Hail all! This is a call to any players interested in playing an evil Red Wizard of Thay. If you know anything about Red Wizards, they were once one of Amia's most infamous factions, and even today, their title stirs harsh words and the drawing of steel. Their track record on the island is just terrible and the mere mentioning of their name is met with reactions ranging from repulsed to downright hostile. If you like the idea of playing an evil megalomaniac wizard who comes from the even more evil distant nation of Thay, this might be the right faction for you. It is a faction that is great for generating conflict. We are striving to be open, displaying our colors proudly, and consequently getting hammered with combat all the time. As a Red Wizard, you will likely generate as much animosity from other PCs as you would by playing a Banite. If you don't like that kind of rp, then you might want to look elsewhere... Now chances are, none of your existing characters are eligible to become Red Wizards. This is due to the requirement of having to actually come from Thay (the homeland of the Red Wizards). So, you will likely have to make a new character just to join this faction. We are a faction of Nationality. It would be like joining a faction of all Cormyerians, for example. This is a faction of all Thayans. If you really want to join the faction with one of your existing characters, then consider joining the mercenary branch. Below, in the next post, is some background info on Thay and the Red Wizards to get yourself aquainted with what they're all about. Then, below that, in the third post, are character creation guidelines. ===> If you want to join, just send me a pm about your character, or find me in game w/ a tell. My main char (and leader of enclave) is Arzira Phetoril. We can discuss character concepts and see what you want to do. Our biggest requirement is that your character is actually from Thay. It is up to you to come up with a story reason for why your character is interested in traveling to Amia. Rumours of a group of Red Wizards attempting to re-establish Thayan presence, on their own initiative, is something to think about .

Red Wizards
The Red Wizards hold the power of life and death over their chosen land or enclave, and only other Red Wizards usually stop them from exercising that power at whim. Standing laws in Thay, and on Thavian soil, prevent Red Wizards from simply taking or seizing whatever they want from the common folk. Their main power is political, and those who regard themselves above such mortal and mundane concerns quickly find themselves exiled, or killed by The Red Wizards, and those outside their circles that do not respect the laws and culture often find themselves with a slave collar, or in a shallow grave.
In practice, a Red Wizard is likely to have many contacts, allies, and enemies, among the wizards and Red Wizards, with servants of various types and power levels. If a Red wizard is slain or disappears, his allies investigate. Although they most often assume that the disappearance is due to a rival and leave it at that, occasionally the allies try to find and destroy those responsible.
The Wizards of Thay grow up in a cutthroat environment of intrigue, competition, and cruelty. They have survived dangerous masters and evil rivals, and have experienced and witnessed magic that is prohibited by more ethical wizards. They are not fools, although some are Megalomaniacs and cannot see the flaws in their own plans. The environment in which they are raised and trained marked them dangerous opponents, and none should take them lightly.
Races and Cultures
Gnolls and Orcs are the most common non-human humanoids in Thay. They form the backbone of the Thayan armies, especially the gnolls, who are often placed in city garrisons to keep the populace in line. The less-controllable orcs are usually employed as shock tropps.
With the zulkir's current policy of peaceful trade, the orcs often sit idle, itching for a fight of some sort. If one doesn't come quickly enough, they end up rioting amongst themselves. To keep this violence from overflowing into the rest of the population, the Red Wizards have set up a regular series of gladitorial games. Orcs, gnolls, and other violent humanoids are pitted against one another in blood matches for the enjoyment of the ever-growing crowds of spectators.
Goblins and halflings are also not uncommon in Thay, although they are almost always slaves. Their lives may not be as violent as those of the gnolls and orcs, but they are just as short. Tieflings and other planetouched creatures can be found here as well, although these rare folk are judged more by their human ancestry than their physical appearance.
In Addition to nonhumans, Thay is home to two distinct human cultures: the Rashemi and the Mulan.
Mulan
Mulhorandi blood runs thick in the veins of the Mulan. These are the descendants of renegades who rebelled against the Mulhorandi Empire 400 years ago. and since those fateful days, they have retained the power they wrestled from their distant masters. Nearly all the Red Wizards are of Mulan extraction. There are few exceptions, and most of these pass themselves off as the children of Mulan parents.
The Mulan people are tall and slim, sometimes to the point of being gaunt. Their skin is sallow, and they usually remove what little body hair they have by means magical or mundane. They wear intricately designed tattoos in place of hair, usually on their bare skulls and where their eyebrows were. These tattoos often represent dragons, demons, devils, and other creatures of ancient evil. They are extremely stylized, sometimes to the point of being cryptic runes or even abstract signs. Many Red Wizards use tattoo magic, and the fashion of tattooing arose from this. Even those without the power of the Red Wizards wish to look as though they do.
Almost all nobles in Thay are of Mulan descent, although not all Mulan are nobles. At worst lowborn Mulan are free farmers or artisans, although many seek power that does not depend on their family's wealth, becoming bureaucrats, soldiers, or priests. For those with the aptitude, the path of the Red Wizard is open. In fact, most Red Wizards come from Mulan Families of relatively humble means (although high-born Red Wizards have the advantage of personal wealth and noble alliances to aid their advancement when they complete their training).
Purpose in amia: To aquaire wealth and information which can be funneled back to Thay.
[EDIT] - Changed requirements under Red Wizard ==> Specializing in a school is now a requirement.

