Mind this isn't just all my idea. Why I was the only one quoted I don't know. This was an issue brought up because their was complaints made about what is going on with Drow abusing the class and was getting into OOC issues. So the DM team started to work something out.

I can't post more because there is no more until when things are done. But there is no mechanical disadvantage like what was originally proposed where all Drow could never take the class because they would be made similar to how the Feytouched are, the race does not meet the class so its impossible to take.

I'm sorry if I'm rude, I'm just very shocked and besides pissed for other reasons, too. Either way, this is something that you shouldn't be doing in secret but rather getting feedback from the vast collective knowledge of the playerbase, as has been the case with new lore in the past.

Fine if you are. I am just shocked so many give a care about this when few years back we completely redid most of the Shadowdancer class and no one gave a damn. RP changed some and we had to put handrails up because of abuse. That's mostly whats going on here. We're giving the gray area here a more colorful side so Drow that want go and make a ranged class where they can rival the surface AA now they can working their own magic with oddly enough bows in tunnels... but darn mechanics.

So with the new options for those good and evil drow will make a more clear way to get the desired class bonuses. We will have all the lore of the classes right here on the forums in the public because we wrote it.

I think its really turning into something way bigger than it needs to be.

Totally with Iron on this one. If this class is being banned for drow, to stop them "abusing" it, I would love to see the lore on it first hand, rather than just be told that someone remembers reading something about it, but they can't remember where.

Meh, I overreacted. I don't like the fact that it's done based on the supposition that Drow AAs are somehow "wrong" when in fact there's a way to picture them that's pretty cool and the perfect example of drow culture twisting everything. I'm also leery of all OOC-confirmed metaphysical babble and needless distinctions in IC lore. It would be quite another thing if the motivation was to add diversity and richness to the lore for its own sake. But whatever, I'm sure it'll turn out fine and you'll be receptive to ideas and criticism when the time comes.

Yep the Shadowdancer changes didn't came without some tweakings either.

And that is the whole desire for it, to enrich the RP. Because we were even in the DMs forums on yes they can, no they can't. So we decided yes they can, but how? So the new classes are the how so there is no more of this confusion or abuse of things left uncertain even in the canon sources.

Just the how involves that the Drow are cut off from the special Elven classes so that we can properly give them their own special ones. Which we thought was okay because we found suggestive support for it, I think Mach or Gers did. Would Drow really even use their new classes if they can still just use the old sketchy one? That is about it...

If there is more confusion about it all or uncertainty we can make it a huge plot device, where Drow are indeed cut from all powers the Elves have but they find a replacement. Just didn't want to put out spoilers on stuff, which is the reason things like this are better kept in discussion with the DMs.

Even if I don't play a Drow AA or anything of the like, I look forward to hearing of the exploits of people exploring the lore.

It's a bunch more fun to be exposed to certain aspects of Lore ICly, especially multiple times with different characters, different paths of exploration and similar.

I think I'd take myself up on my own challenge if there would be an Arcane Crossbow Marksman or something suited for Drow. :D I'm with Grymia! Any time DMs change lore and expose it to the players, it creates a ton of opportunity to explore it in game and in character and that just sounds like a fun time to me.

For anyone that wanted to see what Elves of Faerun is.
http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs50/f/2009/ ... Karsus.pdf

It is mainly a collection of sources detailing a ton of things in more detail than I have been able to find elsewhere. Where some stuff may be homebrewed or not, I am not 100% sure, but the few of the many sources at the bottom I have read I seen contribute a lot for this collection.

I have found stupid and contradicting things even in canon sources through various authors. Which can be expected in writings from multiples authors in one setting. This collection is no different and while some things were tried to be ironed out, there is still some off things even in here I will admit.

Still its a great source to look to when you have no idea what novel or what was mentioned where. But like Iron mentioned some stuff is homebrewed, mainly the classes section from what I seen.

