I was just curious if the Developers were going to work on balancing up the familiars since summons and Animal Companions have been done? I'd really love to see some friendliness given to those familiars that just aren't used that often say like: Raven, Rat, Bat, The Mephits(?). I know it's just my personal opinion but it'd be nice to have and yes yes I know wizards and sorcs are powerhouses but I doubt the devs would make any familiar into a super killer thing... well maybe the panther but it already does that.

Well for my part I just want Minaella's Raven to have some chance to survive the lvl 30 encounters. As is he does no real help in battle and dies ine 2-4 hits even fully buffed XD

Personally I feel the combat role of all the familiars ought to be brought down a peg or two. They really ought to be for scouting, support and roleplay. Arcane casters have enough access to summonable/dominated beat sticks as it is. Also the original PnP idea of familiars is small animals like toads, rats, cats etc not ''roided up panthers and dragons''.
Anyway I trust Mosh to sort it out, but at the moment certain familiars are a free pass to lvl 10 or higher when used right.

Well my two bits would be when balancing the familiars, even with Mosh's proposed thing, it's good to keep in mind the things that are already pretty squishy in melee vs the melee-oriented familiars.
I'd in fact say break it into two groups. As is, certain familiars aren't ubertank/warriors even with the current bonuses, and removing it from them really wouldn't be doing anything except nerfing them for the hell of spiting the others.
Psuedodragon, Faerie dragon, panther and hellhound are usually the ones that get held up as too strong. While the others(maybe with the exception imp which Ive not really seen IC before) pretty much rely on their "tricks" to get by, such as bolts and abilities, after which are used, they pretty much don't pose much of a threat with their middling strength and damage.
So my suggestion: break the familiars down into two groups. The first, familiars like imps and mephits and whatnot that are for the most part defensive and gimmicky, keep the current familiar bonii to reduction and such. The second, the melee focused, damage-y familiars like pseudo and panther, tone their defensive things down, let them keep their enchantment to attack in progression.
Not all familiars play in the same manner, so there's no real reason to give and take their bonii away in a simular manner, besides expediency.

I would rather summon my companion in battle than a summon monster because of RP.. Makes me sad when he dies so fast.

There are other ways that they can find that out.. like if you are casting necromancy spells some do assume right away. I guess you are speaking of Planar Binding spell? I though you could just pick the default familiars as a wizard regardless of alignment.. unless I am mistaken.. I've never really picked outside on my one.

I'm sorry- its just a misunderstanding here. I was under the assumption we where on the topic of Familiars when you said.. Quote: Mhmm, was never too fond of people instantly knowing your alignment because they find you hunting.

I ain't gonna really touch the whole "know your align by summon" thing. It's Amian flavor, but the sentiment has been put forth in the past that technically, Good or Evil should both be able to call on neutral aligned summons, just because they're that: Neutral. And as well, Neutral upon Good or Evil, under some circumstances. But that opens up a whole new can of worms.
But now that I think about it, it would make sense in most cases for familiars to eventually gain the same align as their master over time. The bond between master and familiar is stronger than any other sort of summon, even a Companion in some respects. It would stand to reason that over the course of a mages career, they become more alike on a deeper level. I know at least that's how I've played mine. My mages runty beholder(eyeball) followed him out of the UD when he was a teen, and has been with him as a familiar well over a century. Although eyeballs are mechanically evil, since he's been bound to a neutral caster for so long, except when it really counts in rp(smites, etc ,etc) I rp and treat him as Neutral as well.
Anyway, we might wanna take a look into having familiars take master align as well. I suppose that does bring a question though when a Good mage takes a Imp as a familiar. But that interns brings another question:
The hell is a Good mage doing taking an Imp as a familiar?

I never said it wasn't lore accurate. I just hate it, going from "Hell yeah, lookit mah ice mephit!" to... that weird guy that keeps a weasel or a pet beetle and is way, way closer to it than a healthy person should be.

well, in my mind, familiars have negligable combat ability but knowing Amia and how the animal companions were balanced, the combat prowess of those currently suffering will likely be improved. Meh, im just speculating.

Well not to go off on a tangent but most people don't even use their familiars past a certain point and hardly use them for RP which isn't of course the 'systems' fault. But one might hope to see familiars out and about more often if they were improoved of course one problem with the familiar fun is the metagame. I use the crow on Minaella for spying for delivering messages etc. It looks like every other crow on the island but of course since it's the only one that the players can see OOC'ly they go "Oh a familiar, lets be whispery or talk in tells or kill it."
anyways rant off.

I RP my familiar somewhat like a PC, but not all the time cause that could get annoying, or become too much like metagaming. I made someone think it was a polymorphed PC so I must be doing something right =)
can fey pixies learn faerie fire with DC's? would be a nice addition, especially as i'm not getting epic caster levels and its gunna max at level 17, but i've not really got any complaints about familiars. panther is far far to overused, and a skinchange on the hellhound might be nice for a non evil style dog companion. obviously its still gunna have evil coded into it unless its scripted >_>
