I used to play on a different server LONG ago, dm's held, like here, all sorts of events. They did a "capture the flag" event once.....it was for say lvl 25-30. ..... We could do that too.....let me hear what you think.

I played on a server named Stormnexus like 5-6 years ago. Its a shameless powergaming server I wouldnt recomment to anyone. They did had some nice features however: The biggest factions had their own place with a Flag in. Each place/Flag could be captured by a enemy faction. As soon as the Flag was captured a shout went on all over the server naming it. The "winning" team got a small bonus (I think it was +1 AC,AB,savings and so) which lasted until reset or the loss of the Flag. To help each defending team each Falg was surrounded by some strong NPC captains, which of course was allied to the defenders and hostile to all else. That also made sure that a Flag couldnt just be captured easy if no players from the defenders was logged on. Anyway, it will take alot time and scripts I know, but the result could be great maybe...

Capture the Flag is boring. I'd take a Deathmatch any day of the week than have to zoom over to an endzone with a stupid flag.

I think it might be fun for a mini event once, if it were run correctly.
Permanently? Nooooooooooooo...

I remember we had Capture the flag as a winyan event back in the day when one of my chars was councillor. Both teams had to capture the flag and bring it back to their own while Mith and my char showered the area with grease and web. Then Va showed up and had a minor stroke from greased up elf ladies. Aah.. good times.

Probably will be better and easier with DM help, though.
Like Peeves said, could be a great one-off event, maybe something like the weekly Brawls. I might just have to make a gnome wizard who had CTF gladiators advertising his magical energy drinks and licensed fan products.

The mechanic could be good, if re-worked thematically for an event that it'd be relevant for but I don't think an IC 'Capture the Flag' event would be good save if there was an actual outright raid on one of the larger powers on the island.

I would agree with this so long as some effort goes in, I mean, the first chapter of neverwinter is like capture the flag, but with the waterdavian creatures >_> find them before the bad guys do yus? could work.
however this ain't unreal tournament =P I see no reason two factions would war and thusly enjoy the event over a flag, unless theres something special about said flag.
or...naw, I was about to say bloodbowl but i'm pretty sure thats warhammer not dnd...

It used to be a dm event. we had 2 bases....(we never rp'ed it!) we would attempt to steal/kill and grab eachothers flags....and bring it back to the camp. Dm - would give a point to each faction that scored. If killed....we would automatically be ported back to our base. the event was timebased (cannot remember the time limit though)...and at the end the winnerfaction would be declared. It may be daft - but i remember it as fun as hell! tormak - if you cant say anything polite, you need a hug!

I can understand where Tormak's point of view likely stems from, at least I think so.
Capture the flag is common to associate to things like First Person Shooters, Paintball and the like, where NWN is a much more dynamic environment, a living breathing and interactive world.
That said.. a lot of the concepts of Capture the flag CAN be implemented into the right kind of DM plot or DM event mechanically, without having the same association.
Strictly described as you propose, I cannot think of any rationale how a simple straight up capture the flag game can be integrated without even more things which likely cause the server to gain the unfair label of RP lite as it's not meant to be.
HOWEVER: If the mechanics are used in the background of a plot with the curtain of the world itself, and RP to cover them but also to provide more reason then 'Hey let's score points for our side lulz' .. mainly because the characters on Amia at some level or another have an In character motivation or several to do what they choose to do.

Complete OOC In game activities have no support on Amia. Support/talking about IC stuff and various other requirements for setting up DM events, character maint, bugs, testing etc is one thing.. but the likelihood that an OOC game like this would ever be done here is zero. I understand wanting to have fun, but it just doesn't fit with how things are done here. Amia's a RP server.

If a bunch of friend PC's want to play capture the flag, that's fine. What I dislike about this post, however, is that you're suggesting a capture the flag event without any kind of RP basis for it. This is an RP server, not a capture the flag Actions server.

Strictly described as you propose, I cannot think of any rationale how a simple straight up capture the flag game can be integrated without even more things which likely cause the server to gain the unfair label of RP lite as it's not meant to be. We managed to do it in Winya just fine without direct DM intervention, as long as all players involved do it trough RP rather than pvp or some sort of rule system is put into place the exercise actually works out quite well. The whole point of capture the flag is to find a balance between teamwork, defense and offense. As well as strategy and it's fun. The above points were the reasons it was run during the Winya gathering when it did. And for this reason I think several organizations on Amia could host something like this with ALOT of ease as capture the flag is originally a military exercise to facilitate cooperation between soldiers rather than a first person mad dash to the flag then run and hide. Honestly it's not exactly hard.. 1. Get a group of people together. 2. Go to an area that will suit your needs based on number of people and size of the field. I'd suggest the area behind the crouching lemur. 3. RP it out or limit everyone to nonmagical gear, 0 AC cloth and a quarterstaff. 4. Put a rule down that say you can't grab the flag while being attacked. 5. No hiding, spells or spamming abilities. 6. Fun and profit. It can easily be done if made in the same spirit as the bareknuckle brawls was, just on a larger scale. I always had alot of fun with them and some standard rules were put down (like the above) to keep the whole thing even and fair for the most part. And you don't NEED DM involvement. Setting up mini events like these can be done by only players alone, ESPECIALLY if you are in a faction. Plus I'm pretty sure a DM would be impressed if someone set up something like this at a random time and location on their own initiative, then whacked everyone with the DC wand because it's fun, original and team building RP.

Understood the idea's coming from a good place, but I don't really see this type of event fitting into Amia. So I'd have to say no.

Would be strange to mix WoW/Team Fortress and Amia.. Chickenball was fun, even though I never saw it implemented in any way. Could become a fine lower-class redneck game.

Amia is a place full of famous heroes who like to flex their muscle and hunt for fame. There's sports everywhere in the world. It would be pretty strange if the adventurers didn't jump at the chance to make money, gain fame and test their mettle in some publically organized games.
Capture the Flag is a game. There's always good IC reason to play games. Don't try to make it into a serious non-game IC event, but clearly a game within a game so that you can have all the betting, licensed fan products, arranged results, sabotage, news coverage etc. to go with it.

no one is going to oocly play capture the flag this isn't COD I thought we covered that?
regarding how this -could- work, I figure the roadwardens could come in handy, the random puzzle quests every now and again seam to get everyone going for an hour/day or two, you could skew that and place some sort of notice like 'archmage X has made a magical device that once reached it destination opens revealing...?...two/three teams race against time to secure the prize...ps murder = disqualification. subdual is aloud'
or something to that effect.
ed: and the ball would drop automatically on subdual. I could see that working, maybe.

Make it an IC sports event like the Bareknuckle Brawl, Kjetta's Alternate Beginnings gladiator matches etc. Sponsors, fans, politics, subterfuge and all. Would be better achieved with chickenball, though. I want to see it in already. Not sure who suggested OOC games.

I remember few games not exactly CTF, but brawls etc. Specially those in Kampos storehouse have been fun, was it about year ago. I think the handheld chairs or horn with flags could be used as the flags, show one has them. And I definitely see drows playing same game but "capture the baby" style, with holdable baby dolls Rules sould be simple and the game should be divided to sub categories for different level characters (by ELC ofc).

I see both point of views as valid.. I have always wanted to make use of events like this as a player- I love capture the flag...love love love. I like Irons idea the best but I'd like to see it organized by players then put in by DMs by whatever system is best. I don't like the idea of just making teams with no RP behind it. Perhaps as a bi-weekly event if the interest is high. None of my current characters would be interested in participating though.
