ALTERNATIVE BEGINNINGS II: - The Seafarers
"Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off - then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can..."
As soon as the Pit Fiends plot reaches its conclusion, I will start on my second installment of my Alternative Beginnings Series: The Seafares. This post is to gauge interest and to give the participants good time to prepare their characters. I also recommend reading some nautically themed books or watching some appropriate films, so you know a bit of sailor lingo.
General Info: The Seafarers will be composed of a few sessions (3-4 sessions I think, I have realized I need to cut down from the Gladaitors one) that will launch your character into the life of adventuring from a background as a sailor signing on the munster roll of a Whaleship in Wharftown.
The events are open to max 5 characters of starting levels. I can not exceed this, because I want to focus on character development and my attention span is limited. If I receive more than 5 applications to join, I wil l decide who gets to join. And, I will not necessarily go by my usual "first come, first served" criteria here, for instance, I want to cater to Mains over Alts. So make sure to write good apps.
Warning: Because I want to experiment, this series will be extremely difficult and I will be extremely merciless in my DMing of the event; to the point it will include a slim risk of perma death - i.e. don't jump into the water with a full plate.
I do this because I want you to feel true gratification if you manage to survive it.
In return, you get a chance of finding unique loot and gain unique IC information and lore.
How to apply: Send me a brief PM with relevant info about your character. Note, your character doesn't have to be from Wharftown, he/she happens to be there at the start of the event. You need a plausible reason for being there, though, which shouldn't be hard to come up with for a sailor. Oh, and make sure to include: "Yes, I am a masochist, I agree to being subjected to cruel, unfair and wicked consequences for my character's IC actions."
I hope some of you might dig this.

Also: You won't be able to play your character between sessions, as you'll be at sea. (Duh!) And, you need to have the habit of checking the forums quite regularly.

Ooooooh, I keep experimenting with new character ideas. Ooooh, I could see trying this.
Ooooh, I bet timezone and limits would make it hard to get into. xD

What dieties of DnD/Amia are usually of sea-farers? I'm still learning ^-^;
Valkur, Umberlee, maybe Isthishia. And then that elven god of the sea, whatever.
The former two, Valkurians and Umberlants, are usually wanted on a vessel; the former to invoke good look from the god of naval fleets, and the latter to appease the Bitch Queen with supplications and sacrifices in case the ships run afoul of her tempestuous nature.

A part of me would have thought Shaundakul and Waukeen would be prayed to aswell considering boats are usually used for either travel or transporting trade which pushes commerce along.

Feeling a bit experimental, so I'll include some uneccesary but fun houserules for the event!
New Skills:
Skywatching:This skill allows you to predict the weather by looking at the sky. [NWN Skill used: Spot + Lore/2]
Sailing:This skill allows you to steer, operate and maneuver vessels on water, such as boats, ships or rafts. This skill details how to safely bring a ship to harbor in stormy weather, not to find the port in the first place; that's "navigation". [NWN Skill used: Lore + Concentration/2]
Navigation:This skill allows you to know how to guide a ship using a map, sextant, and compass. You know how to read the stars and currents to guide you. This skill is about finding out where to sail, not about steering the boat through sharp reefs; that's "sailing." [NWN skill used: Lore]
Rope Mastery:This skill allows you to operate ropes, in doing tasks such as tying and untying knots, keep bundles of rope neat and organized, and swing yourself from the main-mast like some crazy swashbuckler! [NWN skill used: Open Lock (+ Tumble/2 if the maneuver involves swinging yourself)]
Fishing:You know how, where, and when to fish. This skill also include maintaining the necessary equipment. [NWN skill used: Lore +(Discipline/2 if the fish is one size category larger than you.]
Operate Stationary Ranged Weapon:This skill allows you to aim, fire and maintain ballistas and cannons. Huzzah! [NWN skill used: Craft Trap + Concentration/2]

Actually, yeah, I remember reading that Waukeenar, Selunites, and Shaundakuligans are welcome on various vessels for their own obvious reasons. Actually, what I read, if I can even recollect it, went something like:
Naval vessels/fleets: Valkur
Merchant/trade vessels: Waukeen
Navigational/Pioneer vessels: Selune, Shaundakul
Elven vessels: The Sea God of the elven pantheon (whatever it is)
The Umberlant clerics are like the ones who hang around the docks and make themselves available, but you're always leery to take one...even though you know they can pacify the Bitch Queen if she gets pissed off. They're kind of the popular choice if you can't get anyone else, or if it is a bad squall season or something.
Meh. I'd like to but my playing hours are too far off everyone else's, I think.

Of course, if you just want to be there on the docks and bless their voyage as they they disembark (for a small fee ) from Wharftown; I have nothing against that.

Basically, this is what I do in my spare time in RL anyway. I'm a straight up Sailor. Yeah, I'll admit to it. And these are the kinds of boats I sail on... climbing up all the way to the royals, huffing up the sails, releasing the rigging to let em run free. Then, of course, you see who can spit the farthest from the top- Or who can spit on the first mate. Oh yeah-Safety equipment? Whats that?
I am SO interested in RPing this, and I believe I'll be able to help out with some things if needed. I know things, a'ight?
"Terry!!" *The booming voice of the first mate echoes over the deck as the hunched over Mate Gibbons crawls up to surface. His grey skin and scraggled hair all awashed o'er his face.*
"Terry, tha' Cap'n needs ye. Make it quick, lad.." *Gibbons turns to lash out orders to the others, but he hesitates to view the surprised Saul Terry once more.* "GO!"
*Saul Terry, a lean but hardy seaman. He was capable and young for his career. Handlin' seas came natural to him, so it did. He was once a scholar, studyin' proper common at a University on the mainlands. Losing all of his money gambling, 'e jumped on the only ship in port, the Vanessa. A merchant ship, she was, and a fine one too. A Flute ship. She was large, bore three masts, with a fore and a spanker not includin'. At first, the Cap'n made ta kill 'im, he did, but the boy begged him to let 'im stay. At first 'e struggled some time, but indeed he got better. Much, much better. He made his way as a Sailor, scrubbing the decks when the winds was down, eatin' scraps, sleepin' in the quarters an' hammocks, chippin' the riggin' o' rust. Nay, the life of a Sailor ain' easy, but he made his way along. He eventually came ta be a favorite 'mongst tha crew as well, he did...*
*The Vanessa has set sail away from Wharftown, leaving young Saul Terry behind. With his small bits of papers and belongings in his bag next to a chair, a bright cutlass dangling at his hip, and a grin on his face, Saul sits in patience only a Sailor can acquire in the local Inn, keeping a constant presence in the area, awaiting the arrival of a new ship.*
//This is mind, this new ship could be either, A.) If my app gets accepted, here goes! Should be fun!, B.) If it doesnt, he gets on a different ship.