There are actually four separate branches of the Enclave. To join the Enclave, you should decide if you want to make a Red Wizard, a Thayan Knight, a Burning Brazier, or a Mercenary.
Below is a brief description of each, what requirements you must satisfy to obtain that position.
Red Wizard __________________________________________
Description: A Red Wizard maintains the highest level of authority in the Enclave. Only a Red Wizard may serve as Khazark or rule on the council. Even a Red Wizard apprentice, who does not serve on the council, wields more authority than any non-Red Wizard. They are very dangerous, being both intelligent and willing to practice magic that other wizards find unethical.
Required race: Human (Mulan) [Remember to select 'human' from the list of races during character creation, then, under SUBRACE, type in Mulan.]
Alignment: Any nongood
Future Build: At least 15 levels in wizard (no Sorc!). Specialization in a school is required.
---------------------------------------------------
Thayan Knight _____________________________________________
Description: A Thayan Knight is a highly trained soldier dedicated to the safety and protection of a Red Wizard. They often begin training very early and have their minds conditioned to serving the Mageocracy with the utmost loyalty. A Thayan Knight is proud, and treats his duty to protect his masters religiously. Often, a Thayan Knight is assigned to a particular Red Wizard for a set amount of time. They are trained to take, rather than give, orders. They wield no official authority, but to serve as one is considered an honor.
Required Race: Human (Mulan)
Alignment: Any nongood, any nonchaotic
Class: Fighters make great knights. Multiclassing rogue is fine. Weapon masters and black guards make good prestige class choices. Barbarian levels are not allowed, as they are too undisciplined.
---------------------------------------------------
Burning Brazier _____________________________________________
Description: Clerics of Kossuth. Clad in full plate and wielding flaming spiked chains, the servants of the fire Primordial have commanded great respect in Thay ever since the Salamander War, where Kossuth granted Thay assistence in taking the southern Province of Priador. Since then, Kossuth has become one of the most popular religions in Thay.
Race: Human (Mulan).
Alignment: Any nongood.
Class: At least 15 lvls of Cleric. Focus with a heavy flail is preferable, as it is the closest thing to a spiked chain in NWN.
---------------------------------------------------
Mercenary _____________________________________________
Description: Simply, hired thugs and sellswords eager to make profit. Mercenaries are hired anywhere and everywhere. They can be of mostly any race and nationality, as well as any profession. Mercenaries sign a contract with a set term of aggreement to serve the Enclave should it call upon their services. During that time, mercenaries are entitled to Thayan magical wares at significant discounts. (Note, if you are not interested in making a new PC and want to just jump right in with an existing character, this is the way to do it. Contact us ICly : D)
Race: Any.
Alignment: Any nongood.
Class: Any. Obviously classes that impose 'good only' alignments, such as Paladins, are out.

Thanks Svenks! : P. I figured its worth a shot. Normally I hate the idea of OOC recruiting, but seeing as how most PCs don't come from Thay, its kind of hard to recruit off the street >.<
This is more of a 'players looking for other players interested in rw rp' kind of post. That and its just easier to make a new char from scratch who is a Red Wizard, rather than trying to force an existing character concept to match one. The latter really doesn't work.

You cannot become a Red Wizard of Thay if you're not a Specialist Wizard. It is a requirement for the class and the position, the two of which are inextricably intertwined.

There's already an Enclave. Either join them or make some sort or rogue Thayvian group to topple them.

Its the same enclave >.<.
Leadership has been switched. HoA and Red Wizards are splitting. In the private forums, the name "Horsemen and the Thayan Enclave" is a bit misleading...
trust me, this is the Thayan Enclave.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
And Tormak is right, I should edit the requirements. One of the penalties of being a Red Wizard, if you take the PrC, is that you lose an extra school of magic (ouch!). Its rough, but RWs are based on school specialization. Ie, each of the eight zulkirs are based on a separate school of magic, as there are eight schools.

Previous Enclave had a sorc leader, which shouldn't be able to work. That was the one that was a part of the HoA.
It could maybe work as a splitoff faction, but not a traditionalist one.
And before that, well....pretty much all their members have either joined HoA or this one.

There are some cases where you can be a position or in an organization without being a member of the PrC, but the Red Wizards aren't one of them. All Red Wizards are Red Wizards. It's a requirement.

