Only 500 Shadovar are Shades.
The rest are all humans from the time Netherial went into the Shadowplane.
So it's safe to say that the majority of Shadovar are infact human, not shades.

As I understand, all Shadowvar are living on Shade Enclave in the Anauroch, sure since the city returned, there may be some that left. But how I understand is that all those humans living on the city changed into Shadowvar during the 1200 years they were in the Plane of Shadow. This was described in the book, thus the quote I listed by Rivalen. There may be only 500 (source please), but then that is all the Shadowvar there is.
Also, that doesn't explain my question.

They also believe that the Shadovar will play some key role in her plans to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Luckily Salvatore has nothing to do with Shadovar stuff in FR. So his word is worth complete trash on this subject.
He can stick to screwing up Drow I think.

Well, he isn't very meticulous with his research. He gets things like spells, names (Shadowvar vs. Shadovar, Lloth vs. Lolth), and even deities wrong in his novels. Take the Cadderly books, for example. While there are few explicit screw-ups that would be conclusive, all through the series he seems to misunderstand Deneir and Oghma entirely. If you didn't know better, you might get the impression Deneir is the god of knowledge and song and Oghma is some dusty library keeper, and Gond is their nemesis (which is somewhat correct, though). In the most extensive novel series on Deneir and his faith, Salvatore refers to almost none of the lore other sources have on the matter. And so on.

Soooo ninja'd. Posting anyway. (yeah, I started this post hours ago, then went afk....guess that's what I get, huh?) Shadovar are humans descended from the ancient Netherese humans who, throughout their city's "exile" in the Plane of Shadow, have over the centuries, slowly evolved into a unique subrace in its own right, named after what the -people- of the City of Shade (once commonly known as Thultanthar, which translates literally as "Shade" in Loross) call themselves - Shadovar. The term Shade, however....actually has -three- connotations on Amia. 1) The unique, homebrew "shades" and "shade lords" which can be summoned by Amia's shadowdancers.
2) A humanoid creature who has traded his/her soul for the essence of shadowstuff (the shade template found in the back of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting).
aaaand...
3) The -elite- of the City of Shade, the Shades, are the noble, ruling class and those who have been chosen from among the "common" Shadovar to be transformed by the Princes of Shade (all Shades and arcanists, themselves) into Shades themselves. The selection process, as well as the actual rituals involved in this transformation, are a closely guarded secret, of which Prince Lamorak Tanthul (one of the Princes of Shade) is in charge of. It is through this process that an individual actually gains access to the prestige class outlined in #2, and is only -very rarely- done for an outsider (non-citizen of the City of Shade). Among the roughly 25,000 Shadovars of the City of Shade, only about 500 of them are Shades (to include the Princes, and the High Prince, himself).
