A sheet of Lead, or these spells:

Screen
Mindblank
Sequester
False Vision
Mage's Private Sanctum
Detect Scrying
Nondetection
Obscure Object

...So there are literally more spells to prevent being scried than there are spells that actually scry.

Quite a few for Arcane casters, but only one for clerics...

About Obscure Object - Can this object be alive?
What if it's cast on an object carried by a living person/Creature? Can you see either of them?

Nope. That's why it's Obscure Object. Not any of the other spells I named. Obscure Object is something you use when you steal something from a wizard or clergy, and you don't want them to track you with it.

If you try to scry to see if it's on a person, you just fail to see if it's on their person, you could still see them.

Right, here's a side-track question i stumbled upon when i was examining the trickery domain.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/timeStop.htm
Timestop - Is apparently a Trickery domain spell. Why? As far as i know it's a transmutation spell!

This spell seems to make time cease to flow for everyone but you.

That and ask Ao.

Timestop is perhaps one of the ultimate Trickery spells. I mean, so many possibilities.

Freeze time, pull someone's chair out from under them, replace the glass in their hand with a frog, sneak up behind them and go "Boo".

Clearly transmutation - You transmute, Change, the speed of yourself to ridiculous fast proportions and then proceed to do as dark immolation described.

Silly Dnd

Where's the problem in that? Trickery is more of a concept that anything related to concrete things, like a lot of Domains, Svensk.

How is "Invisibility" innately Trickery? It's an Illusion spell. Oh, but you can sneak around and do pranks under Invisibility. It's more how you use it, versus what the spell actually does, that defines it as Trickery.

There is no "Trickery" school, just like there is no Air school, no Travel school, no Plant school. But the fact remains deities give their followers certain spells that can be used in a way that fits in line with a certain domain. Could other spells be used to fulfill that same need? Possibly. But that's what the god gives you, so that's that.

Summoning devils / Demons - Once they die on the prime, they just teleport back to where they came from, Right?

So if you offer them a sweet deal to do some service upon the prime - They're in a decent win win situation, right?

To my knowledge, an extraplanar creature that is "killed" on the material plane will be transported back to its home plane. I also think they can't be summoned again for x amount of time.

Some devils/demons may see summons as a good way to expand their influence on the material realm, while others will just be annoyed at having been pulled away from "more important business".

How would you feel if something suddenly yanked you to another universe to fight and die for its own goals?

Thing is they usually get your soul.
Aren't dead.
And are immortal.

Not sure that is so 'win win'.

Do you need somebody's permission to give their soul away? I mean, If i'd give away my newborn child to a demon it's not like the kid would have any choice?
:)
And what do demons/Devils do with souls, Really? Use em as cushions?

actually, not sure if this is purely dnd related, but creatures like vampires and demons and such cannot even enter the human realms without permission. if im not mistaken the same theory was handed to devils specifically in dnd. thus they rely on tricks. demons muchly the same but I would imagine rely on getting you to their realm where they can do whatever the heck they please.

unless i'm way off again *checks fiend folio.*

ie. contracts.

How would a 'contract' look like? Do Demons really need contracts, i mean - They're chaotic crazypants? Do you use a spell to make a contract or just ask for a claw/hand/fin print in ink or an X at the bottom?

Demons don't tend to bother with contracts. They simply tear you apart and get their soul lunch that way.

Devils are more the type to bother with binding contracts.

And they use souls for their dinner, duh.

8) I agree demons are more likely to "say" they want to do a deal and...well, need I say more. I did do a lil' research before I played a tiefling, but contracts arn't like, always nessicarry, just that devils are much more likely to try that way than demons. also devils have strict hierachy like lawful people do so they like rules.

ie tricking someone that much is more satisfying than getting the soul to them, maybe >_>

It would vary between the outsider making the contract I think, as well as the individual demon or devil him/herself. They still have personalities and minds of their own, you know, just warped by evil.

What would it physically look like? There may be some paper or something, but it's not likely that that's the actual thing binding you. As in, ripping it up wouldn't undo it. It's probably something more like Geas. And it's more than likely coming from the outsider's end, it's allowing the mortal to make this pact, not vice versa.

Demons don't need contracts, no evil outsider needs contracts, it's the mortals that want power from them that do. The contract serves pretty much to give some protection to the mortal from the devil/demon killing you on the spot and just taking your soul then and there. For Devils, the contract is probably heavily stipulated and contrived with wording that can be changed in meaning down the line, or any way they can slight you down the road somehow, while "legally" abiding by the terms. That's their thing. A demon's contract would probably be a lot more straight forward. "I help you while you live. When you die, your soul is mine to eat/sell/torture." A Yugoloth's would probably look more like a Devil's, in that they deal a lot in negotiations between the two. But at the end of the day, they're looking to get the most out of the deal just like any other evil outsider.

