In the time I did get to play, one thing stood out to me above all others.
Any time I was in a group with others, and we encountered another character that was either shifted into some strange creature, or a mage shifted into a Dragon, there was only one reaction.
"Oh, look at that, a giant red dragon....*yawn* It must be a shifter or a mage."
My little Kobold ran screaming behind a rock and almost wet himself when the Dragon came near.
I can't tell you how angry that reaction from the others made me. How it ruined the entire RP by everyone assuming that this was just another normal person shifted into a monstrous shape.
I understand that in Amia, there are a lot of mages and shifters that run around in scary monster forms, but when someone comes upon them and just blows them off, it completely ruins any good RP that could be had if you treated them like a REAL monster.
There are plenty of monsters just running around Amia, I know they are scripted to stay in their areas but still, why wouldnt one or two wonder off sometime? I had a lot of fun being fearful of this massive Dragon, and im sure the mage playing it was pleasantly surprised by the change, since the group I was with completely blew her off.
End rant...

Yes, because giant red dragons just sit around chilling in the forest acting completely non dragon-like, speakin gnot draconic, not eating elves and ge-
Look, if you're going to shift into things and not act like the creature you're going to be picked out as a shifter. Period. Deal with it.

Most of the time, these things just act uncharacteristic to the real thing, or just are in places that make little to no sense for them to be. You don't find them in caves, or guarding hordes, or eating people. Like Tormak said, you find them in the forest, or a common place with people-- many of which would easily be able to kill said dragon. For a long time, these things have just... become very banal, and unsurprising. Yes, it's disappointing, but it's part of the culture.
I'd try to look at it more ICly. If someone asked my PC why she wasn't scared out of her mind about a red dragon, or a green shifted dragon, and instead went, "Hey asshole, stop destroying the forest with your fat ass so you can pretend to be tough"... well, she could most certainly come up with a very IC and logical answer, that wouldn't be metagaming at all.
That said, RP your kobold as you like. Make him skittish and scared of monsters, and give that scenario a little flavor. I agree that it may very well be appreciated.

I already gave you my opinion when you impotently kvetched to me while I was the DM in-game. But I'll also add something else here - you're approaching this wrong if you want others to change the way they do things in order to make your puzzle piece fit.
Step up to the plate, son, and invent some non-mechanical , non-module-change way to make it work.

I never had any issues with this when playing my shifter. I never had the issue 3 years ago, I never had an issue after the shifter change either.
Playing a shifter is all about shifting into something and acting the part of it, if you want to slip under the radar of suspicion.
Try shifting into another human shape, a halfling shape or even a drow..
Or an animal that fits the forest area and acts as one..
It's rather easy, actually when you act the part and don't stand out as something not behaving as it should.
Heck I even ended up with my shifter hunted by PCs because they thought it was a DM created animal that they decided to hunt. It's great fun when you act the part..

I agree with Tormak. It would be nice if people trying to be dragons openly would pick the right dragon for the location. Source books are a shifter's best friend. Greens like the Woods. Blues chill out in the Desert. Reds make the most sense devouring Orcs in the hills of the Northern frontier or chilling around the Skull Crags. Given the amount of readily available 'food' in each location, spotting a dragon of the wrong color type just hanging out along the main road, not far from a road warden screams to me: Punk shifter. Then again I play a sorcerer and a Kobold, two people that should know those silly things are out of place and have IC justification for "Pfft." ing as they pass.

I normally assume if I have time to identify a creature as a dragon before my character is consumed in flame, it's a shifter. And honestly, they're far too numerous in Amia for the reaction to be the same every time. Peek-a-boo is fun when you're 3 months old, by the time you're 25 it really doesn't have the same effect.
But I've been in situations in the past where DMs have made normal shifter-ey 'monsters' (sometimes a bear) with the name of a popular shifter PC, just to gauge reactions. Folks are fooled by it; the mauling that comes afterwards is a lesson well learned.

Animal forms in the wilderness, I make it a point not to metagame. If you're a badger or something and a good distance away from my PC, that's normal. Hell, if someone actually emotes doing regular animal things, I try my damnest to pretend they're not "there", because my PC would likely ignore them. But if you constantly move towards my PC or repeatedly invade personal space after he moves away, he is either going to think something is up (you're a spying shifter and he's paranoid like that anyway from past experience) or you're a regular animal being bothersome. In either case, expect to be hostiled and listen up for your "out". If you want to be treated like an animal in animal form, act like a damn animal. You're either a druid or a shifter, in both cases you should probably know what that means.
As for dragon forms not being taken seriously... well when you're a Red talking to the half-celestial and walking about going "RAWR" in the middle of Amia Frontier... it's a little hard to take you seriously. Chromatics don't play with their food. They may occasionally have intercourse with it, but at the very least they don't parade around and stuff in the open.

