Melee Magthere Rules – All warriors will:

1. Bow to all Yath and inquire if they are in need of your services.
2. Salute those of higher rank.
3. Follow Orders of your superior to the letter.
4. Patrol the settlement and caves to the East and West.
Check points are –
- Sorcere Library, see that the librarian is well.
- Quellar Tinneari Gate, do not enter the compound unless invited by Tinnerai.
- Each merchant in Edonil proper
- Check in with each stationary guard and inquire whom they have seen recently.
- See that the main gates to Edonil are closed.
- Quellar Ussen d’Vhid Gate, do not enter the compound unless invited by Ussen d’Vhid.
- The Valsharesses Temple door, see that it is closed – Do Not Enter the Temple.
- The fishing spot near the Valsharesses Temple

I reward those whom perform successfully, with valuable items.

However, the warriors reflect directly on the Ul’Saruk. Should you fail in any shape or form you will reap punishment.

- General Orders -

These should be known by all warriors.

1. Thiryth!- Attack! ~ When called out you rush to do battle with your foes. In combat, however, pay attention to your Ul’Saruk and other high ranking members for further commands.

2. Mri'kul- “Lock” ~ A defensive formation formed around the higest ranking member present. All wounded drow should be healed with this command. It is called when the group is scattered or when the Yath needs immediate protection.

3. Wund l'cress- “Into the web” ~ This command calls for the group of warriors to head into battle and trap their enemies within their formation. A successful Wund l’cress would consist of the opponent trapped on all sides by drow.

4. Ulu l'Veldran- “Into the shadows” ~ This command calls for the drow to cast darkness and disperse immediately when called, fleeing in all directions and hiding. From here, they are to escape to a predetermined location. When the Ulu l’vedlrin is called, the sudden disappearance of the drow in all directions can cause enemies to be confused and this limits their target capacity.

5. Rei rath- “Fall Back” ~ This is a full retreat. Your means of escape back to the Melee Magthere is your own doing or you Mri’kul around the person summoning the gate and proceed through, based on rank.

Overview
The Melee-Magthere is the school of war. Is one of the three grand academies in a drow city. It trains drow in the arts of combat and battle tactics.

Rankings
The Melee-Magthere is a militaristic organization, and as such has a very strict hierarchy. Everyone is expected to salute the higher-ranking members.

The Ul'saruk
The Ul'saruk, or Warlord, is the highest ranking warrior of a drow city. They are in charge of making decisions concerning raids, the city's defense, and the training of warriors. Often the Ul'saruk is chosen from among the strongest of warriors, but with the responsibility and status that comes with the position, a shrewd mind, proper manners and a charismatic presence are great assets.

Sut'rinos
Sut'rinos means commander. They are the best of the best, the most trusted subordinates of the Ul'saruk. Upon achieving the rank of sut'rinos, the drow is expected to hold classes, plan and execute raids, and work as the Ul'saruk's eyes and ears. They have the authority to promote sargtlinen to the rank of drada, without specifically consulting the Ul'saruk beforehand. They can also recommend possible sut'rinos candidates to the Ul'saruk.

You can become a sut'rinos only by the permission of the Ul'saruk. Levels of power do not matter, if he doesn't approve. The general guideline is, that two sut'rinen per house, at maximum, will be accepted.

Drada
The dradan are the lower officers of the academy. Something equivalent of a lieutenant. Dradan may lead minor raids, take personal apprentices and aid in teaching the sargtlinen. They answer to the sut'rinen and the Ul'saruk, and will face the consequences of their failures. They can command sargtlinen, as long as they're not contradicting orders from higher up. Dradan are often expected to lead patrols into the tunnels around the city.

Ust Sargtlin
Ust sargtlin are the warriors who have proven themselves worthy of promotion but not ready to be an officer. There duties are to be the eyes and ears to the draden to help with training of the new recruits they may lead patrols but not raids. They must continue to train and attend classes and patrol the tunnels around the city.

Sargtlin
Sargtlinen are the lowest of warriors in the academy. They're the ones studying their first years in the academy, the footsoldiers with little value other than their combat-prowess and obedience. Unlike officers, a sargtlin is just expected to follow orders. If they are told to take part in a plan bound to fail, they do it. The higher-ups, who have planned the operation, will face the consequences. The sargtlinen are judged by their obedience. Sargtlinen frequently patrol the tunnels around the city, keeping an eye out for possible threats. They attend classes, and train in the use of many basic weapons. Most end up specializing in one, towards the end of their sargtlinhood.

