerous extraplanar
powers, trading portions of their souls in exchange for
supernatural power. While many warlocks have turned
away from evil, seeking to undo the wrongs of their
former colleagues, they are still chained by the old
pacts through which they acquired their powers. The
demand to further the designs of their dark patrons,
or to resist them, drives most warlocks to seek the
opportunities for power, wealth, and great deeds (for
good or ill) offered by adventuring"

Quick question - is it still 1378 in Amia, or has it become 1379? Just want to know, so I don't mix up the dates my character arrived. Also, what month of 1378 was Amia forest burned down?

Generally speaking, for the Grand History of the Amian Realms, where possible we've run off real time. This means that 2010 is now 1379 D.R., yes.

I don't know when the forest was burned offhand, but it'd be in there. As would the Banite resurgences and the Green lake issuesand any other major events.

Oops, I edited while you posted. Here's what I added:

Another question ... how long is it by boat from Wiltun to Cordor? From the map at http://img709.imageshack.us/i/worldmape.jpg/ it would appear to be three times the 'height' of Ruathym, which is roughly 120 miles by the Forgotten Realms Atlas ... this means that it is 360 miles apart which, using the PHB measure of 48 miles / day for a sailship is over a week (or four days if it's a galley)

So i think i remember seeing something about drow item enchantments becoming weaker in sunlight. But does that mean all drow magic is weaker in the sun?

If a sorcerous bloodline draws power from a necrotic source, is the inheritance of pale master attributes (in other words, an involuntary "inheritence" of the class) a sound concept?

That stuff was retconned in 3e because Wizards felt it was overall a detriment to the game. It was a change based entirely on game mechanics and moving forward Drow gear has no penalties in the sun, which makes your next question a bit moot.

Define "Necrotic source". 99% of undead can;'t have children and so a "necrotic bloodline" can never be established by definition. Vampires don't bear vampire children innately and being a vampire isn't a source of sorcerous power. Not to menion the flavor text and class bits for Palemaster explicitly say that they come about as a result of vile, disgusting modifications you do to yourself.

IIRC, so called "necrotic" bloodlines are established by the humanoid being born under "dark" circumstances, i.e. mother painfully dies in labor(while cursing the child/father sometimes), born on unholy ground, born in the presence or under the guidance of "dark powers".

But Tormak's certainly right about the Pale Master thing, you don't involuntarily become one, just like Dragon Disciple. You willingly perform and undergo several dark rituals and surgeries to become and advance as one.

BUT

I think a sorcerer being of a necrotic bloodline serves as a perfect reason for that character to seek out and want to become a Pale Master. Perhaps against their better judgement, like an urging or something.

There's also the "Faiths and Pantheons: Dos and Don'ts" file you can download for free from the Wizards of the Coast web site. It's not much, but it's something.

Hey,

I've a question concerning the Portal Wands and the Crystals in which they are able to be bound to. I've done a search on the forums and Wiki but can't seem to find anything that answers my questions.

What happens when you bind yourself or wand to a crystal. Is it you binding, or the wand?

Also how is the bind achieved, do you take a small shard of the crystal and install it into your wand, or is there some sort of energy transfer that links the wand or user to the crystal?

Why are you able to bind only to certain crystals and not others?

And what happens when you relinquish a bind to an old crystal in favour of another?

All of this is stuff better learned IC, to be perfectly honest. I'll answer the physical bits though... but not the hows or the whys. Mostly because they pertain to a questline I'm running nand I'm not going to spoil the answers on the forum for the PCs.

When you bind, the wand is bound, not you. Lose your wand, lose your binds. It's an energy transfer. And all that happens when you change an od one for a new one is that you can't go to the old one anymore.

Awesome, thanks.

ICly getting the info is better, I agree, but ICly I've seen more than one way of binding to the crystals, possibly conflicting with each other.

Mainly my reasons for asking is I wanted some sort of canon lore concerning the wands/crystals, considering how freely available the wands are (ie. upon character creation), my reckoning is that this type of info would/should be commonly known amongst most of the populace, the adventuring populace certainly should know this anyway.

Cheers

The "How they work" I refuse to answer and I'd ask other DMs to not answer as well, because it directly deals with the series of events I'm running regarding it. There are a few PCs who have ideas and I bet you could probably make a few guesses where to go based on my next answer.

The wands are made by the Monolith of Mystra, by the clergy of Mystra and distributed by them to the adventuring process, possibly middlemanned by cities as a distribution method, for what is typically a modest fee. That's how every adventurer starts with them. It's assumed they've gone through adventurer channels and procured one.

The Purple Dragon was just a really really old black dragon, a bit more explained here.

Otherwise there's purplish colored dragons, but I don't think there's a specifically designated purple species.

I think due to the lack of living dragons i'm going to have to find a player rival, who would agree that they did indeed kill glyph's father. gem dragons? O_o they didn't have THAT in dragon magazine...chromatics are generally evil as compared to metallica no? that said I met a nice red half dragon, and alignment isn't a be all and end all.

