Sooo... I did some calculations today... apparently, character with 32 strength can easily push or pull about 8000 lbs or around 4 tonnes of item or creature, or lift around 1800 lbs, around 800kg over head, double of that off the floor. How is one supposed to cope with such in terms of roleplay and simple every day things? Are our characters used to strength enough not to dunno shatter bottle they are drinking from, or sending people you handshake into shock due limb loss?

Also same would mean character would easily be able to bring down gates of an poorer fortifications down without any problem.

Basically some deities have less strength or about same as that.

Also, how exactly would one treat character with same amount of intelligence or dexterity?

I wonder since numbers are more or less staggering.

I have no idea. 2nd edition did abilities so much better since the scale actually made sense.

Actually it is impossible to play a char with 40 int.

That would equal an IQ of about 23985, and no player has that.

How I see it: 6-18 are natural human abilities. Anything beyond that is supernatural/unnatural, and manifests only in special aspects like saving throws and spell memorization, not in the obvious, daily manifestation of your abilities. A mage with 25 Intelligence may not be any smarter than a really smart guy with 18 Intelligence, when it comes to argumentation, logic etc. His mind is simply trained to absorb arcane knowledge in ways nobody could achive with natural talent alone.

It doesn't make perfect sense especially when it comes to physical stats, but you get the general idea. What's important for me is to interpret abilities in a way that still lets us play normal, if skilled and talented, people. Not superheroes.

How great it is that we still seem to be under the impression that intelligence itself can be quantified...

Take that debate to cognitive scientists. IQ works exactly as well as it is supposed to work and is a reasonable measure for intelligence, as logical talent and no other form of talent, even if the statistical error is in the tens of percents. Qualitative results and means for comparing correlations are where its all at.

No one cares about the popular idea that IQ is supposed to be accurate or the politically correct notion of intelligence being something that should not be studied or that other forms of talent should be called intelligence too.

IQ does work exactly as well as it is supposed to work, and I have nothing against it, honestly. It can be a very useful number as far as education is concerned, insofar as it can be used to get special help for children for whom the standard in educational procedures has thus far been ineffective. This applies to those with high and low IQ scores alike.

However, to claim that it is a reasonable measure of intelligence is laughable. When taken in a suitable environment, an IQ test can, I will concede, help put into solid numbers a person's ability to quickly relate words, conceptualize shapes, remember strings of data, and perform basic arithmetic and logic problems. But to say that intelligence can be accurately measured through tests of these skills is nothing less than an insult to the most complex system we have yet discovered.

I don't say that because I believe there is a sort of sanctity about the mind, either... I would love nothing more than the coming of the day our race understands itself. That day is far away, though, and until then, we risk a great deal of our humanity in attempting to quantify "intelligence".

...but this is entirely off topic and I apologize. If you'd like to continue this conversation in PMs I'd love that. :-)

Logicality is correct, especially in this context: the Intelligence we're talking about constitutes rougly 1/3 of a person's mental faculties (the other 2/3 being Wisdom and Charisma), and includes such things as learning crafts, physical skills and arts. It certainly can't be reduced to IQ.

I have no idea whose arse Blink pulled his numbers out of, either.

I seem to consider a different definition of intelligence then. It feels easier to consider different talents separately and not group them together as one ability. When one speaks
of intelligence, only talent in logic and deduction comes to mind.

These are the kind of definitions that need to be clear before a discussion starts. :)

Agreed. Epic characters are exactly that, EPIC. You water what that means down or try to make them fit into "normal" parameters, I will serve your carcass to the Blood God.

Well, we're strictly discussing how to role-play D&D abilities, right? And the Intelligence which concerns us here is the one that gives you bonus skill points, lets you memorize more spells per day and is, arithmetically speaking, 1/3 of the mental stats that define your personality. That Intelligence can't be reduced to logical deduction and argumentation.

Also, Superheroes are sometimes cool. But seriously, an island full of people who can lift trucks? No thanks, my PCs are quite normal people! Epic doesn't exist here.

Guys. You gotta realise.. That since we're all pretty much playing epic characters, The Bar has been raised.

Think of Eliminister, He's like "The wizard of wizards". In the books he's level 24-25, But on amia he would be like level 40-50.
It puts some logic behind our abilities.

Super hero abilities are exactly what makes me rethink whole concept. Apparently, party of str build melee warriors can lift small tank and carry it around.... or should we say they are simply strong in scope we can achieve in reality?