A thought I have is that if a demon or devil simply kills someone to get their soul, they would instantly get all of it, and that's where it stops. Big singular boost.

But if they would slowly drain it by "willingly" taking the victim's soul trough a contract, and assuming a soul slowly regenerates over time, they would be able to drain said souls over an extended period -- aka, the classical eternal torture thing.

Devils are lawful and will try to set up systems and strategies that work well over long term; eg. having a steady supply of soulstuff to live off.
Demons want it all. Instant maximum gratification, right now. Gimme!

Just a thought.

they wouldn't just get it like that, theres spells for such things, ie soul bind. maybe would if you we're in the abyss but they arn't ungodly powerful like that on the material plane.

ed: mostly, are not ungodly powerful like that, on the material plane.

Souls are rather elemental things in that they aren't usually broken down into smaller portions most of the time in D&D. Your soul is here, your soul is there, your soul belongs to so and so, but wherever it is, it is completely. I know souls can be damaged, corrupted, or even destroyed, but never heard of them being able to be drained away. Maybe corrupted or weakened to the point where they can be taken all at once, but yeah, it's not like a slurpee you have a set amount of and can dole out at your whim.

Torturing a soul is completely possible, but I'm guessing it's more through things like mental anguish, spiritual despair and being warped/prodded, more than it is taking a part of it. Again, because as far as I know, you can't really "split" them into smaller parts.

Another reason for them likely not being able to be split is the fact that they're used as currency and sustenance in the lower planes. If they could be eaten and regenerated over time, then things as smart and cunning as Devils would just farm them, and that would be the end of it. But no, they and demons actually consume and destroy them, whole. As well, as they are used as a form of currency, they probably have a finite value/quality as well(though the soul of a great hero/adventurer/king/good cleric is likely worth more than a commoner's). Otherwise, souls would only need to be "rented" no sold, metaphysically speaking, for contracts.

Then we get to the major question - If souls is the major currency for devils/Demons and the best leverage, Then i wonder if you really can say "You will get my soul, Period, when it die. It'll go straight into your pocket or belly".

Afaik - You gotta pop to the fugue first, Right?

Oh, the souls most definitely still go to Fugue or some mediating place before being claimed. That's where devils and demons actually make deals with mortals under normal circumstances. It may depend on the agreement, though. I'm sure the devil can always say "as soon as I see you in fugue, your ass is mine", but it's likely not the case. how would you explain BG's returning from death, then?

In all likelihood, the demon probably picks you up when it's good and ready. Maybe after a certain number of deaths, maybe after a certain amount of time, maybe when you die of "natural causes" that magic cannot bring you back from. There's no blanket rule, as the demons and devils are free to decide their own terms and condition. But also remember, both demons and devils like spreading evil. They are quite fine with the fact you're on the surface killing paladins and spreading tyranny/chaos. What good is it to give you these hellish powers, only to snatch you up the first time you scrape your knee, so to speak?

I imagine demons and devils think of mortals like bonds. They set up rules and invest in you at the beginning. They get payed "annuity" through the evil acts you commit over time in the mortal world. And after a set amount of time or annuity has been reached, they come collect their principle investment(the powers they gave you) with interest: your soul.

It should be no surprise that Hell is home to the most successful lawyers and stock brokers.

Q: There is a barbarian settlement in the Skull Crags. Can someone give me some background on these?

I see them as being Rhuatym or Illuskan in origin, and with Rhuatym having been settled by a feudal, foreign lord, would it be safe to assume they are "refugees" from that area?

The barbarians are their own tribe and it would be more accurate to describe them as offshoots of Uthgardt. They don't like outsiders and they don't like arcane casters. Refugees? No, they have very little to do with the Wiltun Jarldom.

Fiending codex 1: Hordes of the abyss Is this Fourth edition? can i use it in my search for demon/devil lore?

The Fiend folio Or is this the only one i should use? It's apparently 3rd edition at least.

is the manual of the planes any good? (I understand it's a mix of 3rd edition and fourth)

Fiendish Codex 1 and 2 are 3.5, fiend Folio is 3.0, I believe. Use the Codexes.

Manual of the Planes is not a mix, unless they released a 4e book by the same name.

The Fiendish Codexes are the books you want.

1: Hordes of the Abyss

2: Tyrants of the Nine Hells

Unfortunetly, they most likely won't be in stores. You'll have to internet-hunt.

