I know I can't be the only person around who loves golems.
Who else here has a character who is involved in the research or creation of golems?
The monolith has a new golem research lab so anyone interested to form a social club of sorts to run golem related plots?
And no, we're not talking about poop or boob golems

I love machines, robots, and mechs. Golems just barely fit into my love of these things due to the nature of thier construction.

When you say research, are you referring to giving golems computer programs to obey?
Are these difficult creations going to be used for entertainment?
---
Meh, I wouldn't support that, because that is what they -aren't-. They are difficultly created with hours of work into one, yet they are RPed as -toys-....
Next thing you know, they'll have phasers from the year 2568 (except people will make it look legit by saying it is magically operated, but on the other hand, guns weren't really invented), because they seem to already talk is if high tech computer systems.
Depends on what you are for, man. I usually stay away from golem topics because people wanna merge amia with a different time zone that really has no correlation with the game (of course unless a dm says that space aliens land on the planet, hehehe).

She's a mad cyborg creator!
...as for Golems, I don't mind them. My character's practically reliant on the golem parts Airais drilled into him to live. Such a hypocrit lol.

Is someone reading my mind? ...I've been trying to plan ways for one of my mages to build a Ruby Golem, and my first thought, when i sort it was to ask the Monolith for help.
It's going to be a reskin for my EMD, if it gets approved.

There's a considerable difference between 'robots' and 'golems', however they are bound in one similarity which many people see as making them identical.
That similarity, is that they are created with the sole purpose of accepting instructions. They are, at the end of the day, a device - whether magical or electronic, they're also artificial, and by sheer nature have no true device for 'free thought'.
All they have is what they're told to do and not do, and at the end of the day - they are a collection of instructions. This basic little point is what often makes people associate golems to computers.
Example;
Mage - "Iron Golem; if anyone enters this room, eliminate them"
Iron Golem - *if someone enters the room - eliminates them*
Programmer - "Computer; if anyone enters this room, eliminate them"
Computer Defense - *if someone enters the room - eliminates them*
A golem is, even by description, a creature made to follow instructions. It's absolutely 'rational' that a golem may even sound and act alot like a computer when you keep this in mind. It doesn't have 'free rational thought', 'free will', 'perspective'. All it has is what it's told to do.
A list of instructions, if you will. The only real difference here is that a 'Machine' requires these instructions to be written (programmed), where a Golem requires these instructions to merely be inferred by the creator
The result's pretty much the same.
To shorten the tangent. Yes. 'Machines' and Golems are extremely similar, and should they have vocal capabilities, it's extremely normal for them to sound and act similarly. Afterall, all they are is a collection of instructions applied to a physical object.
The major distinction is the 'How'.
A programmer will go to strenuous effort and possess -extensive- knowledge of every little Bit and Byte, and additionally has a thorough understanding of the hows and why's. And, the machine, is limited by this.
A Mage merely uses magic and, by creation, has little to worry about unless he misconveys his instructions (an error easily fixed). He need not understand the whys, the hows, or the details - because the object, by virtue of being magical, can ignore these boundaries.

I had a char wth the Juggenaut summon, i RP'ed it being his guardian, and only ever summoning it when he really needed it IC'ly.
And if people -want- to RP their Golem, or a Golem as a toy, or use it for entertainment, why shouldn't they? It's not like it affects RL in anyway, other than the fact you obviously dislike that people do this.

I like golems. If yo need a mindless task done, they are perfect. So long as you can convey all the instructions in one line (with additional 'ifs' if you feel it necessary), they can do it very well.
However, if you're looking for a goon, the mindless henchman is far smarter.

Yes they can, but at least you can give complex instructions ~without~ filling in all the superfluous fluff that a human would be able to figure out by default.

Lomir loves golems. Mostly as a hobby though, but he's got a keen interest in them. I like the idea of golems too, they're pretty nifty in a fantasy setting, especially a high magic one. Vesad is... Well, technically, he's a golem himself, albeit not a normal one. So he has a mild interest in golems, on a personal level. He's terrified of flesh golems though. So all in all, sounds awesome!

If I remember correctly, Van, there -is- a a set of armor in D&D called "golem armor" or something. It's pretty much a movable golem suit, and if I remember correctly, it increases size catagory and str.
That's pretty much a mech by my standards. Go, Gundamu! Zig Zeon!
Edit:
Oo, Oo! Found it. And it pretty much describes a mobile suit, IMO. God, I'm such a Gundam fanatic. *cries while clutching Amuro plushie....not really*

They don't come out often except during plot events, but they're we'll played.

Oh, that reminds me: one of the kids I mind is into DnD and has the manuals. I read about a funky looking thing, whose name escapes me, but it's a golem made out of the junk from a mage's lab: scrolls and broken wands and flasks and such.
I thought it'd make a nice replacement for the Effigy, which as I read in the same book, is meant to be an undead. It looks exactly like a mummy, so I'd use that model and give it a bio that explained in clear detail that it's plainly a construct.

Gah! Foiled. Well, kinda. Making the Effigy a construct when it's really an undead is a bigger jump than quietly omitting the part about lichs meddling with something that really is a construct, I suppose.
Your call, folks, I'll just rustle it up or leave it alone. I'd rather rustle it up since the Effigy is the wrong kind of crap for my tastes.

Quote: The creator of a grisgol must also capture a lich's phylactery and use it in the grisgol's construction. The creator first must facilitate the destruction of the lich whose phylactery he or she wants to use. After the lich's body is destroyed, the creator of the grisgol must finalize construction before the lich returns (usually in 1d10 days). If the lich returns before the grisgol is completed, the lich must be destroyed again. Animating the grisgol while the lich is still in limbo binds the essence of the lich to the grisgol.
No no, it isn't one itself.. it just has a lich in it. sorta.
It'd be fine, mechanically, but Kelemvorites might have issue with it..is what I was getting at.