Well, it really boils down to how you want to see the setting. If you want to interpret your PC as a superhero who can lift, ahem, loaded wagons and calculate the probability of a Sembian shopkeeper sneezing tomorrow five past noon, I think that's quite fine. But if you think that's awkward, it's not very difficult to consider your natural abilities on the scale of 6-18 and calculate anything beyond as supernatural influence and specific combat/magic talent. Personally I like to think of our PCs as ragtag adventurers trying to get by in a world full of things way bigger than us.

I don't think this comes up in game often enough to be an issue, anyhow. I don't think anyone is epic (other than in reputation and renown, perhaps) and I don't think PCs can smash mountains with their fists, but I've yet to come across a conflict where another had so drastically different ideas that I couldn't just shrug it off and move on.

Yes, see, you show both possibilities right there.

It's a relativity thing.

Someone on Amia with 40 STR can still lift whatever wagon, small village, etc, etc just fine. It's just the people from the books that we boost up more, so they can be -relatively- stronger than our own epics.

Just because we have a lot of godly-strong people on Amia it is the stupidest thing to me to water that down when it's just as easy to boost the other things up. So Tempus only has 40 STR in the stat books? Fine. Boost him up to 80 if he ever actually decends upon Amia, don't go saying 40 STR PC's can only lift 1000 pounds. It's a fantasy game go Khorne's sake, if 30 people on Amia have 44 STR, then 30 people on Amia have mindblowing strength and can do EPIC things IC. But you can always boost whatever gods, heroes, etc up to have 60 just fine, and they can lift up the island if they want.

The encumbrance scales are completely bonkers, given that they alone inflate with increasing score. My 42STR chap loses 1120lb capacity by dropping to 41, but he only loses one point from Damage, Discipline and AB.

Ignore and RP about something else, says I.

The biggest thing I despise is indeed the encumbrance scales. But! I hold that as a limit to how much a character can do under the MOST pressure. Kind of like how those people who work their lives away can move a truck sometimes. Or how in life-threatening situations, people can lift cars off their mothers.

So I never go to the limit carrying stuff, cause I figure Sam just couldn't do that all the time. I use lots of magic bags.

There's always the option of RPing the extremes in character abilities as an extreme in skill. When you look at the requirements for Dev. Crit. and Epic Dodge I reckon the only way to put it in context is to portrey the massive ability scores as almost(?) supernatural skill. I mean, a well trained fighter may have Str. 18 and a level 20 BAB but they're not getting an Olympic Gold in Fencing type thing.

How do you figure that out? Besides, that's so many standard deviations out that the IQ scale breaks down and you can't use it anyway.

Beyond that, I agree with Logicality and Iron about IQ.

Edit: DC to spot the moon:
Distance +1 per 10ft = 407 000 km / 10ft = +1.3E8
Size Modifier -16 for colossal+ or to be fair -96 when you count each size modifier doubles the size and takes 4 from the DC

So a DC of ~1.3E8. Have fun!

Just a notice for people... those with dex builds who have epic dodge... when RPing trying to grapple or such with you, I dont view Epic dodge as a RPable feat... since we have special dice rolls for grapple, touch attack, etc.

If you get a touch attack, they can epic dodge it since it's the first attack, meaning the grapple fails.

The grapple dice roll is woefully overpowered for str users. Especially since grapple is a multiple step action where you first have to provoke attack of opportunity from the one you try to grapple.. and if it does damage to you, you fail.

And if you're trying to grapple someone, epic dodge still counts says I. You CAN try and grapple more times than one per round though, but every attempt gives them an attack of opportunity on you.. which might hurt if they are rogues with 14d6 sneak attack.. Which I personally think is more than fair, given that people with epic dodge is all about EVADING capture and not big burly men with unbeatable rolls that then punches you in the face and laughs.

They're escape artists. If you want to capture one, you don't try to tie him up.. you bash him in the face repeatedly with your weapon until he's knocked out or dead. Slippery bugger can't try to escape then.

Steps for grapple:
1. Provoke AoO, if you take damage grapple fails
2. Melee touch attack, if you miss, you fail.
3. Make grapple checks, if you win you're now grappling.
4. Maintain grapple. (various penalties in case the target has friends)

Grapple is designed by Wizards with a strength bias for reasons grounded in real, roman Greco wrestling that I will not bother explaining for a tenth time. Maybe Ruce will want to.

I just find the "If you get damaged, you automatically fail" thing stupid. There should have been a Concentration, or for NWN, Discipline check for that. Like Discipline/Concentration vs Damage taken while trying to grapple.

My DBZ monk going to grab someone, but ultimately failing because they hit him in the face with a shoe (for 1 HP) is dumb.

