The note is taken down, replied to, and put in militia files.

*a general warning and militia order go out*

Any grouping of flying creatures (bats, birds, bugs, or other) passing over the Dale walls or causing trouble/damage to Dale lands are to be brought down and non-adventurer citizens to retreat inside until a member of the militia gives the all clear. Solitary creatures are allowed, as normal, as are familiars or animal companions that accompany their humanoid companion.

Soon after the swarm of bats was driven off from Bendir Dale, Brena can be seen moving about the town and reinforcing its defences with a 'weapon' to ward off the recent vampiric threat. Bulbs of garlic are seen placed by door-ways and at the windows of public buildings; including the Hinn Inn, shops, and the Town Hall itself. She also gives garlic wine to the hin in those buildings for when they return to their homes. On her patrol over Dale territory, she is also seen giving more bottles of garlic wine to stationed militia guards to protect them against the new foe, informing them to dab some of the liquid on themselves while on duty at night. These precautions may not provide the most refreshing smell, but it's a small price to pay when lives are being protected.

Every now and then, the occasional bulb is snagged from various strings of garlic hung out in the open.

On an unrelated matter, Johanna Hardingdale's breath is notably more pungent.

Having finished preparing the militia guards and nod-adventurer residents of Bendir Dale, Brena looks over what remains of the stock of garlic and garlic-based products in order to distribute them amongst the hin who frequently spend their days travelling throughout the isle. Some garlic wine will be left with Fendel, but the rest she'd hand out herself.

Scrawled unneatly across a parchment-note.

Indeed, even those uninterested in the notices will from time to time see a glorious looking warrior, who mostly appears to be waiting around for now.

*Written in hin and to be dictated to residents who are unable to read hin*

If a strong sense of doom suddenly comes across everyone present within Bendir Dale, all militia are to supervise an evacuation of Dale residents. Do not take the time to collect any personal belongings. Get everyone outside of Dale lands, attempting to move towards Cordor (unless the feeling gets worse in that direction). A portal to a safe area is prefered, but if forced to walk, be sure to create a perimeter to keep hostiles away from non-combatants. Keep moving until the feeling passes, and secure anyone who begins to act paranoid (without harming anyone).

Cast Mind Blank and Protection from Chaos on one scout in a group of two to see if the feeling has left every 15 minutes, unless the previous scouts fail to return. If previous scouts fail to return, wait 30 minutes before sending a fully prepared mage and when the feeling ebbs and the non-combatants have returned to the Dale safely, all available militia are to search for the missing guards.

*a notice appears on Bendir lands*

I recently was informed that the Eternal Order of Kelemvor set up a blockade on our lands.
I told them to leave, and they did so.
We at the Dale protect our own, and we do not need unwanted help. If anyone wishes to aid us, please speak to me to acquire permission before setting up camp.

Several days ago, in the haze of the afternoon sun, folks that so happened to be in Bendir Dale proper, just might have heard the two quite large explosions that rocked the area across the river behind the Town Hall. The few militia training that day run to the shoreline and squint their eyes to try and make out what might be going on over there. Clouds of dust, dirt, and rocks billow into the air following the first blast, soon after, within fifteen seconds, a second blast from the same area catapults even more debris, which plummets down to the earth, scattering the native wolves that live near the woodline.

Anyone that goes there to investigate, can find the scarred and blackened remains of the blast protruding from the side of a cliff directly across the river from the Town Hall, but surprisingly enough, the rubble that has previously blocked off a cave entrance, is relatively unharmed, aside from some relocation of the giant rocks residing there, and of course, the discoloration and carbon traces indicative of a black powder blast. One might even be able to find splinters of wood scattered about as well.
In the little alcove near the blast site, one can find a nice fire ring made of rocks, and some laid-over grass where a tent might have been.

EDIT: This was supervised by a DM

Name(s) of involved: Leticia Sway. Others are Unknown.

Description(s) of involved: Leticia, a human, and a shifter as well as two elves.

Description of events: An elven lass brought in a shifter she claimed to have found dead on the road. He was slain by a Palemaster's touch, the necromantic rot already taking effect. Leticia managed to ressurect the shifter and restore him to health. He babbled on for a moment about the Pale Master and then left as a chicken.

Militia reaction/other details: Patrolled the area for the Palemaster. He had departed after the attack. From what I was told by the female elf, he appeared to be elven or drow. And the shifter claimed that the assailent plans to attack elves.

Blade, the small dark-skinned and green-haired hin, has been around the Dale more regularly, specifically asking to see Mayor Nof and/or militia officers. A giant, black-and-green spider follows her around closely, staying in a tree outside the gates when Blade goes inside.

With the approval of the militia officers, Blade starts entering the Dale with a giant spider (Tinu) following very closely, but only when one of the officers are around at first.

Brena explains to the citizens that Tinu is Blade's friend and that she's harmless. Blade confirms that whenever necessary, and swears on Yondalla that Tinu will only ever defend herself or Blade, and then only if they're attacked first. Otherwise, Tinu's harmless.

