It says i can observe certain monster and what not, but when i try to observe something it just says doesn't work.. what am i supposed to be looking at? i tried talking to the instructor but he doesn't give youany specific task go look at this or what not.

Here's a hint. Arcanists are forgetful sods, so they need something to record their observations. I think.

I agree...I'm completely lost on what to look for this job. I've tried books, I've tried monsters, I've tried everything and I still have no idea how the arcanist job work.

Someone should make a complete GameFAQs guide describing how these job things work, where you can find them and what you can do with them.

Uncle Amia wants YOU to take the initiative!

magical creatures, to answer your question. the matrix is quite useful to see which jobs compliment eachother and what makes what, and what you need to make it.

http://www.amiaworld.net/about/ds_j_matrix.php?filter=job_id&value=81 <-- for example.

and by magical creatures I don't mean creatures that use magic, find out icly ? *nudge wink* or um, the monster manual but thats sort of cheating...

ed: what selmak said aswell, the same as when you look at the stars you need......... >_>

"find out icly" that's stupid, you don't see actors in movies find out what their job is, in the actual movie

it's knowledge your character would have, even if you dont

Knowing how to do the job system is not an 'in character' thing, but an out of character needed knowledge of game mechanics. As was said, it's the players who don't know how the game mechanics work to have their characters, in game, actually do the jobs they have been trained in. I agree and I've been a bit frustrated by the secrecy of a system and game mechanic with something that is clearly not secret knowledge in game. Knowing that a apothecary needs potion bottles and herbs doesn't mean you are now an apothecary.

I have to agree with Pax,
The job system is a guessing and cross your fingers thing when it comes to certain jobs.
I picked Demonologist. It said go observe demons. Of course it didn't say... use paper to write your notes down, etc.
I got Bowyer, and that was simple. Get wood, make bows. Easy.
I got fletcher, and it was... get wood and get metal ingots to make arrows.
While the reliance on other materials helps to foster an interactive job market, such materials do not always have an available supplier, leaving the player to choose either to buy another job to supply themselves with said materials or hope they can find someone selling said materials.
And the reason I bring this up is, had I known I was going to need job-created supplies; paper, metal ingots, etc, I may not have chosen the job I did.

Basically, this knowledge should be available to the players in a clear, easy to understand format... such as attached to the job description.
As an example, a simple How the job works (for Fletcher in this example) section can be added: By placing the appropriate wood planks and metal ingots in the fletching table the fletcher can attempt to create arrows. Level of success and types of metal used will dictate quality/quantity of arrows produced etc. Or (for Academics) ... observation of X and researching of Y requires empty pages in your inventory in order to complete the job.

While the job matrix is useful for researching, it is a mechanically unfriendly way to impart information to the players as it requires the player to jump to different pages to figure out what each job entails, material-wise.

I meant find out what creatures are deemed magical icly. not find out how to use paper >_> your not going to suddenly know what is and isn't a magical beast by taking the job, thats the point of the job. and then you can inform others icly aswell once you know.

if I knew sapphire knives wern't usable I wouldn't have taken inventor but then again you can still make unique stuff through mythal work. unfortunatly mythaled beer is not doable =( and there may well be a use for these items that have no follow up job system application and no stats...guess i'll find out sooner or later.

the best way to avoid issues is to take jobs that compliment eachother, like MG orchadar miller baker and cook.

but I agree there is a bit too much secrecy, but then again people who have taken the jobs can elaborate on it. for example, i'm not about to tell you what each ingot does with weaponsmithing, or how to make epic swords from scratch, but I know. find out icly, by asking people who know, or trial and error.

ed: and if in doubt don't take the job, or if you really think you screwed up ask for a wipe. example anything involving metal and your a druid, or a velsharoon undead hunter...with the acedemic jobs, try the monolith or something, one of those guys would know what a magical creature is, and if they don't try posting a pc thread message about it.

ed2: the reason imo why the npc's don't explain it is because someone would have to manually code each one into each npc for each job...there is a perfectly good job section <-- that way, be it a bit vague, and there are bugs.

Yeah, I agree that the complex creations should be discovered or sought out icly.
It's just the basic stuff I believe would be helpful.

And, you're right, it does seem to be the best way to work the job system, by taking the complimentary jobs. How well the job matches with character concept would have to be left to the discression of the player.

I wouldn't tag the info into the npcs, either. I'd tag that basic info on the jobs in the web page. Much easier to html in. :)

I wonder if there should be some kind of ic workers organization for workers to talk and meet up. I know there's the Trader's federation, but they're more interested in profit instead of craft, and won't let you be part of any other faction. (at least according to the npc I talked to).

Wrong. It's called the Amian Crafters & Traders Federation, not Just Traders.

And ICly within the ACTF I've never been told I'm not allowed to be apart of any other factions...

I originally thought (and wrote) Crafters and Traders, but when I did a quick look at the bottom of the forum at the faction list forums, it just said Traders, so I changed it.

As for the no other faction, there's a ACTF post in Forrstakkr. and when speaking with the NPC about joining, one of the conditions he lists is not be part of any other faction.
I'm just relating this to show where I'm getting that info from. I mean, if it's wrong, changed, etc, then Coolio! Sign me up! :) 'cause I was disapointed to read that as the first thing on the list of conditions.

For full reference in case it needs to be fixed, etc:

Location:
Server B - Forrstakkr: Amian Traders
NPC:
Amian Trader
Dialog:
AT: Hello, Madam! How can I help you?
1. Well, you could tell me what this place is, for instance.
AT: It's the headquarters fo the Amia Trader & Craftsmen Federation, Madam.
1. Traders! Excellent! I love mon- umm business! Can I become a member?
AT: Well, Madam, you must meet a few rerquirements, I am afrad.
1.You cannot be a member of any other faction
    2. You must have a rather neutral look on life
    3. You must have some feeling with trading or crafting
    4. You must have a decent amount of money in your coffers

(I stop at this point in the dialog as I'm already a member of a faction.)

When my character was brought in ICly, the character sponsoring him said that "the federation doesn't mind what you do in your own time, as long as it doesn't negatively affect the federation" because I mentioned wanting to join the Cordor Guards.