i was partied with a shifter before in cariagh. my pc had never seen a shifter before (and still doesnt know she has) and it made for quite the fun trip. I led the little red dragon all the way to the Bugh, and all of a sudden I was followed by a white dragon. Upon asking why it was a different color, it insisted I was crazy and my helm must have blocked my vision, and that its ice was so cold it burnt skin. The player always made sure to shift out of LoS of me, be it behind me a ways or obstructed by a tree or up a cliff.
BUT if this had been done with another of my PCs, who has seen shifters before and has seen lots of kinds of shifts, my reaction would have been much different. while my PC in case 1 was helping a little baby dragon who decided to not eat her, the PC in case 2 would have known it was a shifter and may very well have killed it for trying to pull a fast one. So you cant really fault people who know shifters are about and what they can do when they dont make a big deal about a common shifter shape hanging around the forest. Even if it is a red dragon.

I never have a problem with people ICly thinking I'm a shifter. I almost always try to play the part of the creature I'm shifted into. One of my favorite is gargoyle. If you shift into gargoyle and use the "beg" emote from the rest menu, you become perfectly still and look like an actual statue. I was even mistaken for being a placeable once. I don't know why, but I always have fun with this.

As long as shifters don't complain when my characters is about to kill them for being annoying animals, chromatic wyrmlings or other evil creatures, I have no issue.
It's the scolding that comes when he acts like any sane human being would around a dangerous and evil creature that gets to me.

Red dragon in a forest, when the only red dragons my character have ever seen near that area were shifters and mages, and it's unnbelievable that such would be my character's assumption?

Really if my druid spots a manticore, Rakshasa, Diretiger, Wyrmling and whatnot in the forest... her first reaction is "oh great another shifter"
Why? Easy... because 99% of the time it is.
If you are convincing to be a real monster, expect to be slain.
If you are unconvincing and abuse your powers (in opinion of my druid) by sitting around in the forest as a red dragon to give a scare to people... exptect to be slain too btw.

Well it is a sensitive topic.
You basically need to filter out the real metagame and the "logical assumption"
1. If your character shapeshifts into a creature which is uncommon or illogical to be there everyone can rightfully assume you are a shifter
2. If you are shapeshifted into a creature which fits to the surroundings but doesn't behave like this creature at all everyone can rightfully assume you are a shifter
3. If... you are shapeshifted into a creature that fits the surroundings -and- behaves accordingly and someone says "Oh a shifter" give him an ooc tell or contact a DM
An exampe for Nr. 3: You are in a forest, shapeshifted into a raven and sitting on a branch, doing not much but an occasionally "caw"... noone can rightfully point at you and say "Oh look, it's a shifter"
Same for shifting into a child and for example playing in Cordor.... you know... things like that. Things which actually fit and make sense.
That would be real metagaming. The other thing is just a natrual reaction due to experience and likelyness.

I have to agree with Tormak and the 'logical assumption' folks, really. The other day I was with someone outside Bendir walking to the forest, and we spotted a bear in the road. Logically, a bear could wander that close given the nearby woods, so we RPed it as a real bear which the shifter RPed back quite well. It was only a little bit of RP, but it was rather fun lol
And to be honest, the way OP played their kobold was perfect. I can see that a kobold (and some other races) might freak out at first suddenly seeing a big ol' dragon, so that's nice RPing. Funny imagining a few people going 'Eh, shifter.. hey where'd he go?' as the kobold runs for his life lol

It's always going to be hard to have people live up to your expectations of RP. Also, how much do you take into account how long those characters have been around? Their background? Some of it might be meta-gaming a bit, but often it's best to roll with it unless it's blatant and RP killing. Reacting to the way other people DON'T react is just more RP for you perhaps. "Guys, it's a dragon! RUN! *looks back at non-running people* Hey? Why aren't you running? Why isn't it eating you?"
My own character is currently just discovering he has shifter abilities. He's never seen all these creatures. The first time someone changed into a dragon in front of him he fell off the short drop cliff he was sitting near even when he saw them change. Hell, I've been asking people if there were true dragons around because he's afraid he won't know when he runs into one before he's eaten.
All this is my desire on how to RP what my character knows and reacts. I could have ignored most of it and gone, "Well I know you're not REALLY a dragon, so I'm not surprised you are one now." It just wouldn't have fit my persona I have been crafting. On the other hand, if someone thought my RP was silly because of it would I have been wrong then?

The wyrmling shifters in the forest is a great assumption if you're a mage with a pseudo dragon. Actually had a couple people yelling at my wizard's pseudo dragon to "unshift".
Sometimes you *are* a green dragon and you *are* eating someone, and they still go "Oh hey, how you doing? That lunch?". You just roll with it and realize no matter how you act, no matter the location, there will always be people who see the name tag over your head and realize there's rules you have to follow before mauling them. So it's smack talking time for them!
Such is Amia; roll with it.