*A small masked figure comes from the north and waits at the edge of the forest until all activity is done and the parties have gone. Moments later, the ferret slinks through the low grasses toward the burned area. It looks at the damage to any nearby trees or plants, and checks for any wildlife that might have been in the way. The ferret sniffs out a wolf that has burns on it's backside. The ferret promptly runs behind a rock.*

*The small masked figure stands up from behind the rock and approaches the wolf, trying to calm it. The wolf stays still but alert and the figure applies what little healing spells she has to the creature. The wound is cleaned and tended but will likely never fully heal. The wolf hears a call from it's pack and limps off slowly into the forest. The masked figure sadly realizes that the wolf will likely fall to a predator within the next tenday. The hawk then turns about and launches itself skyward, soaring silently for a few minutes then turning north.*

"Words words words" can be heard muttered in some places.

It also seems that some children may have been encouraged to throw rocks at the monstrous creature.

Any residents asking Johanna's opinion it would be clear:

"If the lass can come in without the spider, there ain't need for the spider to come in."

Also rumours start to spread including: "It's diseased", "It's a she-kat usin' mind control on the poor girl", "Have you seen the weird colours of that one? She's clearly not a hin", "Lolth's avatar has come to the dale".

Any rumors that Brena catches wind of are corrected, the lieutenant speaking to the residents politely and putting down any wild beliefs with words of truth and logic.

Whenever Blade and Tinu arrive in the Dale and Brena is the officer on duty, any children that move towards Tinu's tree with rocks in hand are met with a rather stern glare before she questions them as to who put such a wild idea in their heads.

Brena also tasks some members of the militia to help trace these rumors to the source. Someone's causing trouble, and Brena intends to find out whom before it escalates.

*A small notice is added to this*

To Concerned Resident(s),
Blade's companion, the spider known as Tinu, is as gentle and safe as the animals that travel with any druid or ranger. Blade is being trained as a Ranger by both Willow and the Arch Druid, two experts in the natural world. The reason that she brings Tinu into the Dale is so that she may be comfortable with other people. She is shy, her actions and personality resembling that of a child. She will not attack anyone and, if given the chance, you could even find her presence enjoyable. This could also become a learning experience for many.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to seek me out. I wll give you answers based on my observations, not gossip.

Mother bless,
Lieutenant Brena 'Planewalker' Swift

A notice is put up on the board in Hinn Inn.
It reads:

"As many of you know, one of the MILITIA has decided for us that a GIANT SPIDER is freely allowed to walk around with its "owner". This has never been allowed before, and with good reason. I for one cannot eat a turnip knowing that they might be on the other side of the wall, and I know many of you feel similar.

I'm tired of the screaming children, when they should be playing, not running in fear.

I call you to not be shy and sign here to show the mayor that the lieutenant does not speak for us all."

Let it be known that I do not, nor will I ever, claim to speak for Bendir Dale as a whole. My action was based on the laws, and

*all of the previous notices on this subject are removed and replaced with a notice in a gold-colored ink*

Our new laws were clearly decided at a Town Meeting (that Johanna attended, I might add). Law VIII, as the Lieutenant said, states that "Animal companions and familiars are allowed, but only if they are not fiends, undead or any other evil creature. Killing a companion not banned by the law counts as assault against the owner. " A spider is not a fiend, undead, or even evil--it is an animal.

This fear-mongering will stop or our hand will be forced to stop it.

As horse-sized wolves and bears are allowed in, this spider is allowed in under the same laws as other companions.

Johanna looks at the note where the petition should be in utter disgust. She storms out of the inn, not happy.

Of course, the effect would have been much more dramatic if she weren't so small and frail for a halfling.

Seeing all the back and forth, Willow herself leaves a letter in attempts to calm fears and promote understanding.

People of Bendir Dale,

I understand your fears and I understand that you would question that a giant spider is allowed to enter Bendir Dale walls. You have a right to fear and question, as residents. However, I should tell you that a Giant Spider is no more dangerous than a Dire Wolf, Brown Bear, Panther, Lion or Tiger. In fact, in some cases, when found in the wild, some of the other creatures mentioned can be much more aggressive than most Giant Spiders.

You have, for many years, allowed people like myself to enter with my two Dire Wolf companions, past and present ones. You've allowed my brothers and sisters in cause to enter with their respective companions as well for many years. Blade has the know how to prevent her companion from wildly attacking residents and travelers. Her companion, much like my own, will only do harm to those who it's directed to harm and those who harm it or Blade herself.

Before you condemn the giant spider, simply for it's appearance, I ask that you give it a chance. A better understanding of natures many creatures can be gained from this. Learn from the teachings of the Green Sister, Sheela Peryroyl, and embrace nature in all it's forms. Spiders have their place in nature, just like any Wolf, Cat, Rat or Mouse.

