I don't know of any particular rivalries. The two groups are at a war, so it's kind of the whole side versus another. I imagine there may be some resentment from both sides though when looking at yugoloths. They are known for brokering deals with either side, furnishing weapons and supplies to whomever happens to have the stock at the time. Fiends or demons could easily see these fellow evil entities as traitors or cowards, as they switch sides a great deal.

But with any group of cognizant beings*, it can be dangerous to generalize outlooks too much. Like the relationship between Lloth's clergy and Evermeet. It's hostile, deadly hostile, but the actual actions two individuals from the separate parties take is mostly dependent upon their own personal experiences and outlooks. Though it is safe to assume the interaction will be anything but cordial.

*I consider modrons a distinct group separate from my generalizations about...generalizations.

No it doesn't. Gods have portfolios. Nothing else does. A devil may have favored methods but that is it.

As for specifics on the Rider: Bobo Underhill knows.

The Fiendish Codex; Tyrants + Hordes of the abyss all write that the archdevils/Demonlords have portfolios.

But what is a portfolio in reality? Why do gods share them, What happens when gods share them? Are there a set number of say, 'Love' portfolios for the gods to share?
One for the halflings?
One for the elves? etcetc

I was pretty sure that Gaknulak was an exclusively greyhawk setting deity so I would say no.

It's different among the different pantheons, but inter pantheon no deity can share the same portfolio.

Devils and demons do not have portfolios.

What's your point? Those aren't portfolios. AS I've been saying. Repeatedly. Pay attention here, try to keep up.

A patron is something that provides divine spells, And thus it should have portfolios as it says in that screenshot?

Portfolio, in the end, is a rather concrete matter. Only gods may have portfolios, and devils may also ascend to godhood, ergo devils and demons provided with a large enough follower base, may also possess portfolios. For example, Faiths and Pantheons clearly states that such devil/demon deities as Orcus, Pazrael and Bamphesomething have portfolios of their own.

As for the concept 'portfolio' the book states:
Quote:
Every deity of rank 1 or higher has at least limited knowledge and control over some aspect of mortal existence. A deity's connection to its portfolio gives it a number of powers.

So, if some more or less abstract thing is your deity's business, it's more likely for the god to have the portfolio. I don't know how these things are spread, they're just things the gods adopt as their dominion.

That's as far as anyone has to understand it really. The book has a lot of stuff meant exclusively for DMs, and I personally refrain from knowing too much of the itty bitty and even trivial specifics. Sure they're handy if you're a DM, but as a player, it tends to bring down the atmosphere a notch. Slavish fidelity to the rules and lore can be a very harmful thing to the immersion and excitement of the game. I recommend reading the book, though I haven't wholly done so myself. The history bits are perhaps the tastiest ones, everything else... blah. http://issuu.com/misantropia/docs/d20-- ... faiths-and

Patron doesn't equal portfolio. The Fiend books say nothing about portfolios in relation to Arch Devils and Demon Lords. Only God's have them (including and starting at "Demi-God").

Quick question:

Would Sharess approve of a drow cleric? I'm not entirely sure, but I do not see any issues right off the bat?

The more pressing question is... why? It's like a dwarf following an elven deity. It's weird!

Far less weird I would say if you look at the fact that Shar's Portfolio covers caverns, darkness and in fact the Underdark.
She has also been an ally of Vhearaun as well, further adding to the possible reasons that a Drow might have exposure to her clergy.

I know! But it makes it that much more awesome, doesn't it!
It's like that little bit of extra flavor you can add to a character: The unusual thing about them that sometimes people forget. In this case, a deity that doesn't make sense right away but when you know the whole story of her it finally does.

I can easily make it fit into the backstory if I try, at least I think so, but at this point I'm just wondering really.

Touche, none taken!
See, that's why I was asking. Like I mentioned in the build thread, I refuse to make her not make sense.
If it's too batsh*t insane, I won't do it :D

Honestly, I am more in favor of Mulan. I'm more asking because of the curiosity on the idea that came to me ^_^

Sure Sharess would. The thing about the Faerun Pantheon is that they're pretty unique. They're unique in the sense that they seem to accept all kinds of races to worship them, unlike the race pantheons seem to; Elven Pantheon, Hin Pantheon, Dwarven, Gnomish, Drow, etc. etc.

Also, Sharess seems to have a thing for Goodly Tieflings. Imagine a Goodly Drow? She'd drool, I'm sure.

The question was about Sharess, not Shar. :P

*Facepalm* They should have just left her as Bast.
Well then, in the case of Sharess there really are fewer societies more hedonistic then that of Drow, their need for earthly pleasures is almost universal.

Why, then, would a drow feel the need to turn to a foreign culture for justification of the hedonism inherent in her own upbringing? The drow gods and the drow culture are so ingrained with hedonism (both on the Lolthite and Eilistraeen side of the fence) that there would be little need or desire to look for a patron elsewhere.

