It should be fixable, though, I mean - there's got to be a hook somewhere in there that can be used to fix it properly. Though there's also got to be other, underlying, errors as well because that doesn't cover why an AoE Mord's will take more than two non-breach spells.

So far liking the changes, are they perfect? No, but aiming to balance is better than no change.

Only things I semi dislike:
Dev crit, don't see this as a nerf really. Knockdown plus the effects? Imo if you can't kill someone as a dev critter in 4 hits your doing it wrong so the effects are whatever. Concern with drows though with light blindness, and darkness glitchs.

GS I never use but find the duration little to short unless a speed increase is given. 100% spell failure great. So the BoT page is useless though

Great.
Just great.

I am now stuck with a character who wasn't exactly a powerhouse before, doing sweet fuck all in terms of damage but at least being reasonably tough, doing even less damage than before. Down to 3 attacks per round, 2 damage less with divine favour. That'll let me hit for, oh, say 20 damage on a hit, 3 times a round. If I hit that many, that is, because I've also lost the second full BAB attack...

You say the sky isn't falling, it is. What this does is completely change the playing field, heavily in favour of melee builds. What the hell ever happened to good old AD&D? Where did people get the queer idea that casters are supposed to be balanced? I don't mind them being balanced either, but that means having a fair fighting chance, which at this point I just might have against a household cat. Not sure, how many attacks does the cat get?

And then I get people complaining that the last thing going for this char should be nerfed too. HipS.
Right, please go whine somewhere else. I'd like to be left with a char that is at least able to get away from things with her 10 SD levels, because GS is useless for that as well now.

Do not expect to see my cleric in PvP again. Ever. It wasn't fun before, it's not even funny now.

I don't know, with Dwagin's suggestion of an Expeditious Retreat-like effect being added with the GS effect it seems like a very good escape button.

Yeees the sky is falling.
The concepts of some people's characters are now unbalanced, doesn't match their intentions, is something entirely else, wrong, False, and just chaotic.

You don't go and make that big of a change, Mainly because it's an old game and it was 'Fairly' OK as it was and that we've come to agree and understand the laws and fundamental basics of it.

Here's what happened.

    # A - The first powerhouse chars got nerfed. BG/Paladin save whoring Sorcs and Similar.
    # B - Now another type of characters roamed the field as the 'new Top-Dogs', and immediately they need nerfing.
    # C? - What will happen next, What concept will be on the list of degrading and shaming for having taken the place as 'Number One'.

*Groan*
You Did 'To Much!'

Ps - It's suppose to be dramatic.

Paladins, Barbarians, or HiPSTERs.

It sucks. I don't like it. But I'll have to learn to deal with it. I was thinking about taking a break from NWN to focus more on school again.. So now at least I can look forward to coming back when the dust has settled and have a good idea of what builds to base new characters around.

And in the end, we'll all be exactly the same. Plinking away at eachother with exactly the same effect. Because it'll be balanced.

Ugh.

There's no slippery slope here. For the most part, these changes have been discussed for years. Changing GS or Dev Crit has always been a pipedream for many, and the spam of Heal potions and how it ridicules healing priests has been an acknowledged issue forever. Now somebody finally took the initiative an organized a balance team to go through these issues thoroughly. They've been mulling over these things behind closed doors for almost a year now, IIRC.

I don't see how the cooldown on raising makes your cleric any less cool. It's time to prepare the proper ceremonies and pray for the expensive and powerful spell that you're about to cast. Five minutes to role-play after a PvP is not a punishment. It's a treat. Finally some idiot won't run up immediately and raise the dead with a slip of paper like it was nothing. You're not supposed to be casting it several times in the middle of combat, no matter how good of a healer you are.

Yeah, I know.. I'm feeling a lot of butt-hurt too.
But it helps me break my Amia addiction. I've been needing to stop. I just have to tell myself this is even more big of a deal than it is! ..My favorite character won't be able to do nearly the same things as she was before! She won't be 1/10th the threat she was and now she has to fade into the background. People respond to incentives.. I just needed a bad one.

Yes. I'm glad balancing is an issue now. But I don't think it's something we're going to get right the first time. Or have. Although I don't understand the fuss about the Devy changes.

Edit: Or the raise/heal changes. And I have come to deal with the Tenser changes. It wasn't like my mage was meant for melee anyways,

Not really.