He pretty much goes over the basic stuff, IC, if you ask him. He's a "spirit guardian" or some such and protector of Kohlingen. He aided and died in the battle with Wyrmhold way back in the day. Bahamut did something or another and allowed him to go on as what he is now, IIRC.

Was there something specific you wanted to know?

Are the sand crawlers in the Khem areas just domesticated bulette or are they a different creature altogether just using the bulette skin?

Probably different creatures, considering bulettes live on temperate hills. Besides, I don't see how you could domesticate a solitary magic beast whose only purpose is to eat. Even if you could, Khem desert has relatively little food (especially meat), so it wouldn't be economical to keep such beasts.

They are sand crawlers. IF they were bulettes they'd be called bulettes!

PArdon the genre cross but I imagine it to be very similar to a Bantha on Tattooine. Large beatss of burden that are used to carry travellers and probably carry large wagons and caravans across regions where camels ar euncommon or nonxistent and horses couldn't handle.

I’m unfamiliar with the lore that goes behind the spell mummy dust if there is any. Does the spellcaster pick their summon somehow, or is it just plucked from some other plane at random?

Even though it's an Epic Spell, the actual summoning happens as it does with any other summoning spell, I imagine.

You may summon a random individual of a certain creature(i.e. summon some random Celestial Wolf you've never seen before and will never see again after the casting), or you may summon one you know by name, if it is willing(i.e. the Celestia Wolf you met in Brog and named Sparky and you specifically call for him at each summoning).

New Question-

What happens to a character that has been sacrificed to a god? Don't know if this is really lore or not, but does that mean perma-death for my character?

The god does not get the soul of the one sacrificed, it goes to Khelemvor as normal. So Lolth does not get the souls of all those people sacrificed.

Which essentially means, not permaed and can be brought back with raises or true res if the body is destroyed. No action another player does to another's can perma it without conscent, and while I'm not sure if the above stands true 100% lorewise, it does hold true for how it will be handled one way or the other ICly, unless you conscent to Permaing your char.

99% Sure however that Halecta is correct and sacreficing someone does not send their soul to the god. Sacrificing someone is not done to give their god an extra soul to munch on, but an act of devotion honoring the taking of a life to their god, and doing it out of faith or devotion by killing the person/people/whatever. Unless a contract is made by a creature that can make valid claims on souls, or Kelemvor deems the person faithless/false, the soul goes to the patron deity the person followed. This is why most evil deities around Faerun prefer to scare people into worshipping the deity, rather than just killing them outright in a ritualistic fashion. (See Auril for instance)

It's the actual act of sacrificing someone that deities(the ones who ask/demand sacrifices at least) delight it. It is an act of worship, a show of the willingness to follow on the worshiper's part, as well as a show of power to those who are not of the faith. t may also serve as a constant warning to to those within the faith, to scare or convince them to stay in line...

An equivalent act, to parallel, would be for a cleric of Tyr to go "For Justice, in the name of Tyr!" before beheading a criminal, according to XYZ law. Deity doesn't get the soul. It just likes the fact that you've carried out dogma.

Deities get power for worship, and a sacrifice gives them 'faith points'. The act of the sacrifice is what is important to the god - they have nothing to do with the body or soul afterwards, merely the surge of belief and worship from the sacrificer (and perhaps the sacrificee).

Human with very subtle elven traits. Maybe their skin is oddly pale and smooth, perhaps their eyes are a striking green. Their ears could be slightly pointed, but it'd be nothing like a half-elf's.

Half elf + human = human
Half elf + elf elf

This is all mechanically speaking, at any rate. No doubt you would bear traits of your alternate ancestry.

When my long played elf got sacrificed in the UD one of the DMs did ask me if the PC will be permadead afterwards, to which I gave my consent. I suppose you can wriggle out of that but it is cheesy, imho.

There's the Quarter Elf Flaw (such as those listed in Unearthed Arcana) from Dragon Magazine #328 pg. 44.