Tero, he means 'third RW faction'. I just got it myself.
But to clarify (someone jump in and correct me if I'm wrong), there is only one trying to establish currently, and thats this one.
TaliaZallinalla is giving it over. (switching leadership). I don't want to say too much for metagaming possibilites.
Only other possibility is the one attached to HoA, (again correct me if I'm wrong), but RWs are splitting from HoA currently. The one attached to HoA had a sorc leader...which wasn't very traditional.

I think a faction about rogue wizards or either some sort of Thayvian 'council' of wizards or whatever you like to call it flies better. The official RW's take too much requirements. I'd go so far in saying an 'official' Enclave of Amia should be controlled by an NPC/DM like pretty much any of the official FR factions, and the players being apprentices like Tormak says. But that requires work for DMs/Devs.

As it stands here,
the idea is that RWs are coming to the island, on their own initiative, to build an Enclave, restore economic ties, and make a mark on the island (among other things)
Overall, trying to get the attention of Thay back at home.
Currently, the Enclave does not receive official backing from Thay. Thats often how it starts, though. RWs are known for great personal ambition, and do often take their own initiative in making something afar at their own risk. If they fail, they are shunned by their masters at home for acting on their own. If they succeed, they are often instead rewared for their ambition and their initiative.
Least, that seems how it goes in the novels.

I believe in Storm of Zehir in NwN 2, there is a lone Red Wizard and his enclave in Neverwinter City. Its just a single building and he has like, a single apprentice and a few gnoll guards. And he's just chillin' out on his own. If probed about his history, he even reveals that he 'came here to escape from home', implying he has little ties to Thay.
Such is not uncommon, I don't think. I had the impression it was the same here. If that goes far enough to the point of a name change, maybe we should consider it...right now, we've low membership and were just trying to get the ball rolling. If enough people feel like we should change the title to something like Thayan Trade Company, or similar, we can do that.

The red wizard enclave that she is talking about is the same one i "valkin" and sera of the horsemen did lead, first me then sera took control when i left due to RL issues, when i came back i tried to help fix it up and now there is a new leader taken over this post is to get people interested in making new red wizard characters or characters to rp within the faction. Valkin is a red wizard, his history is such his rp is such however he had been rebuilt 9x or something now and so his class are all over the place, he considers himself a red wizard his history had him schooled in thay and he fled hear to build a better life for himself, however if the prestige class was in nwn i would take it in a heart beat. Tho i do agree anyone fresh out of the academy of thay should be a wiz/human/ and a specialist, and when you are in amia if you rebuild du to IC reasons so be it. hope to get into some more RP with this as time moves on tho glad i am not leading it anymore lol

I'd like to reiterate for Tormak here - if you're a Red Wizard, you're a Red Wizard. If your class has been altered to anything other than a Red Wizard's specialty, you are no longer considered by any faction, a Red Wizard - just like a paladin is stripped of his favour of the deity, you are stripped of yours from the community.
You can consider your PC a red wizard, sure, but if RP generated - your PC would have no sway on any Red Wizard Enclave decisions.
That is just how I see the scenario, though.

Just a question here on Quote: I'd like to reiterate for Tormak here - if you're a Red Wizard, you're a Red Wizard. You can consider your PC a red wizard, sure, but if RP generated - your PC would have no sway on any Red Wizard Enclave decisions. So let's say I have a wizard who has specialized on a school and is a red wizard. Now if this Red Wizard becomes a palemaster, for exmaple, would he still be considered Red Wizard even though has a other prestige class as well? I myself consider him being necromancy focused Red wizard who has taken it to the "next level". I would like DM answer on this, thank you.

Once you take the class "Red Wizard" (or in some way meet the requirements on Amia since you can't take the PrC) then you are a Red Wizard, period. You can take Palemaster, do anything, you are now a Red Wizard.

And by 'some way meeting those prerequisites' on Amia,
I take it to mean (correct me if I'm wrong):
Be nongood alignment
Human (Mulan) race
Wizard with a school of specialization
A total of three metamagic feats or item creation feats or a combination thereof.
As well as 8 ranks in spell craft.
You normally had to be 5th lvl before you could start taking RW lvls, in the PnP game.

I was referring to this statement: TaliaZalinNalla wrote: Valkin is a red wizard, his history is such his rp is such however he had been rebuilt 9x or something now and so his class are all over the place, he considers himself a red wizard And I read it as "He is altered so much you could not consider him by mechanics a read wizard, but his heart is there." In this case, no. But as Tormak said: TormakSaber wrote: Once you take the class "Red Wizard" (or in some way meet the requirements on Amia since you can't take the PrC) then you are a Red Wizard, period. You can take Palemaster, do anything, you are now a Red Wizard. And yes, Sape - I believe that would be a viable assumption to make.