1.69 was a complete crap-fest. From a coding point of view, Bioware rushed it and left bugs all through the game. Stupid little bugs that never should have existed.

So with that +2 you're losing you did 22 before, right? And gee, it must be nice to have 2 full BAB attacks let alone three. I don't know what that's like. I just play an epic WM whose entire point is melee damage and can do nothing else at all like cast 9 full levels fo seplls full heal when I want, buff, disable, attack entire groups from range lay down full arrays of status effects and MANIPULATE RELAITY AT A WHIM.

Stop being so over fucking dramatic. Holy shit. "Amia's NWN" hasn't been "NWN" for years, bro. Those summons you like? That mythal system? Thae spell changes we've had since Arelith? That's not "NWN".

These changes were sitting in the pipeline for literally years. All I really have to say is "cry more. Deal with it. If it's actually broken and not people just whining, it will get fixed."

n.b. this posts are made from the perspective of me as aplayer not me as a DM.

It's not those changes I'm pissed about. Those I agree with up to a point. The change to Dev might have been overly harsh, and a damage effect might have been more theme-appropriate, but I suppose that couldn't be helped.

However, it is the compound nerfs to clerics in general that makes some character concepts absolutely unplayable. For a character that already did a low amount of damage, losing a full quarter of that damage is HUGE. In fact, I lose more because one of the better short-term buffs got changed too. Then there's the fact that in a PvP situation I can no longer actually buff up to make use of even my diminished abilities, and you may be starting to see my problem.

Clerics got both a nerf to their power, a nerf to their supporting power AND a nerf to their ability to deploy that power. The only way to make a melee cleric work at this point is to be less of a cleric, and the only way to make the hybrid build that I've been running for a year not suck now is to rebuild to something else. Shynt'iira has 10 shadowdancer levels mostly for RP, and I love the RP it generates, but at this point, particularly combined with the +2 ECL for being Drow which is now more painful than ever, she couldn't fight her way out of a wet paper bag.

The thing that pisses me off most, however, is the way in which the entire playing field has been ploughed up. More power to the builders, and screw those of us who just want to RP our characters and just not have to die or run away every single time a fight breaks out.

Tormak, don't even start with me you self righteous prick...

You are the one that always calls for people to build according to their RP. You are the one that complains most loudly when someone builds to gain power.

You are now pretty much flaming me for doing exactly what you have wanted people to do all this time. Shynt'iira is a pure RP build. She has never been very powerful in either PvP or PvE, simply because of abilities that I wanted her to have for the sake of the character. As far as RP goes, the build is awesome, but right now I am sick and tired of having to put up with all kinds of shit simply because she can barely defend herself.

The only thing these balance changes do is make weak builds even weaker.

3.5 DnD is great when you're sitting around a table.

You know what? DnD 3.5 SUCKS ASS when you've got 100 players constantly interacting. It mightily blows chunks, because it is not balanced. It was not made balanced because 3.5 DnD was not made with PvP in mind. "Ah,!" you go. "Amia isn't made with PVP ni mind either, this is an RP server not an arena server, Tormak, you idiot person who should be fired!" "No, you silly player. Roleplay can also involve PvP, and it's a lot less fun for you if some nerd with a gooby powerbuild can spam heal pots over and over and use GS as HIPS and spam Bigby on you to kill you endlessly, isn't it?" "Yeah, I suppose so." "Isn't it a bit weird that a cleric can effortlessly buff to become better than any dedicated melee fighter could hope to be along with still hvaving 9 full levels of spells and all the capability that comes with it?" "That is a bit off, tormak. I see wat you're saying there."

Welcome to multiplayer, gents.

Nah. your posts are at least reasonable. Look, it's one thing to not like the changes (I am sad with Dev. I have a Dev player. Torin is my main. It is the only reason he could do anything in PvP because his AB is low compared to the AC clercics and dex mages and etc get, along with spells and scrolls. I am sad with GS. I have a wizard. GS is useless for him now. He is a palemaster.), but it is another thing to go "the world is ending, the world is ending, the serer is going to DIE!" over it. And that's what i'm lampooning and lampshading. It's all really silly.

You're a cleric SD and you're complaining? You literally have the full suite of cleric buffs, AND an unnerfed HIPS and you're complaining?

And all those buffs don't do shit for me, because I can't actually use them.

The spell DC is not high enough to have an effect. No spell penetration, weak melee damage, no sneaks. You do the math.