Upon the single notice board within the Melee Magthere the original notices regarding the list of jaluk is returned to order, with a slight addition.

A new notice in neat and precise writing is added:

Warriors of Edonil, when you are on duty you are to wear the Melee Magthere Piwafi. This will be instantly recognizable so the the Yath and citizenry will see your commitment to their safety and service. Should you be in need of tailoring your current cloak or need a new one see me.

Sargtlin, you are a clean slate, black for the shadows from which you will emerge.

Ust Sargtlin, you are tested and have stepped up to be recognized, striving for the next rank of Draada as so shown by the dust of the color of that goal upon your Piwafi.

Draada, you are the new masters of war. The blood in your veins purple and hot to teach those Sargtlin about duty and how they become the weapon you already are.

Sutrinos, you are red with fire and rage, having a control that only comes with experience and dedication. You understand that war is an art and it is to you that your brother and sister warriors look to for that knowledge.

The Ul'Saruk is the pinnacle of the art of war. Red with fire and spilled blood and white for the webs of the Valsharess. Pridefully understanding this art, coveting the power that only comes with victory, lusting for the blood of the enemies of those she has sworn to protect, envious of the one whom reached the pinnacle before, greedy for better gear for her and her warriors, able to carry out vengeance on the Valsharesses enemies, ruthless in weeding out the weak for only the strong are worthy of the Valsharesses blessings.

Lolth tlu Malla,
Ul'Saruk Aly'isgar Tinnerai

//I didn't want to change the design of any ones armor, since we drowsie players design cool armor so I'm thinking a cloak is the way to go. Easy to craft and I'll help anyone who needs a second cloak so all you have to do is swap instead of re-craft. :)

Cloak Style - 70
Cloth 1 - (see Rank below)
Cloth 2 - 63
Leather 1 - 60
Leather 2 - 164
Metal 1 (see Rank below)
Metal 2 - 91

Rank Colors
Sutrinos: Cloth 1 - 91 / Metal 1 - 91
Draada: Cloth 1 - 147 / Metal 1 - 57
Ust Sargtlin: Cloth 1 - 147 / Metal 1 - 171
Sargtlin: Cloth 1 - 45 / Metal 1 - 171

Patrol Formation – Scouts out front then coming back to report to highest ranking participant.

Attack Formation – Melee warriors engage enemies to keep them in place, Ranged warriors and mages at a distance, Scouts flanking to assist teams whom are in need and to pick off any that attack the ranged warriors and mages

=======

Warriors –

We will meet just inside the entrance to Khi’Sull, the drider holes. (map below) I expect you to be prepared when you arrive. My orders are thus:

- Scouts will move ahead of the main party and report back immediately if anything other than driders are seen.
- I will assign warriors whose main task will be to keep the Yath safe, remember however it is all our duty, with your life if necessary.
- We will not be running like rivvil but move like shadows so that we are not taken by surprise.
- You are to attack as soon as you see an enemy and disengage should you become gravely wounded in order to heal so that you may rejoin the battle.
- After each engagement we form up again so that we are never scattered.
- If you hear the command Ulu l’veldrin, you will immediately cast darkness and return to a predetermined rally point.

I will pass this knowledge onto any of our cavern neighbors whom decide to join us, for the rebels are a threat to us all.

Lolth tlu Malla,
Ul’Saruk Streeaka'ael Jess d'l'Orbb

A neatly drawn map is attached with clear notations of where to meet:

Drow Rebel Cavern Location:
We will meet just inside the entrance to Khi’Sull, the drider holes.
Begin at L’Obsul, Harlil – the Tradehouse L’da’uren (main port in spot for UD races).
- Proceed out of the building going right past the slaves to the Crane Operator by the Book Merchant. Take the crane to L’Obsul Top
- At L’Obsul Top, proceed left past the cave entrance to the Chain Crane Operator by the duergar labourer to L’Obsul Halfway
- At L’Obsul Halfway proceed right to the stone carved cave entrance to Hiran K’lar
- At Hiran K’larl, double back returning through the cave entrance to Hostile drow areas - Khi'Sull

Due to recent attacks on guards placed outside the temple warriors of the magthere should add that area to their patrols. It is not our duty to tend to the security inside the temple but be sure there is no suspicious activities outside it's door.

Cali looks over his new office, the pin denoting rank of Ul'Saruk only barely having been affixed to his cloak.

"This should be fun."

With a short lived grin he walks to the training room to look for signs of life. None seen, he makes his way out into the city to begin whipping the town guard into shape. On his way out, he posts a note inside the door.