OK, well this may not be so much of a lore Q as such but:

Could a character be a Wyrm Grafter? In the sense of having a widget that costs X amount of gold and creates an item that represents a graft? (boots or gloves) and could these boots/gloves have a script that causes heavy hp loss and destroys itself when unequipped.

Its an idea I have for Whit for him to be a Wyrm grafter and create these. As I think that it could be awesome RP for Disciples to find him and ask him for these items. Of course he'd be taking many a abscence from the isle to collect eggs of dragons all over ferune. He'd only be able to help White, Green, and Blue Dragonkin however as he is cautious of red dragons, and down right terrified of Black ones! And of 'course as I worshipper of Tiamat he's not gunna serve mettalics.

Also would it be considered meta gamy if he pretended to be a silver kin to enter Kohl?

This would require a special request, actually several, and lots of in game RP to even remotely get a chance of doing it, for yourself. With a single dragon egg.

Dragon eggs.. aren't common. Require -very very- special handling to keep them alive. Curious PRC to be certain..

Ok then, you lot go away!

But we want dragon legs!

NO!

OK then, I'll go ahead and attempt to make just the buffeting wings graft for just the one character in time for lvl 9 RDD, OR go ahead and just ask for the wings to be removed when I get them.

I guess it could be incredibly good RP to try and find the egg, however depending on DM ruling getting it, may end up as impossible, and Whit will never have Wings.

The Fiendish Codes; Tyrants of the nine hells was one of the most fun sourcebooks i've ever read. Gods. There was so much inspiration and so much good examples.
And i can safely say that by reading both sides of the LAW/CHAOS Spectrum (Hell vs Abyss) The abyss can suck my [Cencored].
Devils reign supreme.

Major Question
Does all Evil Souls get punished?

I understand that Lawful evil souls that are somewhat linked to a devils corruption, or have somehow affiliated themselves with Devils are bound to get shipped off to the hells.
But what about those that belong to a Lawful evil deity?
Those that are Neutral evil and chaotic evil?

I have a Chaotic Evil follower of Shaundakul, Where does he go, for instance?
Or a lawful evil cleric of Kelemvor, Where is he bound to go?

Your alignment doesn't really determine whether you're punished or not. It's your adherence to your god's code. But I guess some evil gods' afterlives might be punishment for any sane person, like Loviatar's.

Your Shaundakulite will go to Shaundakul if he's followed the god's tenets adequately in life. If not, he'll end up one of the False (or Faithless according to some, but I'm not so sure about that). That is: City of the Damned (?) or Wall of the Faithless in the Fugue, where demons might steal the soul or devils might bargain for it.

But ..Technically, My Tiefling may follow an Evil god - But he's the spawn of a Devil and pretty much claimed by the devilish powers?

1) That is not a Forgotten Realms product, judging by the page color (FR is yellowish) and that red frame thing. It's a core product.
2) Taking a quick glance, it seems to talk about people who've made Faustian pacts, taken the advice of imps or participated in cults. I assume it describes a world where "most Lawful Evil people" are like this. In the Realms, with its multitude of gods who embrance a multitude of alignments, people like that are far from the majority.

You can't be claimed by a devil or demon against your will and by no fault of your own, under normal circumstances. Gods always have primacy when it comes to selecting souls for the afterlife. Devils and demons get the leftovers.

Hm, I think it is still conon, just non ferune specific so some things may not be 100% for this setting.

That said I dont THINK the Draconomicon is FR specific either and thats definately canon.

What do wizards who specialize in a certain school (Divination) gain, lore-wise? Do specialists gain access to special spells, for example? Would a specialist be better in divination than a generalist, even if mechanically their spells are of the same DC?

Mechanically, I know that they gain more spell slots, lose the ability to learn about their opposite school, and gain a bonus spellcraft.

Even in PnP, specialization gives you access to no special spells. It just means you specialize. *shrug*

And by virtue of being a specialist in anything, the implication is that you'll be better at doing things within that school. So even if your Premonition and other Divination spells look them same in NWN, probably in a DM event involving using a Divination spell, you'd get a bonus or some sort of leg up over a generalist.

Core products are canon as far as appropriate. If they conflict with Realms-specific information or don't quite fit in, ignore or modify. This is true for Fiendish Codex as much as Draconomicon; the latter is no more canon either, and has some outright erroneous information (about gods, specifically). But things like the anatomy and habits of dragons are same between settings so they're useful. In our case, we have detailed lore about the Forgotten Realms afterlife which of course trumps any generic Greyhawk lore.

So use the book, Svensk, but constantly be mindful of possible conflicts with FR lore.