HipS is the only reason she doesn't die every time a pigeon attacks her.

I kind of wish cutting everything NWN and starting from scratch with classes, spells, ect. was plausible. Balance would be very easy then.. But there are a bajillion things wrong with the idea... And I guess I shouldn't actually engrave my tangential fantasy ideas into posts.

In the end...

Rebuilding is easier than solely persuading/arguing the changes to go away. Although I fear for the Yath.. Well, and Sorcere.. Magthere will be a lot stronger.. Hrm.. That a lot of switch-a-roo for us.

tensers is something I normally avoid anyway, I don't think i'd use it anymore. i've seen alot of hating on the dev changes but whats with all this "is you have a 18-20 you shouldn't get bonuses" ?? if they took dev they get a bonus for dev, else you are just breaking characters. its not a good suggestion.

what actually worries me here is healing and rezing. if you can't rez for 2 mins/5 mins, you can't ooc rez people without waiting around ooc for 5 mins to do so. am I wrong?

I posted this to Voronwer already. See, I mastered this on my paladin and wizard, so when PvP came? I handled it with flying colors.

You see, you generally have a ltot of spell slots. There exists this metamagic feat called "Extend Spell". What it does, is doubles the duration of spells. This allows you to cast your turns/level, or, heaven forbid, your hours/level spells (the non obtrusive ones. Hell maybe the obtrusive ones!), and you *just let them run.* When they wear off, you do this thing called "Resting", which you can easily do because extended buffs last a really long time, even as a level 16 caster. So while you're RPing, you do this thing like, where you emote praying and stuff. And then you rebuff. That way, if PvP happens? All you have to do is like, toss up Power, Favor, and smash. Maybe drink a haste pot or whatever. See, because of this, the OTHER guy can't sit in GS and buff either!

Dunno man. I've seen people play clerics and rock house, and it's always the same people complaining about the clerics, and I watch them fight, and they're so used to GS that it's a crutch for them. They can't function without it. they CAN. With flying colors. But they don't, because it was too good. Perhaps I'm using it wrong and Ruce will correct me if I am, but he has a semi-famous saying in regards to balance on Amia. It says that if he can't imagine living without something, or if he wants somthing added NOW, it is probably too good, and it should be nerfed/balanced/not added/etc etc etc.

I don't like the Timestop/IGMS spam option either. It's just got this 'silly' quality to me.. And the fact that is costs at least 100,000 gold each fight disturbs my inner cheapo.

I already started this on my Mage. Even tho' she can be made screwed with a Mord Scroll anyways. Although she denied scribing a scroll in RP because 'The Weave has shifted and now I feel like distributing these is going to bite me in the ass'. Heh.

Also. You play WoW? I don't see it... There isn't any RP.

Edit: I need to stop distracting myself and work.. Triple post?!

The only reason I chose 10 SD levels is RP.

If I drop the last 4 levels and take 4 more cleric levels instead, I will end up being a better sneaker, a better fighter, a better caster and a better healer.

I would suggest setting GS to a set time, like with Divine Favor for example which lasts One Turn everyone. That way a cross-classed caster like a PM/Wizard would get the same amount of time to escape as a pure wizard instead of something silly as a six second escape time.

Taking more SD levels making you a worse sneak?

That makes absolutely no sense.

Anyway, I am going to remove myself from this topic, because we're going horribly off and I haven't the energy to get involved in a flamewar. I'll see how this goes, and start figuring out this year's rebuild :(

This is starting to turn into a fire fight.
And just because, I feel there were some good suggestions in a post I made much earlier, I'm going to quote it again. And as this post, has not had people pick it apart, I would like people to do so, and talk, Minus the flaming, name calling.
If yer going to do that... get some mud... get a pit... jump in it... and fight >.>.

ShadowRayne wrote:
The only thing I have a small problem with. Is the heal potions.
If the changes are going to be as they are, I would propose a significant decrease in the price. . The point of the potions was to be healed fully. . I mean, On a server where it is constantly on hardcore (Being able to be crit by monsters/Attack of oppurtunities with potion drinking, point blank shooting/Rolling for the amount of HP that potions heals).. Where your potions normally may heal... 15-25 hp... when being hit by serveral things, which get attacks of oppurtunities, which may or may not hit you, and make the whole process of drinking the potion infact entirely pointless aside from a few seconds more of life.