"All active members of the Magthere are ordered to either report to or leave word for Ul'Saruk Cali Lethala. Include name, rank, position in battle formation and patrol schedule."

Below is signed Ul'Saruk Cali Lethala.

//Shoot me PMs to schedule IC meeting. Let's get this thing rolling!

She strode into the Melee Magthere looking for the Ul’Saruk. She flipped back her hood and her wild hair now full of static electricity danced chaotically, even as she stood and read the notice. Her crimson eyes narrowed and her jaw tightened. Taking the quill from the Ul’Saruks desk she scrawled quickly, tossed the quill back onto the desk, pivoted and strode out.

“Blood Storm draws near.”

The defiled note has been discarded and another one, identical to the original, has replaced it.

A second note below it reads, "If "Blood Storm" would be so kind as to leave their rank, position on the field of battle and standard times of patrol, both the Magthere and the city as a whole would be most grateful."

Both bear the signature of Cali.

Seeing the note left by Cali Malag'Yaz furrows his eyebrows and stares at the note in thought. "This should prove interesting, at the very least."

He then writes a note for the Ul'saurk which reads:

Name: Sut'rinos Malag'Yaz d'Qos'Yutsu. Position in battle formation: Varying. Patrol schedule: Undefined.

Signed,

Sut'rinos Malag'Yaz d'Qos'Yutsu

For the last several days Cali would be found in the training room guiding the sentries in melee combat with the use of their armor, shields, helmets and training longswords.

The notes left to him have been filed neatly on his desk, and he has begun to fill out a roster with both current and possible members in the magthere. It's tucked away in a drawer.

"And how did he die?"

Cali paced in front of the line of guards in training, holding his chin in one hand and idly thumping his staff on the floor with his other. The team of five he had sent out into the caverns to train had returned to the magthere, a dead man suspended between two of them.

"We came upon ogres... or rather the ogres came upon us. He-"

Another cut in. "He killed one before he fell!"

The group fell silent and watched Cali as he paced. "Where is his shield? His weapon?"

The men looked nervously among their number until one spoke. "We must have lost them in the trip back, Ul'Saruk."

Cali strode over and lifted the dead man's sword hand to examine the palm. "Why are their wounds on his palm? How does one sustain this while holding a sword?"

He was answered with only silence.

"Tell me!" He slammed the butt of his staff onto the floor and turned to face them, his eyes digging for the truth in their faces. He looked to the one who spoke first, Xalthis, "I put you in charge. Tell me what happened."

"His lost his weapon when he tried to flee," the patrol leader said.

"Was the order given?"

"No, Ul'Saruk"

He paced in though a moment more, watching the floor. "He will be raised. I am feeling generous." He stood over the corpse and held his staff high, offering a prayer to Selvetarm to call back his soul and cast his spell. The guard's eyes shot open, and an unfinished death scream found voice in his throat and echoed in the chamber silently while the men watched.

"You have felt mercy. You may not feel it again. You are no longer a guard for the timing being. Return to me with the heads of five ogres and we will speak further on this matter. Be gone."

With that he turned and quickened his pace back to the door leading to his office, saying over his shoulder, "Assemble in the training room. Today we are going to learn how to use a shield. Properly."

The activities of the day had hardly yet begun.

*posted on the Magthere notice board*

On the cycle after next is to be held a general meeting of the Magthere. All available members are ordered to attend.

Ul'Saruk Cali Lethala

*below are listed details*

//What time is good for both the US and EU time zones? Send PMs on availability if this does not work. A transcript will be made and posted if you miss. Tentatively set at 7PM EDT...Eastern DAYLIGHT time (11PM GMT).

This will also be the last post (by me, at least) in this thread. As of that meeting a new "Melee Magthere" thread will be created and further IC posts will go there. Don't mind the "ordered" thing. You know the deal! Make if you can!

Must you always make new thread? Ask a DM to clean it.

I think it's cause of the first poster. Easier to edit and uphold the rooster if the ul'saruk has that.

Unless I'm incorrect, DMs can remove all posts except for his. He can then edit his into one hell of an introduction.
It just seemed the most sane thing to do.

*cough* I gave mine and standard! Figure it out! :D

I was under the impression that new threads were made. This is what I'm going to seek, as it's much easier. Anyone wishing to old info can merely look up the old thread. It will be linked in mine. Anything else?

This will be today! 3.5 hours from now.

Meeting will take place exactly 49 hours from now. If people show at this one, then I'll do two. That's two days and... one hour! 7PM saturday night Eastern Time.

Cheers!

Ilharess Nizzre’tyne in one of her visits to take the guards in training out for training sees the note left and smiles.

