I am looking at making a cleric and would like to know do I have to take the domains that are listed against the God my character will follow on the side bar or is there scope for me to pick other domains which I would think fit either more to my character or the God he/she will worship?
Cheers,
Bosie.

You can take whatever domains you like. However, if you take the same domains as your god, you get bonuses when you use the Pray function.

I kinda think that you should take domains of your god. Thats what I have done with all my characters apart from one shameful power-build.

What Yurell said. Dont fall into the same old lark of taking Travel and Trickery just to give you invisibility and haste forever and a day.
Besides some of those deity combos are absolutely -amazing-.

I just wish Drown would get added to the Water Domain spell list.
I mean it's the only actual -water- spell in the game. Poison? Pfft.

Even if you don't take both domains in your god's portfolio, it's always a good idea to take at least one domain there.

Meh. NwN domains are a joke. Some are amazing and some are worthless.
And they work nothing at all like PnP.

And they work nothing at all like PnP. Give me my PnP Spider and Trickery domains *cries* *spider climbs up the wall before polymorphing several pebbles into giant stone spiders and dropping them on you*

Not a joke at all, imo. Mot all of them are useful in some way shape or form. The aftermentioned Water domain gives Ice storm, and if you're charisma based you can turn Elementals. In the end it's what we have to work with, so we work with what we got.

I'll reiterate that your character will be taken more seriously if the Domains are viable RPwise. -- and you can fight to have some Domains viable that aren't necessarily listed, but try to give RP reasons before you do so. DMs like that!

An example:
"I don't understand why no one takes my drow cleric seriously. I've taken all the tests, done hours of RP and killed off all the competition. What's that? Uh, domains? Why Good and Sun of course. Yes, it's a cleric of Lolth. Why? To be able to pwn other drow, naturally. What? Don't roll your eyes at me, it makes perfect sense." And so on.....

Huh. I've always been under the impression that domains matching that of one's deity was a requirement. I guess I'm glad for that mistake.

It's encouraged. That's all i have to say in the subject.
Like Bravo21's Example - Don't be surprised if the Dm refrains from giving you a DC, when you Rp your ...Drow Lloth cleric with sun and Good as her domains

I just feel Water Domain should get to cast Drown because it's the only definite water spell in the game. Same way I think Druid should get Gust of Wind, just because they don't have a good spell to represent the Air side of Nature(that doesn't involve lightning). Drown isn't particularly useful since clerics have Slay Living/Harm and Gust isn't particularly great for Druid compared to the other field controls they get, but it's just an RP nod I'd prefer to give. Likely this is something for another topic though.

The 'pray' functions will blow your mind too if your alignment and domains all match your god.... seriously nuts.

A server I played on would let you pick domains, and then dependant on the god you picked, if you didn't pick the right ones, it would give you the right ones.

Well, there used to be a policy of "at least one of your god's domains." I'm not sure how well it's been enforced because it's impossible to enforce in practice, and I guess it was never written anywhere either. Your god and clergy will probably frown on you for not being traditional, in any case.

Druid's should get gust of wind imo. It would hardly make them OP'ed.
As for domains, just pick whatever suits you. Drown isn't that useful anyway being fort based but yes, i appreciate your point.

Most spells are useful. Failure to use a spell correctly suggests the existence of a poor interface between the player's chair and keyboard.

Fort spells, in the wake of Dev Crit and MCS, are pretty much just for killing things in PvM that you could easily have killed with something else anyway.
If anyone gets hurt by a Cleric's Drown, they would have easily gotten killed by the Cleric's Slay Living, screwed by their Harm, or crushed by their Implosion. That, or they just rolled a 1 and are unlucky bastards anyway.
Which is why I would say Water Domain would/should get Drown as a LV 3 or 4 spell.