The true problem here is that Heal potions are used primarly in PVP which winds up with "Who ever has the most money wins."
Quite frequently PC's in PVE ~NEED~ the heal potions to be able to survive an ambush. . and quite frequently they need to drink more then one at a time to be able to get out of being boxed in. For those with low AC or HP.
So with that in mind, I have a suggestion. . that the timer be activated for the heal potions only when a Hostile PC is nearby. That or raise the price of the heal potions to say... 76k a stack.. Hell, maybe even 100k a stack... that way they really are expencive. .and are worth what they heal. . or worth more then what they heal even.

Death on Amia is nothing, I admit that... Comming from another server where the minimum xp loss you can get from a death is 5% total XP and the maximum loss is 9% total XP. The gold costs for the Average death was 6000gold. And that was if your body was around for it. If your body wasnt, you could have someone raise you at a temple, which would cost 45000gold. Those two Rezzes would result in an average 5% of your total XP being lost, and that wasnt using the Raise or Resserection spell.
The raise or resserection spells would be free, but would cost the most XP to have done, Raise would be 9% total XP loss, and Rez would be 7% total Xp loss... but this is irrelevant for the current argument, but it does show how lite death is on Amia.
But still, Death is Death, its plain annoying. No one Enjoys being killed out in the wilderness.
For those who can not buff themselves adequately it comes even easier in some area's.. and without the help of the Full Heal Potions they are likely to be screwed. Because other potions quite simply dont heal enough HP to be usefull at later levels, when things can hit you for 40 damage a swing, or crit often enough to make even drinking one small potion utterly pointless.
As I stated above, I believe that the main reason for the change is PVP. "He/She who has the most money wins, and can gloat about it". If it's possable, something to even out the PVP and PVE of it. Would be to enable the timer only when a hostile PC is nearby. . . OR, have the timer activate when the PVP tool is activated by a player, and for the player who activates it target.

Wait, I lied.. Not the only thing I have a problem with.
Raise Dead & Ressurection.
I understand the cooldown for Raises and Rez's in PVP.. Because I imagine its plain annoying going into PVP and killing someone, or two people, then someone comes in from the side and rezzes them, then you have them attacking you yet again, and again, and again... I wouldn't know, I try to stay out of PVP personally.
But a 2minute cool down could be quite annoying in the PVE area... although admittedly, it can add for a little bit of RP during the time you need to wait for the timer to be ready to do the Rez, but it could also be quite annoying... Say, if you need to get out quickly.. or its a dangeriously unstable area that the person died in, so you want to rez them and get the hell out so you can drag away whatever is causing it to be dangerious, keeping you alive and the person you just raised.
Although the way around that of course would be running out of the area entirely, and waiting for the spawn to either despawn, or just regrouping then charging back in to rescue the fallen.
So I guess I managed to even out the bad with the Raise and Ressurection thing mid Rant.. So it can likely be ignored, but I'll leave it there anyway.

Infact, here's an idea with the Raise/Rez thing... Instead of Timers... Perhaps the Spells need Reagents to work.. Or the raised Target suffers a sort of ressurection sickness.. which could be a temporairy level/stat drain.
Which actually to me, makes sence.. because in PnP. .When you die, you lose the last 6hours of your memory.. or at least thats how it was allways played with me. So having that stat/level drain penalty after a raise/rez would be fitting.. the person who got raised can either wait for it to wear off, or can see a cleric or NPC priest to have it removed.
To go with the idea of reagents for Raise/Rez, perhaps the scrolls could be increased in price.. or, a second scroll added which comes with the reagent and offers a clean rez.
Or hell, making it so that the effect from Raising/Rezzing is impossable to take effect while in combat.
Or even having the spell cast on the character, starts the timer for the rez... Say, someone see's a corpse, hits Raise or Rez on them.. then walks off... a Minute later said person is braught back to life.
I do like the cool down for the PVP part however. I think the only people who should be able to raise people constantly mid fight, should be possably Necromancers or Pale Masters, who animate the corpses of the fallen.. other then that, the 5 minute cool down on PVP raising is I believe a good idea, that way people cant win a battle through shear numbers, because someone raised someone else many times during the battle which lead to the side who got killed many times, winning.

Alright, Rant over. I hope some of these ideas are actually helpfull aswell =)

It might work good for clerics, but I'm wondering why BGs have to pay for that as well ?

Instead of Divine favor, you could have done that modification to Divine Power. Cutting 2 AB from a class that has not much AB is something significant, because paladins and clerics have another way to increase their AB.