I really would like to to see grapple more widely used. It really adds color to rp for one thing it also makes a guard arresting someone possible -without- killing them. Right now you have the choice to attack a character using pvp and kill them to basically 'stop' them, then you get the witnesses saying "Oh my gods he just killed that guy, Butcher!!" But given the choices whats the alternative? Guards -can- grab offenders, I mean we know it for a fact lol, just not with these rules. I mean pvp is frowned upon for the most part, that I can tell, if I'm off on this then disregard my opinion as ignorant lol. So if you want to attack someone but don't want to go into pvp and what Dark said is true in his example, how the hell are you supposed to fight or subdue -anyone- without killing them?

I like the idea of a Discipline roll (but not against the damage but against the the defenders attack of oppurtunity roll) or possibly the next attack a character has, since most have around 4 to 6 attacks per round, with a lower ab being used to counter the attack of oppurtunity being used to keep the grapple in effect even after you've taken damage. The game designers, meaning the TSR designers, really should have thought this one through alot more I think. I agree it not only dumb it's stupid.

oh also Epic Dodgers don't get off that easy ;)

Starting a Grapple
To start a grapple, you need to grab and hold your target. Starting a grapple requires a successful melee attack roll. If you get multiple attacks, you can attempt to start a grapple multiple times (at successively lower base attack bonuses).

Holding onto someone when you're significantly stronger than them is really, really, really easy. When the opponents are significantly more skilled and nimble, the difficult part is getting them tied up enough to hurt them, especially without leaving yourself hilariously open to counter attacks. If you're in an unarmed wrestling match, that's just a matter of being frustrated by them wriggling out of the choke/lock each time, but if they're the aforementioned 14d6 Sneak Attacker with a handy little prison shank, then they're going to gut you like a fish while you pin them.

Thus, if 'Slick' Epic McDodgey just wants to get away from 'Chunky' Tank O'Devcritter without escalating the situation, then he's out of luck. If he doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and has a dagger or shortsword, then Chunky is about to see what colour his own spleen is.

What Uce said... I'm happy to be Grappled provided the attacker is willing to take the risk of attempting it. I mean, Epic Dodge is as hard to get to as Dev Crit and having it overshadowed by a bit of strong-arming is a bit lame.

Personally if someone randomly tried to grapple my Epic Dodge PC/s I'd certainly expect them to go through the full process.

Uhh.... Im pretty sure the highest (Or "impossibly high") IQ is 200, hence, setting the scale of 0-200, 100 being "average"?

Nowadays the top end of the scale is closer to 150 than 200, but I am fairly sure that she/he/it implied that 40 int (400 IQ in the classical sense) is still wayyyyyyy over any concieveable scale.

yea that scale has been shattered by Kim Ung-yong who has a IQ of 210

Random fact. Must be so boring to have over 150 IQ though.. so few people to understand you, and everyone else must seem slow. No wonder wizards are eccentric.

Is that really accurate!?! I've had tests but never known what the number amounted to. Irony I know... but is that chart accurate?

Yup, thats the one in most widespread use.

Good tests are hard to find though. I was thinking of paying a visit to mensa, but those elitist buggers charge money for the tests. :)

If you go by 'old school' dm's guide/players handbook, and maybe the new ones I'm not sure. Intelligence is compaired to IQ by simply mulitplying it times ten.

Int X 10= IQ

so a toon with an Intellegence of 14 would have what we would call the equivalent IQ of 140, 18 would be 180 and so on up into the 300-400 range into supra genius bordering possible Autism, if you wanted to rp it as such.

This would only really work if you go off of Base intelligence... not modified with items/spells

seems to me if a person duns a helm of intellect after failing to undestand something there reading then gets the whole jist of it after the fact, -is- smarter wearing the helm and so there Int/IQ would be temporarily raised. I have to disagree. If the toons intelligence increases, that is what we call IQ, and thus they'd be smarter wearing that particular helm. If it was raised to an epic level that helm could even cause autism and even possibly a headache. lol

Considering that one's INT score directly determines how varied his skills are, I'd say INT can't be thought of as the sort of "intelligence" IQ seeks to quantify. Genii (that is, those whose IQ is greater than or equal to 140) aren't necessarily more skilled than anyone else...

I could see one's immediate recall and "processing speed" go up after increasing one's INT score in D&D, I suppose.

--

I think it's interesting that this topic has almost entirely shifted to one about INT. Of course, I am partially to blame for this, but still, I think it says something about the nature of the subject. If intelligence (in any sense of the word when applied to humans) could be easily measured, and its measurements correlated with specific examples of each "level" of intelligence, this particular branch of conversation would be over.

Also, what's with this autism thing? Not all genii are autistic. And certainly nobody in the D&D universe that becomes a genius would become autistic. ...That's not really something you can "get", like a disease.