Really this is just another one of those extremely subjective topics... Will my Kobold, impulsive and gutless by nature, run and hide or even bow to and revere a dragon on sight? Probably. Will my well-traveled mage, experienced with Amian weirdness, see a red dragon seated quietly in the woods and recognize it as a shifter? Most definitely. When I'm playing my ranger, and I spot a monster acting strangely or simply being out of place--and yes, OOC AND IC this is a shifter 99% of the time--I tend to stalk them in a manner suiting their form until the shift ends. Why? Big game hunter. When a shifted character speaks, revealing themselves as a shifted PC, she still remains cautiously aloof of them; the distance between her palm and the hilt of a dagger depending on the size of the form. TL;DR You don't have to act bored around shifted dragons to look cool.

my answer to anyone asking if im a shifter while shifted, is something along the lines of lol.
I remember a certain incident where a fairly well known player was in balor form running down the coast, we had just stopped to camp (with fires and cooking and all) and suddenly we are confronted by it, pretty much everyone froze, and by use of logic we determined it could be a shifter/polymorphed wizard, since our heads we're still attached and there was a balor within five feet.
use logic, and if your answer is "*yawn* its a shifter etc", or the worst one I personally saw where I was acting as a players cow... (poly potions yet again) and was dispelled because "who walks around with cows" uh, farmers do.
never had anyone come directly up and go "hey its you the hin" while in minataur form or anything, but my honest responce to such would be "haw haw, who are you?"
ed: if people see you shift its a slightly different story.

Dragons are pretty easy to ignore because, unless I'm mistaken, there are no "real" dragons on the Amian Isles anymore and I'd assume that's pretty common knowledge. Therefore, any dragons seen on the Isle must be shifted individuals. Makes sense to me. The thing that gets me is the more common shapes of creatures in the module. Kobold, Mindflayer, etc.

At least one dragon which still lives on Amia comes to my mind... however, yes they are rare and don't likely prance around in the forest or play peek-a-boo with adventurers.

Nope. One's in the Abyss (which while part of the Amia module, isn't actually Amia) and the other isn't really a dragon.

I welcome the people that attack on sight. It's how most people would react and it brings fun RP, provided all the PvP rules are heeded of course. I once had someone see me and instantly hostile me. He emoted *attacks* and I emoted *flees*. I could have just as easily fought and neither of us would have complained. I've done similar things before like attack a PC kobold in the kobold caves and it's always worked. Just do something like that and everything should be fine.
My shifter is a coward at heart. He plays at being a big, scary monster and will try to act the part and make everyone believe he is the real deal. But usually when he sees 5 well armed, angry adventurers with a battle cry on their lips charging him, he will unshift into a less threatening form or simply run away. A natural 30 wisdom has to stand for something when even an orc with 8 wisdom and 6 intelligence knows when it's time to bail or die.

There are at least four I can think of, yet of these four; zero actually use their 'true form' because it's the quickest route to death possible given how many people think dragons are good for hoard looting.

Go to the Orc caves 'n make yourself a lair, make the newbie adventurers pay you tribute via either gold or you must eat one of them to let the rest pass.

For the original poster...
If you're going to hold others up to your own standards of roleplay and how they -should- react, and also let it effect your time here, you will be a very unhappy person, and it will be your fault.
Don't take offense to this, it's just how I feel whenever I see these "I act this way and so should you cuz my way is better/correct" threads. You have a point, but I don't think it needed a forum topic, and it inadvertently called out the players involved who did nothing but react how their characters would react, as opposed to how you felt they should.

In my personal opinion. I am the single best roleplayer on this server - and you all should really try to be more like me.
That's all.
They aren't being rude to you Soviet. They're just pointing out the "You should because I do" mentality of your post. We understand your pain in this, but you'll never be as good an RPer as I am.

I don't feel like I was being rude, and I'm sorry if you did. It wasn't my intention.
But I do feel like expecting others to act a certain way and being upset when they don't and then calling them out on the forum for it , is rude.

It's not like I'd be demanding a million gold when they likely have <500 on the average adventurer to wander into the Orc Caves. Could use the Blood Moons instead, just figured it'd be an interesting change of pace for veterans with new characters aswell as an enthralling experience for entirely new players. I'm definitely going to be doing this with a new character concept I have in mind.

That's not possible sir.
I haven't even opened NWN in a month, I have been too busy with my school work.

You haven't even been registered on the forum for a month!
Back on topic, it'd be nice if people acted more surprised, yes, but I imagine they have their reasons / have grown used to as some people suggested, as it seems like a pretty daily experience for such rare creatures to be in such an odd place.