That was the only alteration that I see no reason.

I've never defined another character's RP by having Devcrit, nor have any of my characters. It's about as much a distinguishing feature of a STR-base as wearing fullplate. If you think your character's RP is badly compromised by Devcrit no longer being instakill, I think you need to consider how other people see them.

The more irascible part of me wonders what would have happened if Terra had fixed the way Devcrit doesn't lead to a Great Cleave. That also would nullify the RP of having trained to deliver a precise and powerful blow to a single target, but I doubt there'd be such difficulty adjusting the RP to fit.

The more this thread progresses, the more I laugh.

Dramatics to the extreme, I mean, this is better than theatre. "Oh dear my precious build!" Get over it. These nerfs cumulatively have 'an' effect on every single one of my (now retired) characters, and yet they are all still completely viable in their use after these nerfs. I have a sneaking suspicion that it has something to do with the fact I never allowed any of my characters to be One Trick Ponies, nor Crutch Abusers.

Even my crappy epic Wizard with ESF Craft Armor / Weapon and no useful Epic Spell Focii, 8 con, and 12 AC survived without broken GS. Instead of crying over a single lost tool, let's try, uh, using the multitude that remain at your disposal - even if they mean using your brain a little to work out what spell to use other than the Big Shiny Red Button Of Instagib.

I look forward to the HiPS Change, and thusly getting to watch the supposed 'RPers' who took Shadowdancer for 'RP' complain about HiPS being changed and that it has ruined their RP - despite the fact they are still a Shadowdancer with all of the RP that comes with it. I am likewise amused by the 'RPers' whose clerics are now useless or obsolete, despite the fact I thought people took Cleric for the religious, priestly, or otherwise deific side of the class as opposed to the Melee Instagib GS Overwhelming Pwnage.

If you took a class or a feat for the RP, these changes should not affect you. The Dev one at most, as it is changing the entire feat as a whole 'ICly', but the others? Daymn. You're still a Divine Spellcaster capable of casting level 6 spells. You're still a mage capable of summoning arcane creatures and delving in ancient lore. You're still a musclebound expert of melee combat. If the mechanics changes ruin your character's RP, maybe you need to reconsider your approach to RP.

regarding the rez reagents idea, you already have the option of an RP'ed true ressurection spell which 'commonly costs' fifteen diamonds, if you start adding reagents to normal rez that would make it

the scroll its on/spell slot
reagent
2 min if they we're killed in pvm
5 if it was pvp

for each rez, anywhere, any time.

lets not make things more confusing.

ed: what exactly do you want to do to hips? far as I learned, ICLY, within 10 meters of a shadow you are utterly gone. nuff said. what about that needs changing?

Edit: Oh and for the power RPers having trouble adjusting to the changes, try asking for advice at the build thread.

Probably a cooldown to the HiPS effect. The tricky part is nulling the 'Hide in Plain Sight' part without nulling ordinary stealth. As, at least in my opinion - if the Sneak (Shadowdancer or Not) breaks LoS, they can rehide safely, no matter how long it's been since they last played sillybuggers with the shadows.

I know at least one other server uses HiPS as a separate feat - using it will activate HiPS, with a cooldown (and apply this cooldown to normal stealth), and stealthing normally will let you cornersneak.

I'd sooner just tweak it so that no character has the Hide in Plain Sight 'feat' as a character feat, per se, and instead "Bonus Feat: Hide in Plain Sight" is applied as a temporary property to a character with Infinite Duration.

Any time the character pops out of stealth (detectable by the StealthMode() hook Terra made), the HiPS property is removed for X Duration. Thus, you can rehide freely as need be, but unless you've broken Line of Sight you'll still be visible.

The problem I have with this is that RP and PvP do intertwine.. Quite frequently on Amia, in fact. They are only two separate things when you have bad role-players on the premise. If you wish to make a character that you want to be a well role-played villainous bully, you're still going to go for as much of a powerbuild as you can. As there's nothing threatening about a character that can be so easily overcome in PvP and your RP concept becomes moot. So the nerf -does- effect RP by simply affecting PvP. The two worlds are connected.

thats cornersneaking, its what rouges do. hide 'in plain sight' means just that, you hide in a shadow, literally. any nearby shadow thats big enough. the rest of the detail is better discovered icly.

I wasn't too concerned about the current changes but this bothers me.