Willie Tumbleleaf signs his name to the newest petition and adds a note. "This argument has been had in the Dale before, twice to my knowledge. Once, many years ago, before most had ever heard of Bendir Dale. The general consensus of the population and that of the Council was that no giant spiders were to be allowed in the Dale. A second time was with this same person and her pet. The militia leaders at the time followed the same sentiment as the past decision. Unfortunately the afore mentioned law was not altered as it should have been. It is true that by the letter of the law it does not specify or exclude giant arachnid, but letting this monster into the Dale does go against decades of Dale spirit and custom. The citizens of our beloved community were never given the chance to voice their opinions on such a decision that to many is extremely important and offensive. In just this short time I have heard many complaints about this new "guest" of the Dale, from citizens and visitors both. Some are afraid to voice their opinions and concerns, and for what appears to be good reason. The first citizen to speak their mind and put forth a petition, has had their voice squashed by the militia. Is the militia so afraid of the peoples voice that they threaten compliance through violence? I am rather shocked and dismayed by this whole ordeal.
When I did my stint in the militia, we were to Serve and protect the people of the Dale. Not force feed personal opinion. Let the peoples voice be heard.
On a personal note, I can not be in the Dale when this creature is about. My first witness to a violent death was watching a giant spider subdue and eat my boyhood friend, and having been held captive and tortured by Llothites I was a chew toy for just such. Repeatedly drained of my life's blood and kept alive. There is no "getting over" my fears. I would like to thank those responsible for ignoring years of Dale custom and turning the place I've always returned to as my home into the home of my deepest trepidation.

*the petitions and comments continue to be removed, though Willow's is left up and another note left under Willow's*

If you have a complaint, submit it privately to one of the Militia officers. We will listen and respect any complaint or worry submitted in private.

If you want the law changed from what it is, talk with Mayor Nof and arrange a Town Meeting.

Otherwise, this spider has the same rights as any animal companion. And harassment of kin will not be tolerated.

*A note is posted in dark green colored inks on light golden parchment by a hin in similarly colored armors who proudly hammers a nail into each corner with a deft skill then strides off to the North End alone*

Citizens,
Oh yes, the objections are heard. Most loudly coming from one quarter. Interestingly I note the loudly proclaimed reason is "fear" of such a creature. Fearful are we of a spider? I think ye underestimate the courage and fearlessness of your own kinfolk. I do not however. As sister Willow has stated, though larger than the normal garden spider, it is no more dangerous than similar companions whose kin are known to attack and eat travelers of even bloated human size.

Odd that such a lament and protestation should come from a contingent of folk who proudly wear the scare mask of the Harlequins. This device is designed to soothe the youngsters of the Dale into their peaceful dreams is it? Nay. Yet no protests are drawn up to banish such from our Dale. Why? Because life is sometimes kind and sometimes frightful and by working together and aiding each other we fruitfully live our lives and endure what trials it brings.

I thought long and hard before privately voicing my approval to allow such creature the honor of walking among us. My decision personally stemmed from my conviction that the Dale citizenry would, in time, come to see the fairness of it and not allow an unwarranted fear borne of association to overcome wisdom in this matter. I must say that I am sorely disappointed in some of you and hope that in the fullness of time you will come to see the other side of this and at least recognize their legitimate point of view.

Muther's Blessings on all,
Okra Cobcruncher

EDIT: The original OOC slashes weren't necessary, I replaced them with asterisks.

Willow tacks up a reply with tree sap.

I should make a clarification here. I never said these other creatures ate people in the wilds, simply that they are sometimes more aggressive. Most people simply do not taste good to animals and they would not eat them, unless they were desperate for food. There are very few cases and circumstances where Dire Wolves, Brown Bears, Panthers, Lions or Tigers would eat most people. They will not hesitate, however, to kill you if they feel you threaten them or their kin. So while it's right to be careful around wild creatures, it's not often the case that they would eat you.

In any case, I hope you will all give this Giant Spider the same chance you gave my companion Dire Wolves, Bella's companion Panther, Jo's mouse and all other creatures our kin and travelers have brought into our walls.

*A note is left on Mayor Nof's desk.*

Good Mayor Nof,
the citizens of the Dale have a debate regarding giant arachnids.
Please stop eating for moment and mediate on this matter by calling for a town meeting.
Thank you.

Spiderlings hatch from eggs.
Each one has eight icky legs.
A spider has more eyes than you.
Most have eight, and you have two.
A spider only has an evil heart.
Across its web it quickly darts.
Giant spiders feel the frantic plea,
Of their favorite food; it's you and me!
To spiders in the dale say no!
Put them away from us, because I fear it so!

As Juliette hears of this upon a visit, she quickly jots down a poem, sticks it up at the notice board and then leaves with a long and dramatic "Eeeeeeeeeeeew".

The Office to elect mademoiselle Johanna Hardingale as the next
Mayor is now ready to give it's plan for Bendir Dale!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tear down the walls of Bendir Dale and no longer live in a fort!
Because we should not fear outsiders just because we are short!

We all know living in a walled world of grey stone is sad!
When have we all become so scared and mad?

More merrymaking, more wine, more food, more song!
More gardens, more flowers, more dance, more getting along!

Prettier houses, more peace, less outsider riot!
Lets stop living on this sorrowful human minded diet!

Lets expand to the north and build a paradise here!
Like Yondalla intended, with barrels of running beer!

Peace and comfort should be our way!
And with Hardingale we will get our say!

Because what are we when we make the world not better?
A man or woman worth less than a dirty and wet sweater!