I have a lore question, and after 10 minutes I finally remember what it was :)

why is cordor the city of tollerance? whats the backstory behind that one? also I think I just missed this when I rejoined amia last month, what exactly the heck did bane do the cordor west O_o and why if its not too secret. also who's rebuilding it, ninja stonemasons? :)

last question..............is there a backstory to "the shield" that can be discussed (ic no one knows who put it there, its in the item description) and, yes or no, is it possible in any way for it to...no longer be of use...yes or no, don't wanna know how, no ooc player should. ooc I know what it does cause I was on during an event (but not in cordor.) ways back. whats it called, stormguard? Its not in the wiki under cordor. no pun intended. wait what? ...

ah, I did fully forget one that just came to me, does amia religiously do as the official timeline states or is it an alternate history timeline? I ask because of a previous question about a forest burning down, does this mean it has to happen or could?

ed: "chromatics are generally evil as compared to metallica no?"

lol, whoops...

ed2: one more question because I am slightly a noob in 3.5, whats the difference between psy and magic?

Cordor being the city of tolerance is old hat. It no longer really is. Bes tto find out IC.

Cordor West: read forums, ask IC.

"The Shield" a.k.a. Weathershroud: Find out IC.

There's an official timeline that we use posted in the Rules and Lore forum.

Magic vs. Psionics: Magic relies on the Weave, Psionics is entirely under the Pc's own mental powers. Psionics also requesres an approved DM request.

Gem Dragons are all neutral and all innately psionic.

Two questions partially related:

The "shadow stuff" that Shadow Variant spells are formed out of: would it be possible to form a permanent object out of this "stuff"? Equipment, weaponry, artifacts, tools?

Second one is about quasi-magical items. I can barely find any information on them. I know that mythallar are classified as a type and I infer that quasi-magical means that the item is partially or completely formed from the Weave itself. Is this correct? And where can I find more examples of quasi-magical items?

I don't think they're ever detailed anywhere. Specifically, for the sake of leaving the RP up to the PC and DM, just like Pale Master's rituals. I could be wrong, I don't own whatever book Dragon Disciple shows up in.

My guess would be that it depends on the character and the type of dragon they study. Yes, study. It's a disciple, after all. Maybe traveling to a place sacred to that species of dragon, a place known to harbor their kin, meditating/studying near or with a dragon(or dead dragon in the case of chromatics?), it's really up to you in the end.

Maybe. Wow us with RP and convince us why it should.

As I understand (could be wrong) quasi-magical items that were created by the Netherese drew upon the magical aura of a mythallar, which extended about a mile in radius. These items, while in the radius of a mythallar, functioned as magic items. Outside the radius, they were rendered mundane. Basically, they are 'fed' their enchantment from the mytallar, which draw upon the Weave.

Quite, the quasi-magical items basically functioned off the power of the mythallar. I would imagine most of these items would be convience items, sort of like having modern luxiories (Running water, lighting, etc.) basically anything making life easier for the mages in the enclaves.

Thanks for your answers guys, good info. Pretty much magic items that are only magic in the field of a mythallar, I suppose.

Lichdrow is just a title given to a drow that is a lich, unless I'm mistaken. As in Lord Dyrr, known as the Lichdrow of House Agrach Dyrr. Link. I think he's the only one every actually referred to a- actually The "Lichdrow".

If you mean just a drow lich, they probably wouldn't differ much in appearance from that of a Baelnorn or any other lich. Just a drow that is a lich. Scrivviled, dry, bony...or just bones. You know, the works.

Okay cool. Thats what i thought but Shangalar the Black is a teifling lich and he has Black bones instead of white so i was wondering if drow lichs look different than regular ones.

Actually normal liches eventually rot, like a normal corpse, becoming almost completely bones. Arch liches (non-evil liches), of which a Baelnorn is a subcategory of, look similar to what they did in life. Their skin becomes thin however and they still look rather creepy. They also keep their hair. Drowlich are a subcategory of normal Lich, so they eventually rot almost totally away.

I don't know, drow are still Elven in terms of race, despite what is said or believed IC. I would think the reason Baelnorns don't rot away like other liches is because of the elven longevity. Human liches live for centuries. Elven liches, millenia. I cannot find anywhere that says drow liches as a rule rot away, but nothing that says they don't, either.

You could perhaps argue though that the way they become liches has something to do with it though. Baelnorn are gifted lichdom through divine magics from the Seldarine. While liches, and supposedly a regular drow that becomes a lich would make the transition via good ol' necromancy and the Arcane and suffer the deterioration of a regular lich, since its the same methods.

Though I can site no cases, and it's only speculation, I don't see why the Dark Seldarine(or likely just Lloth) could permit a "baelnorn" of sorts, and thus drow liches that do not rot. Though even then, I'd call it unlikely, as I'd see the Drow as a culture more likely to turn to the Arcane and necromancy for such things.

Liches live for forever, race doesn't matter, as long as nothing destroys the phylactery.

Every body eventually withers and rots. Liches keep fresh corpses around to transfer to if they need it, and innately have Disguise Self to glamer themselves to the appearance they need.

Arch Liches have a bit of a different process. Especially Baelnorn. Some Baelnorn are made through the exact process as a regular Arch Lich, others are made by the Corellon and gang. The ones made by Corellon and gang have no phylactery.

I know they do. I said liches, not baelnorn.

So it would probably look like a human lich. Just the finer elven bones? Probably short if a male. Because Male drow are normally short?

Drow period are shorter than Elves, in general. I don't rightly know what color Drow bones are, but I don't find any reason to believe they would be black. I would think they would look like any other normal lich, only a small Elven (Drow) figure, yeah.