It's surely possible, but people are way too unimaginative with their patron gods. If you want to believe in hedonism, you don't need to track down the single goddess in a foreign pantheon that specifically says "pleasure" in her portfolio. Most gods offer ample opportunity for theological and philosophical interpretation that emphasises hedonism or whatever else floats your boat. Gods and religions are multi-faceted things, it's much cooler to present the richness and diversity possible within a single faith than go for a seemingly quirky, but ultimately predictable and safe choice. IMO, anyway.

So, since this spiraled just a wee bit, I should point out that the character in question was CG, and not an Underdark drow.
It's not as unimaginable as you might think, really, given the right backstory. I was more curious than anything about a Sharessan drow.

But, I'm not going for that angle. Mulan made far more sense to me, as it was the original subrace that popped into my head, and I just need to get the details and lore checked out with the backstory I have planned.

And also, Sharess' faith is not just about hedonism.

Indeed, Sharess' faith is also about cats.
Hedonism AND cats.

Although admittedly "Hedonism" is a very broad term.

That's the whole quote and not a piece of it taken out of context, and it is diffuse. Thus i asked for a clarification, and i got a snarky remark. Wheee... :|

A cleric must have a deity in FR, so that particular part doesn't apply here. You can't cast Commune without a deity, because without a deity, you're not a cleric!

But it sounds more like they're vague and mean that you can both contact 'your deity' and a deity which is somewhat similar and/or allied to your primary deity. But they can also mean that you can only contact 'your' deity...
I also like to dubble-check Spells not available in the game beforehand 'If' i am going to use em.

It's all very confusing. :)

It meas you contact your deity or agents of your deity. Clearly it means your deity. Christ, this is as simple as it gets, and it is literally the first sentence of the description. Once agin it is incredibly straightforward and not complicated at all, stop making it that way. I'm not giving you "Snark":, I am telling you the way it is, and instead of taking the answer you keep running around in circles with your own commentary.

I fail to see how a line that says, EXACTLY,

Quote:
You contact your deity

Is at all confusing.

Don't bother answering that.

Mrrrrh... What im Trying to say is that when they write 'No particular deity' it sounds like they mean some random deity they cannot be bothered to write about. Like saying 'it was nobody particular'.
You interpret it as a cleric without a deity can't contact a deity. But that's so obvious it hurts! They clearly had some kind of idea as to why they put that () in there

Say you worship set, you can contact set. But you can also contact Sebek? But If you worship set, you can't contact osiris.

If they had said -"A cleric of no deity contacts a philosophically allied deity" Then it would just have been a stupid sentence. Clerics without a deity cant' cast spells.

But they clearly write -"A cleric of no particular deity contacts a philosophically allied deity." which has another context, which sounds to me like you can contact your deities ally/Friend something.

The thing that is fishy is the entire reason they put that sentence there. If they mean that a Cleric without a deity can't contact a deity, then that's just .. Silly. A cleric without a deity can't even cast spells! The entire explanation is ludicrous.

Edit - The reason im pushing it is because, as i said, I am thinking about using it IG.

In settings where you are allowed to be a cleric without a deity then you contact a god of similar beliefs to you.

We are not in that setting ergo you talk to the one who is giving you the spell in the first place.

Eg. Your god is Torm you talk to Torm or his minions through the spell, not any other god.

Aha. If this is the case then it's suddenly understandable. But try to see it from my viewpoint where i don't know about that little fact and it suddenly gets very ... Weird.

Svensk. I am going to lay this out kindergarten style for you. Don't reply after this. I'm serious. Stop spamming the topic.

Commune allows a cleric to, quote

Quote:
contact your deity

Therefore the cleric can contact their deity. We will use Shaundakul for this example. A Cleric of the Windfather can Commune with Shaundakul.

Quote:
—or agents thereof —

Agents thereof, of said deity, i.e. servitors, i.e. angels, devils, demons, imps, archons, flying meatballs, whatever sort of servitors that deity has. Continuing with the above example, a cleric of Shaundakul is likely to recieve answers, if not from Shaundakul, from his celestial servants, or possibly important Windghosts, some of his favored omen-creatures.

Quote:
and ask questions that can be answered by a simple yes or no.

This means what it says. The cleric may askquestions that can be answered by a yes or no answer. This means you can ask questions such as "Will there be a favorable east wind for sailing, tomorrow?". However, you could not ask "What direction will the winds blow?" because that is not answerable with a yes or a no question.

Quote:
(A cleric of no particular deity contacts a philosophically allied deity.)

In Greyhawk, and some other settings, clerics and druids may worship ideals, and philosophies. Therefore you may not be a cleric of Tyr. You may actually be a cleric of Justice. Many times these settings still have deities. Forgotten Realms is not a setting that allows ideal worship. However, in these other settings, should you be a Cleric espousing the virtue of Adventure, or Exploration, for exmaple, if you were to cast Commune, it is likely Shaundakul or his servitors, as stated before, would answer your prayers, because they are philosophically aligned with that particular virtue. However, because Forgotten Realms explicitly does not allow the worship of virtues, this entire section is inapplicable, because all clerics have a patron deity which they receive spells from. That is why it is in parenthesis. It is an exception to the base rule and a paranthetical annotation in case a setting allows worship of ideals.