Basically, they get pretty much none of the elven or half-half bonuses, are not considered elf, but gain a feat for the trouble (being a Flaw).

Say a human had an elf ancestor 5 generations ago, would it be feasible that one such could expect to live around one hundred years and have minor traits like slightly elven-like eyes?

Yes. If there was only one ancestor and it's been so long, I guess it would be very faint. But yes, I imagine family lines with elven blood manifest some physical or mental traits (if nowhere near game-mechanical consequence).

I was thinking along the lines of a family that lives a little longer on average than other humans (around 100 years), and where some display very minor traits like better hearing or sight, or with less need for rest and so forth. Purely for background, and would have no mechanical effect in game.

Yeah. Thann family in Waterdeep is a little like that, at least some members. Danilo managed to learn Spellsong, an elven magic, for example.

Its a slight tanget to the actual question but I always wondered what exactly is the connection to Kelemvor and elves. Elves of Evermeet imply that elves do not end up anywhere near Kelemvor and his judgement but rather becomes "part of the weave" if I remember correctly. It does leave the question of what happens to the elves not faithful to the seldarine and such.

I'd leave that up to IC mythology and theology. Kelemvor shouldn't have any power over any other dead than those who worshiped the Faerûnian pantheon in life (and I suppose those Faithless within its sphere of influence). Demigods and other culture spheres have their own gods of death, after all. This is very questionable, just like Mystra and the Weave. Some sources do indicate Mystra governs magic for all races and everybody goes to Kelemvor, but that's against the fundamental logic of the divine; their power extends only insofar as their faith. In any case, I don't see elves buying into Kelemvorite propaganda IC, true or not.

From what I understand and remember when I read up on Kelemvor for my cleric, ALL souls to go Kelemvor regardless of race or faith. It is more like a pit stop however, I believe. IIRC everyone lingers in the grey city for one week before they either move on to their deity, or are judged.

The Edge of Chaos, page 221 wrote:
Souls can reside in the city for up to a tenday before a divine servant comes to collect them, often completely clueless to the fact that they are dead. During that time, devils are allowed to inform souls of their state and bargain with them.

The forgotten realms campaign setting also has some stuff on it I think, I'll look it up and post it once I get back home and glance at my books (Which should be in about 4 hours-ish)

That's true, but it's an obvious contradiction and doesn't sit well with the rest of deity lore. Perhaps we need to remember here that FRCS and most other books are written from a humanocentric and Faerûn-focused perspective, and the default assumption is that you're under Kelemvor's influence. No doubt, you can find many references to other races going to the Fugue Plane, and I'm not refuting that. But I submit that this is a screw-up on the designers' part, doesn't make sense and should probably be ignored or at least treated skeptically. There are other sources that say elves don't die of old age like humans at all, but rather "pass West" directly to their gods or something.

I can't imagine, for example, elder elves going West to Arvandor out of their own will making a pit stop at the Fugue and Kelemvor first. Almost every pantheon has its own deity of death. Kelemvor, Sehanine, Urogalan, Osiris etc etc. My allround deity link says all mortals go to Fugue and they can recognize their patron deities and their servants who pick them up. But why have death deities all along then for every pantheon?

Exactly this. It seems like somebody forgot about the lore concerning pantheons, or just thought it was all too confusing for new players and wanted a single rule of thumb. Which explains most discrepancies in the lore, tbh.

To my understanding, the setting supports Iron's view here because deities are often recreating and molding themselves into "culturally suitable" images in order to have power and influence in that cultural sphere. Even across racial barriers, at times.

You know, say, Kelemvor discovers his inner elf and masquerades in the Seldarine...

Or Sehaine finds her inner human and masquerades as Kelemvor? I'd suppose all faerûn pantheon belivers go to Kelemvor's city to be judge, in the many descriptions of his realm you rarely hear mentions of the orc wandering by or the lone giants suffering. Though its just something I was curious about and as Iron put it not something players will ever discover. They can only assume and believe.