I'm pretty sure most of this has been argued previously in the original Red Wizard Faction thread.
Use the Search engine, search up Red Wizard or Thayvian in GD. You'll find it. I'd link you myself but I'm running on dial up pretty much, and the search takes a few years to load up.

Am rather interested. Have had one in the works for a while now, but am having recent internet issues. See: Zeke Menong. Specialization: Illusion Keep me posted.

Sure thing. Catch me on sometime while I'm playing on Amia. My character is 'Red Wizard' Arzira Phetoril. A Thayan Knight would be really cool, as we don't have any of those. Illusion is a great school to specialize in. Its the one I chose for Arzira Were gonna have a meeting this coming Friday, too, so it'd be cool if you could get in by then. As long as they're built to the specifications above, it should be fine. Actually, my brother, and a friend of mine, and myself are all planning to make new faction PCs tonight, if all goes well. So if you do get your characters made tonight, we could have a Thayan Hunting party : D. We are going to be on around 9:00 pm central US time. Regards!

A note I thought I would drop in here because it is extremely lore relevant, adnd very important to nay faction looknig to roleplay people from Thay. I noticed it when I saw your Thayan Knights.
No one in Thay wears red. Wearing red in Thay if you are not a Red Wizard is punishable by immediate execution by the first Red Wizard who sees you. I assume this would transfer over to any enclaves and factions based around them.
It is a minor detail, but for authentic Thayans, it is an incredibly important detail. No Thayan Knight would b caught dead wearing red. Or he would be... caught dead.

How about hair? If you are Thayvian and you have hair its a mark of a slave I believe?

Don't the clerics of Kossuth also wear red as religious garb because of that entire fire theme? So what I'm asking is whether the no wearing red rule applies to the Thayan Kossuth clerics. And yeah I'm thinking about making a Thayan PC myself now, toss up between cleric of Kossuth and Red Wizard.

The rule applies. I hardly think your god will strike you down in firey vengance just because you choose not to wear his colour. The gods really dont' give a flying toss about colours and such mortal things. Its players that tend to place such importance on colour assocation with gods.

Thayan Red Wizards remove body hair and have tattooes instead, if your not a red wizard.. then perhaps you could go with hair, however, I don't think Thayans would take you as a fashionable person and rarely would people want to stand out as much as possible from the main... culture? (Not sure of the word here)
Plus RW's wouldn't most likely start attacking cleric of Kossuth, on a matetr of colors, because of the service Kossuth did for Thay. He is in high favour there!

The gods really dont' give a flying toss about colours and such mortal things. Its players that tend to place such importance on colour assocation with gods. It isn't so much the god I'm thinking of, but rather how restricting a religious order from wearing their ceremonial colours would quite probably be a sore point between the Kossuth priesthood and the Red Wizards. Religious organisations tend to get a bit miffed if any of their customs are infringed upon and if the priests of Kossuth are influential in Thay then I imagine this isn't the sort of thing the Red Wizards can ignore. But anyway, if no red then what colours do the Thayan Kossuthians wear? If they are an organised religion in Thay then they probably go along a single colour scheme. If FR lore doesn't elaborate on Kossuthian colours, I don't think it would be too much of a stretch if Kossuth priests wore red part of their garb if they are indeed revered there. But then that's just me. Nysor wrote: Are you telling me Solrend can have a bitter enemy serving his god?! Yes!! Possibly. ^.^

You ask me, Kossuthans in Thay wear red, but they do not wear Red. They do not wear the Red.
Take that in whatever way you like.

Take that in whatever way you like. You've blown my mind. Do you think pink would count as the Red in Thay? Kossuthians do not wear Red, or if they do, it is high ranking ones who have permission from the Red Wizards. Or this is what I gather from he books. It's an understood agreement. Kossuth is the "State Religion" of Thay, and quote pg 162. Unapproachable East; Thay; Religion; "Clerics of the Firelord are among the very few people a Red Wizard cannot harm or kill with impunity". This doesn't necessarily mean clerics of Kossuth are revered, simply that they hold very high station in Thay. Quote: yes nobility only, just like red wizard wearing red, if a non noble is balded its a death sentence or at lest severe punishment, but this is just in the major city's were the nobles live etc. Incorrect. Most all Mulan in Thay shave their bodyhair and their head hair. This is largely done by the Red Wizards as a way to facilitate tattoo magic. The common folk (largely made up of disenfranchised Mulan, and very largely, nationalized Rahsemi) tend to shave their head and bodies as well, emulating the nobles of Thay. Wealthy Rashemi will often also tattoo themselves to emulate the Mulan even more. Hair is not the mark of a slave, it's just a cultural trend to shave it. n.b. I learned a ton about Thay because my PnP campaign takes place in it.