Tsabkel, I have been training the guards of Edonil awaiting the delivery of one capable of passing the tests for Ul’Saruk. Find me at House Tinnerai so that you may be tested for entry into the Melee Magthere by the Matron Mothers currently ruling Edonil.

It will be a pleasure to see what you have mastered thus far with the Orb Alur style. I will be especially interested in your tumbling abilities.

Lolth tlu Malla,
Yathrin Ilharess Nizzre’tyne

A copy of this reply also finds its way to Ussen d'Vhid for delivery to Ust'Ilharess Velthura.

*he picks the note up slowly whilst chewing on an apple, hopefully not a poisoned one and he starts to write again*As any of Lloths faithful children would be, I am honoured to have such a prime example of Drow Brilliance non other than Yathrin Ilharess Nizzre'tyne answer my request to join this most prestigious academy.Hopefully one day I can put my skills as Drill master to its fullest with the superior Guidance that is Drow war fare and training. So that I can live and serve Lloth and all that are her Clergy until my death is seen as useful....for that is all a Drow male should strive to be...is simply useful.

*after hearing of the Ul'Saruk's resignation, Elk'Dorl wanders in to the Melee Magthere and makes his way to the office of the Ul'Saruk he enters the room and peers around for a brief moment and then makes his way to the desk and sits in the large throne like chair and begins scribbling on some paper. Shortly after a demon appeared from the shadows and Elk'dorl rolled up the the parchments and handed them to the demon.*

Send these to the esteemed houses and inform them that Elk'dorl is now the acting Ul'Saruk and he wishes a roster of all those still currently a part of the Melee Magthere. Oh and inform them that if any wish to dispute my self proclaimed position they can come see me in person

*with that the demon simply smirked and nodded his head before slipping back in to the shadows*

The demon returns from House Tinnerai with a short reply, just one name:

Draada'Quarthin Xa’Cheena d’Edonil

Other items he will find on the Ul'Saruks desk are reports of training missions that have taken place when Yathrin Ilharess Nizzre'tyne takes those guards not on duty out for patrols of the surrounding caverns.

The heavy metal door of the Melee Magthere academy stood wide open since last cycle. The cold air of the cavern drafted inside the building and swirled around the entry. The soft breeze was consumed by the braziers that once again lit the foyer of the melee school. Under the dim light four new dummies faced any who entered until they too would be replaced. All notices were removed from the notice board which now was underdivided by head tags: Ranks, Enlistment, Message en Special Notices.

"Uxultius! Look at this!" The short man looked over his shoulders. A snarl drew the corners of his mouth twistedly. "Bloody slave", he muttered while his eyes glanced down at the empty corridor through the door of the untidy office of the Ul'saruk in the Melee Magthere. By the looks of the man he couldn't be much of a warrior himself for he had neither the age nor the stature for physical duty. He was rearranging the entire office from mail to furniture.

Any visitor who'd ask him for his master would get the same infuriated reply: "Master?...Master? Dare not to suggest I'm a filthy slave! I'm a commoner of Edonil!" A cooled down Thrialdor would eventually say something useful in reply: "Work?...Are you saying I don't work? Oh. Employed you mean? I'm employed by Lo'milmar Ussen'd'vhid."

Thrialdor took his time to copy the text the new Ul'saruk had passed him. He sat on the seat left of the Ul'saruk's one. While he copied the mission statement Lo'milmar had given him, he succeeded in interlocking a sigh and a frown into something beyond decency. "Why must I copy this? Such a waste of my time! The Ul'saruk's handwriting is not that bad. I should be asking a raise!" When he posted the copy of the original mission statement to the Special Notices board, he had to remark nonetheless that his handwriting was better than the original after all.

Quote:
The Melee Magthere of Edonil: Mission Statement

The melee academy of Edonil is an institution that accomplishes it’s mission primarily by maintaining the defences of the city of Edonil. It’s authority stretches out throughout the cavern in which the city is built, the outlying caverns Mu'll Har'ol and Loniar Har'ol where the House of Tinnerai and the House of Ussen’d’Vhid are prospectively found. Furthermore the academy is instructed to keep the passage to the city of l’Obsul practicable. To complete it’s mission the melee academy is in charge of the formation of soldiers and officers. The development of the cadets is accomplished physically, mentally, military, spiritually and socially.

To see to the needs of the Yath of Edonil and to cary out the tasks of the Temple, as well as maintaining the defences and order within the Temple, the Melee Magthere is responsible for the formation and training of the Temple Guard. The internal structure of the Temple Guard is approved by the Temple. These tasks can be executed by no one other than the Temple Guard itself.

