Yeah, there's something wrong with the system. Pretty sure the DMs are looking into it.

Actually, no, there's not anything wrong with it. I thought there was, myself, a few days ago, but it turned out I was making the mistake that -everyone- does when they think the subrace system is broken.

When I asked Tormak, you know what he told me? Read the paragraphs at the top of the subrace page. I did. It explains it all quite clearly.

Quote:
To play a subrace, simply pick the correct Race and then type in its recognised word (case insensitive) in the subrace field of the Character Creation Menu. The stats presented in the table below override the standard racial modifiers (for example, you will not receive both Dwarf and Duergar bonuses). The system first removes your NWN base race bonuses, then adds Amia subrace bonuses.

In other words, the character will be reduced to a human stat-wise. All bonuses you saw in creation screen are nulled, and the final bonuses are the ones you can read from the table below.

This means that when you use the subrace activator, your Character Creation Screen stats are altered as follows (the whole "removes your NWN bonuses" part):

Dwarves (-2 Con, +2 Cha)
Elves (-2 Dex, +2 Con)
Gnomes (-2 Con, +2 Str)
Halflings (-2 Dex, +2 Str)
Half-orcs (-2 Str, +2 Int, +2 Cha)

AFTER the NWN bonuses are taken away and you log back in, then Amia's subrace mods are applied.

so basically those stat increase/decreases are the stat changes for the default subrace of those races

I think it's easier to explain it this way. It resets your stats to that of a default human's then adds the modifiers.

So a strongheart with with 16 str at creation will be reset to 18 to nullify the -2 lightfoots get then add 2 that stronghearts get to make it 20.

Yes, and when creating a character, you need to keep in mind the stats that will be altered with the NWN stuff being taken away.

For instance, take Sun Elf.

Sun elves get +2 Int, -2 Con.
NWN elves get +2 Dex, -2 Con. (which is, as stated above, nulled by the subrace activator)

This means that if you start of with say....

STR 13
DEX 13
CON 13
INT 13
WIS 13
CHA 12

...first, we kick the NWN stats, so that it looks like this:

STR 13
DEX 11
CON 15
INT 13
WIS 13
CHA 12

THEN Amia's subrace is figured in, meaning that this particular sun elf's stats will end out as follows:

STR 13
DEX 11
CON 13
INT 15
WIS 13
CHA 12

There's nothing complicated about it, really. You don't even need to think about complicated "resetting" or "nullifying." Every subrace description lists the ability modifiers the subrace gets. Just like Moon Elf ability modifiers are +2 Dex, -2 Con, Sun Elf is +2 Int and -2 Con. Moon Elves don't get +2 Dex and -2 Con on top of the +2/-2 they get from being a Moon Elf (that would be absurd), so why would anyone else? Every subrace description in any book or WotC article reports ability modifiers in exactly the format we use. I don't understand why it's confusing here, because nobody makes the mistake in PnP.

Starting ability range is always 8-18. Ability modifiers modify that. It has nothing to do with whether you're human or elf. (It might be easier for some to understand that way but this is how I see it and it looks really trivial.)

Because in PnP your race modifications aren't automatically applied first.

True, but you should realize how it is when you look at the subrace description, before going in game to make your PC. When your original idea doesn't match with what you see that character creation, some bells should be ringing.

I'm not being very helpful, of course. Evidently those bells don't ring for many people. I have no idea why, so I have no idea how it could be fixed.

Put it in bold and in a different colour. It was alright before (minus the flashing, which was incredibly annoying).

the one reason it is confusing as hell is cause without dm commands you can't test the builds beforehand, nwn doesn't let you set the stats right, and it is actually very confusing half the time to work out whats going and whats coming. pixie stats stumped me for a good few hours xD

I do got one question, do aasimar, tieflings and gensai come under the 'racial stats are removed first' rule aswell?