Therefore, a cleric may cast Commune to contact their own deity or their servitor agents of their own deity. that is not. that is the end story. There is no other interpretation and no way for a Cleric of Shaundakul to Commune with anyone but Shaundakul or his servitors (allied gods are not agents and servitors, they are entities unto themselves.)

Kinda have to note:

It's straight forward

'You contact your deity, or agents thereof'.

BAM!

Note the keyword: Your (typically referring to the character's) deity.

Aha. So it's a greyhawk Phenomena! Now i understand what that little extra was for.
But you have to see if from my perspective, You're basically telling me how a lighter works when i have never ever in my entire life seen one. Of course it gets a little complicated. (Aka - Not familiar with greyhawk at all and that their clerics can worship a Ideal or Philosophy which is quite interesting but an entirely different discussion).

Then i have had my questions answered, Thank you very much. :)

Good rule of thumb for you, Svensk: don't ever quote "the book" to a DM. We're liable to drive you from the gaming table like Christ drove the money-changers from the temple. This is our make-believe world, which we pretended to have died for to absolve you players of your wannabe sins, and with no particular god or goddess as my witness (in spite of what the book says), I swear that I'm entitled to bear this metaphorical cross.

And what else is there to do, but to stare down at you with a sorrowful heart and bemoan, "Forgive them, m'lord, they don't know what the fuck they're doing"?

Question on raise dead. Did a quick search, and didn't find this asked before:

What are the limitations on raising someone? Let me define that (under the assumption you have to actually be viewing the body directly):

Is there a certain distance you have to be within to raise someone?
Could you kill someone, throw them off a cliff into water, and then raise them after they hit?
Can you raise them as they are falling down into the water?
What about as a use of torture? Can you literally kill someone and raise them as many times as you want? Assuming the person's soul actually chooses to come back when called, that is.

I've seen it said that using a raise dead scroll (or that specific spell) repairs some of the damage to the body; basically enough to keep them breathing and alive, from what I suspect/believe. So no worries on that front, I know that. I just was curious as to the questions I had just thought of.

Thanks!

1. Raise Dead has Touch range. You have to be in physical contact with the body.
2. No. See 1.
3. Not unless you're maintaining direct physical contact with them. In which case you'd be jumping with them. So no.
4. You can torture anything that's alive and can feel pain I imagine. But think about it. What stupid sap is going to keep coming back when his or her tormentor is the raiser? You have knowledge in Fugue of who is attempting to raise you. Though you forget what actually happens in Fugue, I'm pretty sure you can remember what sent you there while you are actually there. So yes, but it highly implausible unless you're dealing with someone suffering from the most severe cases of Stockholm Syndrome.

In addition, torture likely is more effective when the thing stays... you know... alive. Yeah, the deathblow to the head with a hammer hurts, and you can raise someone who's willing enough times to play whack-a-mole... but it's pretty much a waste(you're spending resources on scrolls after all). Any torturer worth his salt would actually a savant at keeping his victim alive. He's cruel enough to cut/pull/snap you where it hurts, but maliciously cautious enough to not do anything that would kill you(too quickly, at least).

Bah! I do not know how the heck I missed the touch attack part of the spell description! lol
Ironically, that link was the last one I read before posting. Go me!

On point four... I read most of that, just wasn't entirely sure of all the info that was passed. I know alignment and deity was passed, but if that was it then the person's soul wouldn't really know if the tormentor was raising them or not. That said, it might only work once anyways. If someone of a neutral alignment and deity was the killer, and then raised them, I'd think perhaps the soul wouldn't know. The next time, though, they might go 'Hey... somethin' fishy goin' on here, I say!' Haha

I guess the good question then is: Does someone's soul remember everything from before they died while on the Fugue?
(And no, no one should start making this a question on if you remember anything X minutes before death. This question centers solely on what your soul knows when it arrives on the Fugue.

on the note of clerics, what is amia's perspective on ur-preists?

as for raise, if someone refuses a raise they refused the raise, the alignment and deity stuff is not remembered after raise but it key to the process. and i'm gunna go out on a limb and say no to the soul thing because 'no one remembers anything ever, not even, after being dead.' ie your toon hits the floor, your toon wakes up, anything inbetween is irelevant.

Okay, again I stated specifically that I did not care about the 'you remember nothing from the Fugue' portion. I was solely asking about what your soul knows while it is on the Fugue. Yes, it can refuse the raise, but if it accepts the raise and then the person is killed again, does your soul remember the alignment/deity of the person that raised them the last time?

Perhaps it's a moot point, but something I'm pretty curious about.

I would assume it knows enough to make a sensible decision. If being raised by John Smith got you killed 30 second later, perhaps you will not let John Smith raise you again.