The noble houses of Edonil must produce a number of soldiers in proportion to the volume of their houses. All commoner houses are obliged to register any male of age who is not a part of any other academy, nor excused of his duties. Furthermore, within the melee academy there’s made no distinction of lineage. Respect is earned through service and promotion. The melee academy has a voice at city meetings and preserves the right to call city meetings. The melee academy is discouraged from taking any perspective other than in the city’s interests.

The academy must fulfill it’s role within the society. Therefore it’s bound to the rule of the Temple of Lolth. Consequently it must abide the decisions of the matron council and work along with the other academies established in the city of Edonil. Although it executes it’s proper missions apart of the other academies, the melee academy must not interfere with any other academy. It must respect the wizards academy and aid it where is possible.

The academy values four principles: Honour, self-discipline, courage and respect.

Any member of the melee academy must strive for upholding and developing the honour of the academy, in failing this objective, the subject plasters the house they belong to. Any member upholding the authority placed upon him by the council of matrons must show self-discipline at all times. Cowardice and disrespect are considered failure to the archpriestress and will be with consequence.

The internal structure of the melee academy is set by ranks. The prospective ranks are in descending order: Ul’saruk, sut’rinos and Olath'sut'rinos, draada’quarthin and Olath'draada'quarthin, sargtlin and olath'sargtlin. The leader of the academy is the Ul’saruk. He is the highest ranked soldier within the academy and represents the academy in higher circles. He may govern the academy as he sees fit, though, subséquently is held responsible for the actions of the melee academy. He has to answer to the matrons of Edonil and the archpriestress of Lolth. Promotion and admission are at his judgment.

Ul'saruk Lo'milmar Cil'in

The short man left the Melee Magthere shortly after he posted the note. He knew he had a lot of work ahead.

Carefully he dipped the pen into a small vial of inkt. He took his time to draw the diagram of the new ranking system. It had taken him a while to come up with such a plain structure. "Once again an example of why I'm the best scribe of Edonil. Such a complex idea poured into a simple design. Geniality! Imagine what this academy would be without me."

The Ranking Structure of the Melee Magthere

Quote:

Olath'Sut'rinos
This temple guard is commander at heart who has proven himself worthy to carry out tasks for the Temple and the Yath personally. He's in charge of the defence of the Temple and it's near proximity. He leads the temple guards who are assigned to the protection of the Yath. The Olath'sutrinos is the connection between the Temple and the Melee Academy. Besides his divine duties, he's in charge of the training of the temple guard.

You can become a sut'rinos only by the permission of the Ul'saruk. Levels of power do not matter, if he doesn't approve. The general guideline is, that two sut'rinen per house, at maximum, will be accepted.

Draada"quarthin and Olath'draada'quartin.

The Olath''dradan are officers of the Melee Academy who've also proven themselves before the Temple. Besides their duties as lieutenant they've been assigned special tasks by the Temple.

Ust'Sargtlin
Ust sargtlin are the warriors who have proven themselves worthy of promotion but not ready to be an officer. There duties are to be the eyes and ears to the draden to help with training of the new recruits they may lead patrols but not raids. They must continue to train and attend classes and patrol the tunnels around the city.

Sargtlin and Olath'sargtlin
Sargtlinen who demonstrate divine abilities may be chosen so serve the Temple. They'll be personally trained by the Olath'sut'rinos and his dradan.

The rank descriptions are taken from Beciv's OP for which my thanks.

When he came to his last task of the cycle, the depressed man oddly enough lightened up a little. With a rapid, yet, solid hand, he registered the new enrollment. "Why is my name not on that list? How could he forget my roll?", Thrialdor flushed with embarrassment. He finished the note without his custom creativity. He posted the paper on the Rank board and flashed a furrowed stare at it. After making sure he was alone in the entry, he pulled out his pen again.

Ul'saruk
Lo'milmar Cil'in

(Olath')Sut'rinos
Elk'dorl Tinnerai-Sut'rinos and Olath'draada'quarthin

(Olath')Draada'quarthin
Xa'chena Tinnerai-Draada'quarthin

(Olath')Sargtlin

Scribbled underneath the original ranks another line was added.

Official Headmaster of Administrative Affairs, Registry and Secretary
Thrialdor Tel'in

*Elk'dorl walks past and sees the posting and shakes his head, the pulls out a quill and ink and scratches off his rank and rewrites beside it in big letters "Olath'Sultrinos" then smirks*
Much better
*He grins one more time then wanders off*
